Letter to the Editor: Farewell to Leena's Restaurant

Saturday, October 29, 2022

To the Editor:

I am so sorry to see that Leena's Restaurant in North City is to be replaced by yet another six story apartment building. We have enjoyed eating there for years, and know people from surrounding cities who also eat there as often as they are able.

It seems that once Shoreline gets done approving multi-housing buildings in North City, there won't be a business district left for any of us to enjoy. We all will have to drive further and further for the services that used to be local.  What a shame!

Any news as to when this will happen? I completely agree- Shoreline is loosing places to eat, shop, have fun. Leenas is one of the few left sit down restaurants around Shoreline, to share a meal and meet friends. Very much hope Leenas will relocate and not just fade away.

When are they closing Thier doors?! Nooo!!

We need more good places to eat not housing. Where are they going to park all the extra cars? There is already a problem around Arabella's and it is hard to get out on 15th from 179th. This will make it even worse.

Shoreline had made concessions to developers to bring more housing to our city. Perhaps they should consider concessions to retailers to fill up the street level of these buildings. They could subsidize the infrastructure needed for cafes or restaurants or offer a first year tax break. Get creative and replace what we are losing.

You have to be joking! I no longer support the city of Shoreline.

Unbelievable!

I have such wonderful memories of my husband (who passed almost 18 years ago) of many Saturday breakfasts. Apartments are taking over everywhere. Agreed with the person who suggested retail on the first floor of ALL these buildings like they do in Europe. It certainly would cut down on traffic.

The letter to the editor unfortunately left out the critical information that the proposed new building is a mixed-use building that includes 3,800 SF of retail, plus additional parking. I have no idea if Leena's will make up the new retail place, but the retail component is not completely lost, as the letter implies.

While it is true that the proposed building would be mixed use, the chances of any small business being able to close for the duration of the construction are pretty slim. And as is the norm now, there are only 215 parking spots for 228 units, which means more people parking where ever they can in the area.

It's sad. Stricker's, Voula's, so many great venues with cool folks and years of great memories. At least Jay's is still around, and Jersey's was able to move to a better location farther south. Really not impressed with most of what's gone into lower retail spaces without anything close to adequate parking.

Is there any current timeline when Leena's will be closing?

Never, financing didn’t go through

Thank you, Anonymous person who posted about financing not going through. I don't know about "never" -- but a bullet was dodged at least for now! We were there tonight, and they had a help-wanted sign posted, so I figured it wouldn't be "soon" -- and came to see if there was news. This is the best news I never expected!

Just to fully understand. The financing to build was not approved? If so, that is great! We have already two big building there, the postmark and the Arabella. Past 7am on weekdays, traffic is bad on 15th.
