Janet (Patches) Robertson 1929-2026

Janet (Patches) Robertson passed away on September 24, 2026, at age 96. She was born in Seattle on November 6, 1929, the daughter of Margaret and her beloved stepfather, Hugh. 

Janet grew up on a magical acre in Lake City, in a house built over Thornton Creek. Janet graduated from Lincoln High School and earned her degree in Home Economics from the University of Washington in 1953. 

Janet taught for 10 years at Oak Harbor High School before moving on to Shoreline High School in 1968. 

In 1970, Janet founded the Vocational Power Sewing program, working with some of the largest names in fashion and outdoor wear at the time. 

She spearheaded the construction of The Factory, a double-wide portable full of power sewing machines donated by industry. 

Over the years, Janet taught hundreds of students how to sew ski coats, sweaters, and upholstery. Many went on to find employment in the field.

Janet won many awards over the years, including Shoreline School District Teacher of the Year, and in 1980, she was honored to be named the National Home Economics Teacher of the Year, a memory she cherished for the rest of her life.

Janet retired in 1986 and spent all her free time in the gardens she loved. She spent many happy hours “digging in the dirt,” as she would say, and her gardens were beautiful.

Janet is survived by her son Bill (Gail), Brother John Vinton, sister Connie Westgate, grandchildren Neal, Lorin, and Alec, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Janet was preceded in death by her son, John, and grandson Evan.
