Shorecrest boys varsity tennis wins first match with Shorewood in five years, leaving the teams tied for first place in WESCO South

Shorecrest v Shorewood

The top two tennis teams in WESCO South faced off Monday, September 28, 2026 in an epic battle. This was the second meeting of the season between Shorecrest and Shorewood. Shorecrest fought hard in the first match but lost 5-2 in several really close individual matches. 

Today, Shorecrest finally found a way to secure the team victory after five consecutive years of losing to Shorewood, leaving Shorecrest and Shorewood tied for first place in WESCO South.

Singles 1 was a showdown between the top two players in WESCO South. Seb Sanchez (SW) is probably the quickest player out there. He tracks down shots that look like winners, finds a way to keep them in play, and usually gets the ball back deep enough to neutralize his opponent. Whenever he got a short ball, he was able to hit a sharp-angle winner off both wings.

Seb dominated the first set 6-2, but Mihai Stansky (SC) didn't let it get him down. Mihai changed his tactics in the second set and just started pummeling the ball, hitting numerous clean winners, which is almost impossible to do against Seb. Seb made it difficult, but Mihai pulled out the second set 6-4.

They went to a tiebreaker, and it looked like both players got a little tight and made some uncharacteristic unforced errors. It went back and forth until the score was tied 6-6. Seb won the next two points to put Shorewood up 8-6, but somehow Mihai responded by winning the next four points in a row to secure the victory.

Singles 2 looked like Ethan Dong (SW) was cruising in the first set. His technically sound groundstrokes helped him jump out to a 5-0 lead, but Lleyton Hoy (SC) realized he needed to change his tactics or the match was going to be over quickly in Shorewood's favor.

Once Lleyton adjusted his tactics, he took over and won seven games in a row to take the first set 7-5. Lleyton took control by staying steady and making Ethan earn every point. He kept up the momentum in the second set by keeping his shot tolerance high and hitting clean winners whenever Ethan left a ball short. Lleyton dominated the second set 6-2.

Singles 3 was another close match. Drew Johnson (SW) ripped the cover off his forehands and found a lot of winners. Miles Garbaccio (SC) fought hard and made Drew hit a ton of extra shots on every point. It was difficult to keep Drew pinned deep, but when Miles was able to do so, he won a lot more points. Drew eventually won the match 6-3, 7-5.

Singles 4 featured a dominant performance from Jacob Mignogna (SW). Jacob hit high, heavy forehands to Jasper Dahl's (SC) backhand and was also solid at the net. It was difficult for Jasper to get on offense, but when he did, he was successful. Jasper stayed tough and didn't double fault the entire match, but in the end Jacob prevailed 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles 1 saw Reid Bley/Drew Boyd (SW) put together a dominant performance against Keane Patterson/Winston Yao (SC). The Shorewood duo ripped several groundstrokes past the Shorecrest net player. Shorecrest hung in there with solid serves and returns, but in the end Shorewood took the match 6-2, 6-3.

Doubles 2 featured Eli Barr/Grant Carpenter (SC) taking control of the net by both moving forward and putting a ton of pressure on Zachary Gordon/Elliott Hunter (SW). The Shorecrest duo won the first set 6-3 with clean volleys. Shorewood made it much closer in the second set with some strong serving, but Shorecrest managed to hold on and win the second set 7-5.

That left the team score tied 3-3, with only Doubles 3 still on the court. Whoever won that match would win the match for their team.

Doubles 3 started with Levi Leptich/Luke Artherholt (SC) coming out strong. They made sure not to hit the ball to the net player from the baseline, and both Shorecrest players were hungry at the net, putting volleys away left and right. Isaac Binz/Sawyer Lund (SW) ripped some nice returns down the line off Shorecrest's second serves, but Shorecrest controlled the first set 6-1.

In the second set, Shorecrest continued to dominate. Luke was crushing first serves, and Levi closed at the net to end point after point. Shorecrest took the second set 6-1 as well, giving Shorecrest the 4-3 team victory.
