Roundabout on 145th west of I-5
Drone photography by David Carlos

Well, folks, here it is. The dreaded roundabout.

This one is at 145th on the west side of the freeway. It provides a southbound exit from I-5 and a southbound entrance to I-5.

Or you could just go in a circle and go back the way you came on 145th.

There are pedestrian crossing on the north and south sides, which lead to the sidewalks on the freeway overpass. Currently there do not seem to be any sidewalks leading west, but I expect that will come.

It looks like we will be waiting some time for the matching roundabout on the east side of I-5.

Awesome! A good solution for a high volume of traffic. Remember to slow down a bit, offer some kindness and everyone will get through quickly and efficiently.

Many area drivers are too timid to handle this.

Such a waste of money.

Is there a pinch point on the E side where it’s only one lane?

The key is, cars in the roundabout have the right of way. Cars entering must yield to those already in the roundabout. Super simple, works great.

It’s not dreaded if you know how to use them. Then again, I’ve been out here 10yrs and it seems like straight lanes are also hard to use for the average PNW driver

That's going to be a big improvement! I wasn't quite sure what they were building but roundabouts are very efficient and really reduce accidents. I think/hope it will also be much safer for pedestrians walking to/from the light rail station. A little adjustment to get used to it, but I think we'll see it's going to be much better.

I think that's a great improvement! And thank goodness it's almost done. Roundabouts are more efficient and much safer for cars and pedestrians. Great for all the walkers to the light rail station. It will be a little adjustment, but great to see this solution to a busy intersection.

This roundabout really jams up the freeway exit with 30 cars on the freeway shoulder. IMO unsafe to have cars stopped next to the high speed traffic. Are there plans to have two lanes on the exit to get cars off the highway?

Better than signals, keeps us moving. Roundabouts require full attention, drivers + peds have to put phones down and cooperate with each other.
