Shorecrest bowling team competed at State Tournament in Tacoma

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

Shorecrest bowling team with
coach Veronica Cook (left front)
A team from Shorecrest competed at the 54th Annual State High School Varsity Bowling Championships February 16-17, 2019 in Tacoma.

More than 1,000 student athletes statewide participated during the bowling season. Now in its 54th year, this is the 2nd longest running High School Bowling Championship in America, following only New York.

Coach Veronica Cook said,
I am so proud of our team for qualifying for and competing at the State Tournament. Many of our bowlers have never bowled competitively before joining our high school team. This is the case for both Shorewood and Shorecrest.
I am very proud of how Shorewood coach Tammy Ceesay and I have been able to encourage students to bowl that may never have thought of doing it competitively before. (See Shorewood bowling article HERE)
The success of our two schools shows that this is a sport than anyone can be involved in. We hope that our success will continue and that we can introduce more students to the sport.

All kids are welcome on the teams, and no experience is necessary.

Bowling is classified as a club, rather than a sport, so there is no financial support. Community members can help support the kids by donating to the program.

Cook said they could use bowling balls 12lbs or lower, bowling shoes in multiple sizes, and wrist supports. Contact her if you have items to contribute: Veronica.cook@shorelineschools.org

February 16-17, 2019 the Shorewood Varsity Bowling teams took part in the 54th Annual WSBPA State Championship at Paradise Lanes in Tacoma. Due to the heavy snow, for the first time in tournament history, there were two events - one in Spokane, and one in Tacoma.

Both head coach Tammy Ceesay and Assistant Coach Ed Wada were excited to be one of the only schools to have two teams in the tournament.

Shorewood 1: Malcolm Jacobson (Captain - 12), Brandon Hozjan (11), Mataio Shulda-Maui (11), Alexa Cominos (11), Caroline Gugger (11) and Sean McCandless (10), took 5th place in Division 1 with 29/50 wins, high game 206.

Shorewood 2: Ray Davis (Captain), Henry Carson Jordan King, Brandon Main (12), and Francisco Barocio (11), took 4th place in Division 2 with 16/40 wins, high game 205 (highest in D2).

The team would like to thank Harley O'Neil and the staff at Spin Alley for their support.

“The safety of the students and their parents was our first priority,” declared WSBPA President Robert Hanson, owner of Tower Lanes and Paradise Entertainment Center in Tacoma.
“The closures of the mountain passes and the likely of additional snowfall were contributing factors,” added Hanson, who assisted on several conference calls to coaches, parents and bowling center owners over the past two days.

Shorewood bowling teams qualify for State but can't afford to get there

Thursday, January 25, 2018

Shorewood bowling teams qualify for State Championship
but can't afford the trip.

Three of Shorewood's bowling teams have qualified for the WIAA state championships, to be held February 1-3, 2018 at Narrows Plaza Bowl in University Place, west of Tacoma.

Unfortunately it is a very costly trip and many of the bowlers are unable to afford the expenses. The kids are doing some fundraising to pay for the team fees.

Parent Michelle Van Patten is hoping to raise the funds for the accommodations, transportation, and meals.

In the past, the amazing coach has paid for fees out of pocket and I don't believe she should have to do that.
Please help us come together as a community to help them compete at State.

Michelle has set up a fundraising page at YouCaring and has raised a third of her goal of $1500.

Shorecrest Bowling Team surprises everyone by becoming State Champions

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Photo courtesy Washington State Bowling Proprietors' Association
Taken by Mike Penney.

The Shorecrest Bowling Team surprised everyone this weekend by going from a team that did not actually qualify for the WSBPA state tournament to State Champions.

Shorecrest was invited to attend the state tournament after the Third Place team in their league was unable to attend. After the first day of bowling, Shorecrest went from the 8th and final position to 6th.

The two-day event was held at Narrows Plaza Bowl in University Place, WA.

During the final day of the tournament, the Shorecrest team embraced the Baker style of bowling and kept rising in the tournament. They focused on having a positive attitude and supporting each other instead of the details of how they were bowling. This worked for them and the pins fell their way. They successfully beat last year's State Champions in their final round to be named the 2014 WSBPA division 3 State Champions.

The team consists of Daniel Bachicha, Tony Greathouse, Collin Young, Collins Davis, Casey Bodmer, Antonio Bachicha and Coach Veronica Cook.

Collins Davis was named to the All-State Team 2 as was Spencer Jacobs of Shorewood.

Collin Young was named to the All-State Team 1 as team captain with a 201 average throughout the tournament and was named MVP for the Division 3 competition.

The Shorewood team, Coach Tammy Ceesay, was given the Don Peek Inspirational Team Award for Division 3.

The Shorecrest team would like to thank the Shorecrest Boosters for helping their students pay to participate in the league and helping them financially to go to State. They would also like to thank Spin Alley and Spiros for their financial support as well.

If you would like to help Shorecrest continue their bowling program consider making a donation to the Shorecrest Boosters Auction in the Bowling team's name. Donations are due by February 28th. More information here or contact Veronica Cook.

What goes on in the mind of a bowler bowling a perfect game? Steve DiBernardo is that bowler and he shares his game thinking

By Steve DiBernardo at Spin Alley in Shoreline

On the approach, we all have thoughts in the playground of our minds. During the 10th frame of a game two, it was my knees doing all the thinking and they began shaking.  All I had to do was roll one more ball, one more time, for a 12th strike.  300.  A perfect game.  A dream.

Some might say, it was the penny I found at the back of lane 10, before the game.  Heads up, 1964, a lucky find as lore describes.  It occurred to me that 1964 was the year I celebrated my 12th birthday.  Hmm... 12 strikes?

One of the many thoughts that were shaking in my knees as I stood at the approach on lane 10 to let that 12th shot roll away from my fingers.  I looked down at my knees and said out loud, "Stop it".  Then, I listened to the silence of an amazingly quiet bowling alley..  "What's the worst that can happen?  297, 298, 299?

In the end, I had to make the shot, let it go.  The pins fell, the score was perfection.
