Building Stronger Communities Through Education and Literacy

Every September, Rotary International recognizes Basic Education and Literacy Month—a time to highlight the power of learning to change individual lives and strengthen entire communities.

Literacy is about far more than reading words on a page. It allows people to understand health information, secure employment, participate in civic life, support their families and pursue new opportunities. For children, a strong educational foundation opens doors that can shape the rest of their lives.

Yet access to education and literacy remains a challenge in communities around the world. Rotary International reports that more than 775 million people over the age of 15 cannot read or write. Rotary’s work focuses on strengthening the ability of communities to provide basic education, increasing adult literacy, supporting teachers and reducing disparities in access to learning. Basic education and literacy are among Rotary’s principal areas of focus because education is closely connected to nearly every aspect of community well-being. When people gain knowledge and skills, they are better equipped to improve their health, build economic security, participate in their communities and help create a more peaceful and equitable world.

Rotary clubs put this commitment into action in many ways. Depending on the needs of their communities, members may provide books and learning materials, support schools and teachers, fund scholarships, mentor young people, strengthen libraries, promote adult literacy or help improve access to safe and effective places to learn. Rotary members also work with schools, nonprofit organizations and community partners because lasting progress is strongest when it is built together.

Here in Shoreline, education and literacy are an important part of Shoreline Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self. Our club believes that investing in learning—locally and internationally—is an investment in opportunity, independence and the future.

Throughout September, Shoreline Rotary will share additional stories highlighting some of the people, partnerships and projects that bring this commitment to life. These stories will show that supporting education can take many forms, from helping students meet immediate needs to investing in improvements that expand learning opportunities for years to come.

Basic Education and Literacy Month also gives each of us an opportunity to consider how we can help. We can read with a child, mentor a student, donate books, support a teacher, volunteer with a literacy organization or help a community obtain the resources it needs to learn and thrive.

Education creates possibilities. Literacy gives people the tools to pursue them. By working together, we can help ensure that more children and adults have the opportunity to learn, grow and create lasting change in their own lives and communities.
