Editorial: It's census day - help get resources for Washington state

Thursday, April 2, 2020

By Diane Hettrick, Editor

April 1st is Census Day. It's not the deadline. It's the day picked for you to list people who live in your household.

Gov. Inslee says: I need 10 minutes of your time. The Census helps WA get the national resources and representation we need. Today, those needs are crystal clear. Help our state. Be Counted.

The Federal Government allocates resources based on population, which is why it is so critically important to get every person living here to be included in the census.

Representatives from local social service agencies like Center for Human Services and Turning Point are serving on the census committee and urging residents to fill out the simple form.

Political representation is based on population. The number of representatives in the Congressional House of Representatives is recalculated every ten years, based on the census numbers. If districts are increased in one state - they are decreased in another state.

We need to be fairly represented and get a fair amount of resources, based on the number of people we are serving.

Population determines the federal money we receive for schools, roads, Medicaid, SNAP, and other critical programs.

It is a very simple, bare bones form. List all the people who live at your address on April 1. There are no intrusive questions.

Do it now while you are thinking about it. Ten minutes. Fifteen if you have a multi-generational household.

If you have the paperwork that was mailed to you, it will save you a few steps, but you don't have to have it.

You can respond online, by phone, or by mail.

Editorial: Comments on political articles

Thursday, February 8, 2018

It's political season - from now until November, which is a very long time.

This year, I am slightly amending the policy on comments.

If you post a comment on a political article, you must state your full name - first and last.

Based on previous years, I'd like to remind you that political candidates are people. They are your neighbors. Their children go to our schools. They shop at our grocery stores. They go to our churches.

To paraphrase something I heard Bill Clinton say - we have to get over the notion that we have to dislike people we aren't voting for.

I remind you that comments are to be civil and as Editor, I reserve the right to delete any comment that goes over the line.

Over the years, there have been many thoughtful, informed comments on many topics that I have very regretfully deleted because the last sentence was an insult. It's always the last sentence. I can't edit comments - it's all or nothing.

So let's move forward with thoughtful dialog.

And remember that comments are opinions. How much of what is expressed is fact, you will need to check for yourself.

Dirty politics in Lake Forest Park

Friday, October 28, 2011

Lake Forest Park has some lively elections and strong opinions going on right now, which will probably continue beyond the elections.  However opponents are, for the large part, stating their positions openly, and staying on issues and qualifications.

Somebody has crossed the line.

Some residents of LFP received an anonymous mailing this week.  It came in a plain envelope, first class, hand addressed, with no return address.

Inside was a single sheet with a photo-shopped copy of the main webpage of the Shoreline Area News.  In the frame where real stories appear, the perpetrator had inserted two anonymous comments which they had posted on a story about one of the candidates.

Anyone can post any comment on any story in the SAN.  These comments do not appear on the main webpage as stories, nor do they go out on the email subscriptions, Facebook, Twitter, or the various RSS feeds.  You have to be on the particular story on the webpage and click the comments link.

We monitor the comments.  Comments like the ones in the flyer, which attack people on a personal level, using insults, vague innuendos, guilt by association, and unsupported accusations, are removed as soon as we see them.

Anyone is welcome to copy, forward, or link to our stories, as long as they credit us and provide the link to the story or to the website.

However, we do not appreciate being used as part of a dirty attack campaign.
