Shoreline Farmers Market to host Second Annual Shoreline Pride Celebration on Saturday, June 15, 2024

Tuesday, June 11, 2024

The Shoreline Farmers Market (SFM) is thrilled to announce the second annual Celebrate Pride in Shoreline event on Saturday, June 15th. This vibrant and inclusive event in the heart of Shoreline will be a joyous acknowledgment of love, diversity, and equality.

Featuring several local artists, this year’s Pride celebration builds on the success of the inaugural 2023 event. Emmy-nominated entertainer, writer and activist Sasha Scarlett will MC the day's activities.

Assigned Gay at Band (AGAB), an all-Queer marching band, will perform two sets. Cody James Megargee, a Shoreline-based queer, trans and disabled visual artist, will showcase his commissioned Celebrate Pride poster art, which will be available for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to Lambert House. Alethea Myers of the Face Paintery will offer colorful designs for attendees.

This year, the SFM has formed a dedicated steering committee to shape the Pride celebration, ensuring it embodies a spirit of inclusiveness. Composed of community members, market vendors, and local leaders, the committee has worked tirelessly to create an event that everyone can enjoy.

“As an openly gay resident and Shoreline business owner, I’m proud to be a board member of the Shoreline Farmers Market and especially to be involved in the Pride event,” said Zephyr Paquette, steering committee member and the owner of Le Petit Paquet in Richmond Beach.
“The Market brings together an array of diversity, includes all, and is working very specifically on fighting food insecurity.”

Attendees are invited to visit their favorite farmers and makers, connect with their neighbors, and enjoy the Pride lounge. Key resources from local organizations will be on hand for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, their loved ones, and the community at large.

“I was fortunate to participate in the first Shoreline Farmers Market Pride in 2023. Seeing all the shoppers sporting their rainbows and flags was wonderful.” said owner of Alluria Candles and Pride Steering Committee member Sarah Fletcher.
“As an out and proud vendor, I appreciate the welcoming environment that the market offers its queer vendors. Wishing everyone a very happy Pride in 2024, remember to shop local and support your queer creators.”

A grassroots 501(c)(3) organization, the Shoreline Farmers Market has partnered with the City of Shoreline and the Port of Seattle to present this event.

"While we have come a long way since Stonewall, we know there is still work to do," stated Shoreline Mayor Chris Roberts. "That is why celebrating Pride is so important. No one should be fearful of being who they are. I am proud to live in a community that celebrates its diversity, and I am proud to be an LGBTQ+ ally."

The Pride Celebration at the Shoreline Farmers Market will take place on June 15, 2024, from 10am to 2pm. The market is conveniently located at 18821 Aurora Avenue N, across from the YMCA and Sky Nursery. Walk, bike, bus, or drive and park. This event is wheelchair accessible.

Open to the public. Free admission. All are encouraged to attend and show their support for equality and inclusivity. Festive dress encouraged.

Op-Ed: Pride decorations stolen from Center for Human Services (CHS)

Sunday, June 25, 2023

By Beretta Gomillion, Executive Director CHS

Earlier this month, CHS staff and supporters decorated the trees and reader-board in front of our building at 17018 15th Ave NE in Shoreline as part of our celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Sometime during the weekend of June 16, 2023 person or persons unknown stole all of the decorations.

Some of the Pride decorations at CHS. All were stolen.

While we were certainly disappointed that anyone would do such as thing, we want it to be known that we remain open and affirming to all people and are proud to celebrate Pride with our LGBTQ+ staff, clients, and community.

A disproportionate number of LGBTQ+ people experience mental health struggles. Young people across King County and the country are facing increasingly difficult mental health challenges, and young people who are in underserved communities, including LGBTQ+ people, face even greater challenges.

According to King County’s Healthy Youth Survey, LGBTQ+ young people have an urgent need for mental health supports, with higher rates of suicidal ideation and attempts, and depression.

Personal, family, and social acceptance of sexual orientation and gender identity affects the mental health and personal safety of LGBT+ individuals.

Against the backdrop of societal harassment, discrimination, and violence, the fact that so many LGBTQ+ persons survive and thrive is a testament to their resilience.

The decorations were only up for a little over a week, but it was worth our effort. During that time, a young man with Down’s Syndrome saw our pride flags and other decorations and came in to talk to someone.

He stated that he feels so alone and doesn’t have the support of his family. He said that seeing our decorations made him feel safe and seen and that was something he was not accustomed to in his life.

Making at least one person feel supported and safe was worth the anguish the theft caused.

CHS affirms our obligation to promote the dignity of all people and dedicate ourselves to be a welcoming and safe place for everyone.

Tree wrap stolen from in front of City Hall

Wednesday, June 7, 2023

Community members were invited to create knitted tree wraps in honor of Pride Month and display them on street and park trees in Shoreline.

This wrap was in front of Shoreline City Hall.

Just a week after it was placed, it was stolen.

The artist who created it, Amanda Drewniak, issued an appeal.
I'm hoping someone who enjoys the piece took it. If you did message me- you can have it back at the end of the month. Please share this and help me get the piece back to the tree in front of City Hall.

The City has received reports of tree wraps being torn down from trees in Boeing Creek Park.

These works of art are individually hand crafted by volunteer creators and remain their property, loaned to the community for the month of June as a visual representation of the City’s support of our LGBTQIA+ residents. Police have been notified about the thefts.

If you know of the whereabouts of the removed art, please return it to City Hall or contact Neighborhoods Coordinator Constance Perenyi at cperenyi@shorelinewa.gov or 206-801-2253.

City of Shoreline celebrates Pride Month

Tuesday, June 7, 2022

On June 1, the City of Shoreline raised the Pride flag at City Hall in celebration of Pride month and in support of our LGBTQ+ community members.

Pride month commemorates the Stonewall riots that began on June 28, 1969. Patrons decided to resist the police harassment that took place regularly at the Stonewall, a gay bar in New York City. Previously, when raids happened, customers would leave the premises. However, this time the LGBTQ+ community held their ground and started a spontaneous demonstration that spawned additional demonstrations over several days. The riots were a tipping point and marked a significant point in the movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against the LGBTQ+ community, which continues today.

Pride trees. Photo courtesy City of Shoreline
By recognizing and celebrating Pride Month, we have an opportunity to recognize the contributions of our LGBTQ+ community members, and to acknowledge the ongoing challenges they face while striving to live openly and authentically.

Pride events are not only for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride is an opportunity to show support, to observe, listen, and learn about others.

In addition to the Pride flag at City Hall, and back by popular demand, the colorful rainbow tree wraps decorated the Park at Town Center on Aurora by City Hall and throughout Shoreline.

Feel free to celebrate Pride and decorate a tree near you!

If you have any questions, contact Neighborhoods Coordinator Constance Perenyi at cperenyi@shorelinewa.gov.

Tidal Artist Haven Pride month spectacular

Thursday, June 4, 2020

Tidal Artist Haven (TAH), the artist cooperative in North Seattle, is adapting our programming to bring virtual events to celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride this June.

Everyone will be welcome to participate in these events, but part of TAH's mission is to center the experiences of artists who are people of color, disabled people, and/or members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

In addition to our remote events, we are creating an electronic zine for Pride month to show that the 2SLGBTQIA+ community can still celebrate our victories and fight for our rights even if without a parade.

Featured works will celebrate diverse gender and sexuality; advocate for equality for marginalized groups at home and abroad and more! View the full call and submission criteria HERE

TAH kicks off our Pride events with a special open mic on Saturday the 13th at 4:00pm Pacific Time that will include music, poetry, short stories, and comedy. Each performer will get five minutes to share.

Saturday the 20th at 6:30pm we continue our monthly art hangout series with the Big Gay Remote Art Social.

Come work on your current project, in the comfort of your own home, while connecting with other creatives! This event has a suggested donation of $10, but those who donate $25 or more will receive a swag bag including a rainbow crayon, stickers designed by TAH members, and other art supplies.

Kits are available via contactless pickup at Tidal Artist Haven 1533 NE 145th St Seattle, WA 98125 Sunday 14th 11:00am - 3:00pm or Monday the 15th 6:00pm - 9:00pm and are limited to a first-claimed-first-served basis.

On Saturday the 27th TAH is having an Inner-Self Portrait workshop from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. While all our events are open to everyone, this event is especially for 2SLGBTQ+ folks to explore their inner selves and use art to develop strategies to reimagine how to share that with the outside world.

Those using their own materials may attend for a suggested donation of $10. A donation of $25 or more will include velvet paper, oil pastels, drawing paper, for this workshop, which students can claim via contactless pickup at our gallery on Thursday, June 18th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm and Friday, June 19th, 11:00am - 3:00pm

To commemorate "the year there almost wasn't a Pride" TAH will also be raising funds by the sale of our Pride 2020 T-shirts and Merch. Items featuring artwork designed in collaboration by our resident artists will be available HERE. A portion of the sales from this fundraiser will be set aside specifically for scholarships for low income students wishing to participate in the above events.

City of Shoreline stands for undoing racism, addressing inequality, and making change

Monday, June 1, 2020

Pride flag flies at Shoreline City Hall

From the City of Shoreline

June is Pride month. It is a time to celebrate the beginning of the civil rights movement for the LGBTQ+ community and the many contributions gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other identifying individuals have made in the world.

On June 1, the City of Shoreline raised the Pride flag at City Hall and it will fly all month long.

We encourage everyone to take some time this month to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community and find ways to honor their contributions.

Statement on the Death of George Floyd

Unfortunately, the beginning of Pride Month comes at a time when we are starkly reminded of the continued struggle against racism in this country.

For more than four hundred years, Black people in this country have been subjected to violent oppression through individual and systemic racism.

The death of George Floyd, a Black man living in Minneapolis, at the hands of a white police officer was not an isolated incident, but one more example of the violent struggle Black people face on a daily basis.

Many people have been shocked by the unrest seen in cities across the country as a result of the death of George Floyd. Amidst the many peaceful demonstrations, some individuals have chosen to cause harm.

However, we recognize that rage is rooted in generations of trauma, loss, and dehumanization that Black people have endured and then must relive every time another innocent life is lost.

We encourage individuals to speak out against this injustice, and we support the request of George Floyd’s family for people to protest peacefully and not engage in destructive actions. Let us work together to address all of the ways that systemic racism works to oppress people of color.

We all have a responsibility to undo racism, address inequality, and make change. Over the past few years, Shoreline City staff members have been engaged in training to help understand how racism affects us all and results in inequitable treatment and outcomes for communities of color across this country.

We are learning to recognize the many ways that institutions serve to maintain those inequities so that we can begin to develop strategies to undo policies and practices that perpetuate racism.

The Shoreline Police Department knows they must continually work to gain and maintain the trust of the community and that is why they emphasize training on de-escalation techniques and recognizing implicit bias.

Destinations: Two Pride Parades in Seattle this weekend

Monday, June 24, 2019

June is designated as Pride Month because the Pride movement started with the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village, New York in June of 1969. (Wikipedia article)

The biggest local events are this weekend, at the end of the month, with a festival on Capitol Hill and a parade in downtown Seattle.

Pride flag at Shoreline City Hall
Capitol Hill PrideFest begins at noon on Saturday, June 29, 2019 with events lasting until 9pm.

The biggest festival day on Capitol Hill all year long! Return to the place where Pride was held for decades, now a 5-block festival with food, vendors, 5 stages of entertainment, and the most diverse crowd you’ll see all year long. Best of all, it’s free.

500 E Pike, Seattle. Drive to the University Stadium light rail station and go to the Capitol Hill station and you'll be right in the middle of the festivities. Don't even think about driving. Capitol Hill is one of Seattle's most congested neighborhoods, even without 50,000 partygoers!

The 45th annual Seattle Pride Parade begins at 11am Sunday, June 30, 2019 and will go along 4th Avenue from Westlake Park to the Seattle Center. The parade is approximately four hours long.

Light rail is your best bet to get to this downtown Seattle event. There is a Westlake station that will put you right at the starting point of the parade.
