Update from the Northwest Junior Pipe Band after Glasgow Piping championship competition

Wednesday, August 17, 2022

Kevin Auld and the NWJPB in Glasgow
From Director Kevin Auld

Apparently we never posted an update after the World Pipe Band Championships. We were too tired!

So.... Three days later here it is.

Overall the band placed 14th out of 23 bands in grade 4A - a result we are very happy with.

Grade 4A is a very challenging grade with an extremely high standard and we were happy to play among so many great bands.

The day at Glasgow Green was one of excitement, intensity, camaraderie, laughter, pride and happy tears.

In the end the band agreed that it was our best performance of the entire season.

Any fan of the 80s tv show The A Team will remember the quote - " I love it when a plan comes together." That pretty much sums up our season.

A huge thank-you to all of our supporters, sponsors, donors and volunteers for helping to make this trip happen. Stay tuned for more photos and video of our adventures.

Who is the Northwest Junior Pipe Band?

The Northwest Junior Pipe Band (NWJPB), based in Shoreline, is the only youth pipe band in Washington State and is well known throughout the Pacific Northwest. The band is comprised of pipers and drummers aged 8-18.

NWJPB is proud to be the 2015 and 2016 BCPA Grand Aggregate winner, Washington State Champions and the US West Coast Drum Corps Champions.

The band has travelled to Scotland three times to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships, most recently in 2015, where they placed 6th in their division, making them the highest ranked juvenile band outside of Scotland.

NWJPB is dedicated to preserving Scottish musical heritage and developing young musicians. The band operates its own Pipe Band School offering beginning instruction for pipes and drums for youth ages six and up. Along with competing and performing, band members learn the true meaning of dedication, teamwork, responsibility, and serving their community.

Northwest Junior Pipe Band is one of those rare groups that provides enriching, and fun experiences for youth, as well as something highly prized by our kids – a strong social network supporting one another through life-long friendships!

Shoreline and Edmonds based NWJPB plays a variety of venues (private and public), including parades, Veteran’s and Memorial Day events, Northwest Folklife, competitions all across the Northwest, British Columbia and abroad, weddings and funerals, and coming up, their own concert held at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

If you are interested in learning more about the band, or want to support the NWJPB program, join the band at their annual fundraising concert, or stop by the Calvin Presbyterian Church in Shoreline on any Thursday evening, where the band practices from 6:30-8:30. The Northwest Junior Pipe Band placed second at the North Berwick Highland Games in East Lothian, Scotland on Saturday, August 8.

The games attract 10,000 participants and spectators, with increasing attendance every year. The closest town is North Berwick. According to Wikipedia, "North Berwick is a seaside town and former royal burgh in East Lothian, Scotland. It is situated on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, approximately 25 miles east north east of Edinburgh."

Next week they go to the Worlds 2015 competition, August 14-15 in Glasgow, Scotland. The Worlds attract more than 200 bands and thousands of spectators each year to Glasgow Green.

In 2014, 223 pipe bands congregated on Glasgow Green to compete, with some 30,000 people attending the event, and thousands more following the action via live web streaming.
As well as being the premier Pipe Band competition, The Worlds is also host to Highland Dancing, a Highland Games and a specialist food village which combine to make a visit to the event unforgettable.

Lead instructors for NWJPB are Kevin Auld, Marcie MacRae, and V. Scott Parker.

Scotland is a lovely country of steep green hills and free-falling streams. The Scots are no strangers to rain, so the rain on Saturday was no deterrent to Scotoberfest.

Hot brots

Participants enjoyed beer, brats, and rummage sale bargains with the Northwest Scottish community.

A friendly greeter at the door

Hosted by Northwest Junior Pipe Band on Saturday, October 25, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 722 N 145th St in Shoreline.

Rummage sales

The event was in support of the NorthWest Junior Pipe Band, who played and occasionally danced throughout the event.

No shortage of talent
