Leo Valenzuela, Spanish interpreter, has been selected as the 2016 Shoreline Schools Support Person of the Year.

“Leo is more than just an interpreter,” said Lake Forest Park Elementary Principal Aimee Miner. “His connections with families and staff go so much further because he really listens to families and helps staff at schools understand their questions and concerns."
"He encompasses what Shoreline is all about, caring for your community, contributing in a positive way and supporting students and families," she added.

Valenzuela will be honored at a reception on Monday, March 14 at 6:15pm in the Shoreline Center lobby as the District kicks off Support Staff Appreciation Week. The community is invited to attend.

The Support Person of the Year award has been made annually since 1998 and is selected by a committee of staff and community members from nominations received from around the District. The recipient also receives a professional development grant from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.

Over the past two years Marc has taken on the responsibility of coordinating the successful moves of both high school staffs into their new buildings.

Leslie Martin, Support Person of the Year
“Leslie does whatever she can to keep us safe,” her colleagues wrote. “Immediately following the Sandy Hook tragedy, she toured the whole campus, checking to see what needed to be done in every room to improve safety. In true Leslie style, she led the charge, not content to wait for a committee.”

Don Warrick, 2012 Shoreline Support Person of the Year

Thursday, February 16, 2012

From left, Syre Principal David Tadlock, Superintendent Sue Walker, Support Person of the Year Don Warrick and his wife, Beth, and Executive Director of Schools Brian Schultz.

Don Warrick, paraeducator and student supervisor at Syre Elementary School, has been selected as the 2012 Shoreline School District Support Person of the Year.

Don will be honored at a reception at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 5 in the Shoreline Center lobby, prior to the School Board meeting that evening. The community is invited. He will receive a $250 grant from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation. The District will celebrate Support Staff Appreciation Week March 5 to 9.

Don has worked at Syre since 2004 and has worked in many roles there, including student supervisor on the playground and at recess, resource room paraeducator, high impact paraeducator, and all-day kindergarten paraeducator.

“Don is dedicated to the students of Syre Elementary, providing academic, social and emotional support. His words and actions make a positive difference in the lives of children and our community. Don’s passion is to serve our community and prepare young adults to make our world into a better place,” his nomination read in part.

His is often the first face Syre students see coming off the bus each morning.

“Partly because of Don’s presence and greeting, children enjoy arriving at school each day and ready to learn,” the nomination said. “As a resource room and general classroom paraeducator, Don is uniquely talented in supporting student learning. He works with many ages effectively and utilizes his skills to help struggling students make progress.”

In recent years, Don has led or participated in numerous school committees. As Site Council facilitator, Don has provided guidance for meaningful dialogue about Syre programs.

Don received the Golden Acorn Award from the Syre PTA two years ago. He and his wife Beth were also Golden Acorn recipients when they were Lake Forest Park Elementary parents.

In the community, Don has volunteered for 30 years with the Dale Turner Family YMCA, previously serving as Board chair and currently as co-chair of the program committee. He is a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Shoreline, where he leads a men’s group and volunteers with its free meals program.

Prior to joining Shoreline Schools, Don spent 35 years working for Qwest Communications in various business and finance positions. He is a graduate of Shoreline High School, holds bachelors and masters degrees from Washington State University, and served in the Washington National Guard.

The Shoreline Schools Support Person of the Year award has been made annually since 1997 to honor outstanding classified staff members. The recipient is selected by a committee of parents, staff and administrators from nominations submitted from across the District.

Three Shoreline School District employees share the honor as 2010-11 Shoreline Schools Support Person of the Year.

Friday, February 18, 2011

Left to right, Greg DiMaio, John Martin and Rich Maden, 2010-11 Shoreline Schools Support Persons of the Year.

The District warehouse/courier team of Greg DiMaio, Rich Maden and John Martin will receive the award at a reception at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 7 in the Shoreline Center lobby. The community is invited. Shoreline Schools will celebrate Support Staff Appreciation Week from March 7 to 11.

“While each of these gentlemen would warrant a nomination individually, the fact that they work so integrally as a team performing critical support services to the District makes it logical to nominate them collectively,” their nomination read in part. It is the first time that three employees have shared the award.

Greg DiMaio has worked for the District since 1974. He carries the intra-District mail, media resources, computers and other items with a level of reliability that is truly remarkable. During the snowstorms of 2008-09, Greg used his own vehicle rather than the District truck because he felt it would better allow him to complete all of his scheduled runs.

“If it will fit in his truck, Greg is more than happy to deliver it. Many sites can set their clocks based on Greg’s daily arrival,” the nomination said.

Warehouse team member John Martin has worked for Shoreline since 1978 and Rich Maden since 1985. Most recently, as the warehouse was being converted to the District’s Central Kitchen in Hamlin Park, they not only assisted with that complex project, but also performed all of their regular services despite reduced space and disruption in their working environment.

John and Rich have moved or hauled just about everything in their careers in Shoreline. When the District’s elementary and middle schools underwent extensive remodeling in the 1980s and 1990s, they assisted with relocation to transition sites and the return when the projects were completed. They have hauled band instruments and athletic equipment to competitions, camping gear for sixth grade trips, and many stage sets and props for high school plays and concerts, not to mention hundreds of chairs for various assemblies.

“It is their ‘can do’ attitude that makes it so nice to work with them. That attitude, day after day, year after year, has made them an invaluable resource to Shoreline Schools,” their nomination said.

The Support Person of the Year is selected annually from nominations made by staff, students, parents and members of the community. Recipients receive a grant from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.
