The Echo Lake Neighborhood invites you to visit two of their Earth Day projects on Sunday April 28, 2023

Midvale Gardens in 2019. Photo by David Chen.
A lot of work had already been done before this photo.

Like many neighborhoods in Shoreline, the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) supports the work of local volunteers to maintain its green spaces.

This is particularly important in Echo Lake, which has only two tiny scraps of parks - although one does have a lake!

Two other spaces have been created by volunteers out of neglected, overgrown nuisance public properties and one of them - The Densmore Pathway - is now a magical walkway with plantings, a path, art works, a bench by the Little Free Library - and a public kiosk.

Midvale Gardens 2024. Photo by Val Wishaar Tracy.
It is now possible to see all the way to the back of the property.

The other space is what they call the Midvale Gardens. It is a piece of property adjacent to the Interurban Trail at N 192nd on the west side of Aurora.

Midvale Gardens is affiliated with Diggin' Shoreline as well as ELNA. Volunteer Derek Creisler has been working for years to clear the 6 foot high tangle of blackberries and other invasive plants that wrapped themselves around the big trees of this space.

Derek is now an expert on weeds and he would be happy to tell you about them on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 1:30pm."Workshop on Weeds - the Midvale Gardens project, its history, and where do we go from here"

Sara and Cristin have made excellent progress at Shoreline Park

Sara Cammeresi has been clearing weeds and invasive species from the trees in Shoreline Park, 19030 1st Ave NE, north of the tennis courts.

This is the second Earth Day event at Shoreline Park this weekend. In the first, on Friday, the focus was on the variety of plants.

The Sunday event, April 28, 2024 at 10am will be more about the battle with blackberries "Native and Invasive Plants at Shoreline Park"

Sara will lead a tour of the park, focusing on the successful efforts to reclaim space in this lovely little forest.

BioBlitz

After both events, there will be an opportunity to participate in the Earth Day BioBlitz. Volunteers will be onsite for two hours, with coffee.

Here is the link to the BioBlitz information: Information can be found at this link. Registration is appreciated but not required.

Two gems of the Echo Lake Neighborhood on display Saturday April 27, 2024: Densmore Pathway and Echo Lake

Wednesday, April 24, 2024

Entrance to the Densmore Pathway

You could potentially get to both events on Saturday April 27, 2024 as the Echo Lake Neighborhood celebrates Earth Day by showing the work that has been done for two of its green spaces.

Saturday, April 27, 10am, at Densmore Pathway (NE 188th between Ashworth and Densmore) Marla Tullio will lead a walking tour, discussing the "Birds and plants of Shoreline's Densmore Pathway".

The Pathway is a reclaimed space, formerly a neglected Right Of Way, which because of the work of many near neighbors, has been turned into a peaceful walk from Ashworth to Densmore.

A meandering gravel pathway lined with a variety of plants, art pieces peek through the grasses and hang overhead.

A bench, little free library, and kiosk mark the entrance on Ashworth, almost hidden behind the rain gardens which line the street. Meet there at 10an.

Parking is on-street and very limited; please be mindful of neighbors' driveways.

Saturday, April 27, 11am, at Echo Lake Park 19901 Ashworth Ave N, Ann Michel will discuss the “Flora, Fauna and Rainwater: The Future of Echo Lake”.

ELNA volunteers have been monitoring the health of the lake and working to keep the park groomed for 25 years. Ann and the Friends of Echo Lake are working intensively to keep the lake healthy and replace invasive plants with native species.

Meet by the lake while Ann shares her extensive knowledge of this small gem.

After either event, if you wish to participate in the BioBlitz after the presentation, full information is here. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Echo Lake Neighborhood celebrates Earth Day with five events over three days

Friday, April 12, 2024

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) is going all out for Earth Day.

They have cancelled their usual 3rd Tuesday Zoom meeting this month.

Instead, for this year’s Earth Day weekend, ELNA is hosting five interactive events, each consisting of a featured speaker followed by a "Bioblitz" gathering.

A Bioblitz? What’s that?

A bioblitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible. The first BioBlitz was held in Washington, D.C. in 1996. Approximately 1000 species were identified at this first event.

Download the iNaturalist app (not the Seek option; 'Connect with Nature' on iPhone) to your phone (you can do that now) and set up an account if you do not already have one. Our local events are part of the "City Nature Challenge 2024 - Seattle-Tacoma" project. (There are helpful hints on the Registration page)

When you are in one of the parks choose a plant and take a photo, following instructions on the app.

The schedule is as follows:

Friday, April 26, 11am, at Shoreline Park, 9030 1st Ave NE

Joy Wood of Green Shoreline Partnership,
"Forest Health and Ecological Restoration"

Saturday, April 27, 10am, at Densmore Pathway (188th between Ashworth and Densmore)

Marla Tullio,
"Birds and plants of Shoreline's Densmore Pathway"

Saturday, April 27, 11am, at Echo Lake Park 19901 Ashworth Ave N

Ann Michel,
“Flora, Fauna and Rainwater: the Future of Echo Lake”

Sunday, April 28, 10am, at Shoreline Park, 9030 1st Ave NE

Sara Cammeresi,
"Native and Invasive Plants at Shoreline Park"

Sunday, April 28, 1:30pm at Midvale Gardens (southeast of 192nd & Midvale)

Derek Creisler,
"Workshop on Weeds - the Midvale Gardens project, its history, and where do we go from here"

In addition:
  • Light refreshments will be available
  • Rain - cancels / does not cancel please check each event listing for details in the link below
  • Everyone is welcome
Benefits:
  • An after-covid in-person community gathering with no covid threat due to it being held outdoors
  • A reason to get outdoors, connect with nature, and connect with members of our local community
  • Learn about plants and animals in our local community
  • Work in pairs, in small groups, or individually to gather photos (a wonderful way for a family to spend time together)
  • Differently-abled (wheelchair, walkers, etc.) individuals can participate as the activity is not athletic. All locations are near paved city trails and have paved trails within the site (Densmore Pathway has a gravel path).
  • You will be helping to create records of the biodiversity in our area

Stewardship Foundation Community Parks Clean-Up
Saturday April 20, 2024 from 9:00am - 2:00pm

Last year, 18 wonderful people came out on a drizzly morning in honor of Earth Day, to pick up trash and remove invasive weeds in several parks around the Lake Forest Park Town Center.

Make a difference by participating in our parks cleanup this year!

We plan to meet at 9:00am at Whispering Willow Park 17038 44th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155.

Depending on the number of volunteers, we will fan out to other areas from there. Hope you will join us for this fulfilling experience of civic engagement as we work together to keep our environment beautiful and free from litter.

What We’ll Do:
  • Pick Up Trash: Armed with gloves, trash grabbers, and bags, we’ll scour parks and rights of way to collect litter. We will also work on areas with ivy or other invasives as time allows.
  • Sort Waste: We’ll separate trash, recyclables, and hazardous materials for proper disposal.
  • Connect with Others: Meet fellow environmentally conscious individuals and make new friends while making a positive impact.
LFP Councilmember Tracy Furutani with LFPSF Board member & StreamKeeper Brian Saunders

Why Participate?
  • Environmental Impact: Every piece of trash we pick up contributes to cleaner communities and a healthier planet.
  • Fun and Fulfilling: Volunteering is a rewarding experience. Plus, it’s a great way to spend time outdoors! Time in nature is good for your mental and physical health.
How to Get Involved:
  • Show Up: Bring your enthusiasm and let’s make a positive impact together! (dress for the weather, bring gloves if you have some you don't mind getting dirty)
  • Spread the Word: Share this opportunity with friends, family, and coworkers.
For more Info:
  • Contact organizer, Brian Saunders or the Stewardship Foundation at info@lfpsf.org
Together, we can work toward a waste-free world!

Celebrate Earth Day by picking up litter in the Hillwood Neighborhood

Thursday, March 30, 2023

It's time to sign up to clean up Hillwood Neighborhood in honor of Earth Day 2023!

Let's outdo that this year on APRIL 15, 2023 from 10am to 12 noon.

Singles, couples, friends and families are all encouraged to join in (parents will sign wavers for younger kids at check-in).

Sign up by contacting George, HNA treasurer, and tell him your zone choices:

Choose your zone
You may collect trash in your own home zone, or if your zone has been claimed already, please accept another zone (or two!) to work in.

There will be two sign-in and turn-in locations: Hillwood Park and the Shoreline Park and Ride (see map). There is ample parking at both locations.

Kits including safety vests, litter pickers, buckets and gloves will be provided. Snacks and water will be available, too.

Please note: Litter collecting on Aurora Ave N should not include child helpers. Also, Richmond Beach Rd and 205th will have more trash and traffic than other roads in Hillwood.

From the City of Shoreline

As we navigate these unprecedented and uncertain times in our lives and as a community, we invite you to stay engaged in sustainability efforts.
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, the City of Shoreline recently released its first Sustainability Report with information on how the City is addressing sustainability and how you can do your part!

The report provides an overview of the City’s 2019 achievements for five core focus areas, and associated indicators, as outlined in the City’s Sustainable Shoreline program. The focus areas include:
  • Climate, Water and Energy;
  • Materials, Food and Waste;
  • Transportation and Mobility;
  • Trees, Parks and Ecosystems; and
  • Resilient Communities.

The City has a long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability. Programs related to waste reduction, green building, pollution prevention, and natural habitat have helped establish Shoreline as a regional leader in sustainability and climate action.

You can view the report and learn more about actions you can take in support of a Sustainable Shoreline at shorelinewa.gov/sustainability.

King County goes digital for 50th anniversary of Earth Day

Tuesday, April 21, 2020

It’s the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22 – a time when King County celebrates the natural environment with residents and shares green lifestyle tips that can add up to make a big difference.

Earth Day in King County is traditionally celebrated with a wide range of active education and participation events, including volunteer habitat restoration work parties, educational fairs, and tours of waste management facilities – but this year is unlike any before.

That’s why the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks is honoring Earth Day digitally this year, providing green-themed activities and lifestyle tips that families can do while safe distancing at home.

Visit Earth Day website that offers tips for living a greener lifestyle, such as how to:
  • Make sure you are recycling right – empty, clean and dry
  • Identify noxious weeds in your neighborhood
  • Support hard-hit local farmers during the pandemic
  • Reduce food waste to save money and unused resources
  • Support the Wastewater Treatment Division by not flushing trouble

Environmental quizzes and activities every day on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram through Earth Day, where families can have fun and test their knowledge about our local environment, recycling, food waste, trees and more.

There's a list of actions that people can take at home to help save the planet.

For example, a lot of people are working in their yards this spring, so this is a great time to practice natural yard care, using fewer pesticides on your lawn and garden, and more native plants – they need less watering and care, and don’t require chemicals.

That will cut down on the amount of toxics in the soil and in the amount of pollutants that go into stormwater runoff.

Actions like these will help keep Puget Sound waters cleaner, and that’s good for the salmon and orcas, too.
