WeatherWatcher: more storms on the way

Monday, January 16, 2012

At 10:17am this morning, January 16, 2012 the National Weather Service in Seattle has issued two Winter Storm Watches for the area including Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

A winter storm watch means conditions are favorable for severe winter weather.

  • A a winter storm watch is usually an indication that a storm warning will follow if the expected conditions are imminent.
  • A winter storm warning is issued for the lowlands when 4 inches of snow or more is likely within a 12 hour period of time.

Winter storm watch #1 in effect from late Tonight through Tuesday afternoon.
Winter storm watch #2 in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday night.

Winter storm watch #1 is in effect from late tonight through Tuesday afternoon. (No specific time is given for watches.)
Snow accumulations of 3-7 inches are possible tonight into Tuesday. This is due to a second Arctic front that will push south through the Puget Sound region tonight.

Winter storm watch #2 has been issued for late Tuesday night, through Wednesday evening, Accumulation amounts are not predicted yet, however, they expect them to be the most significant of this entire week. Wide spread power outages are expected with this Wednesday storm. It is a very potent and moist Pacific storm, so winds are also possible. A changeover to rain is expected with this storm Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, depending on the storm track.

Further ahead:
Looks inconsistent still, however more and more forecasters are pointing to another plunge into freezing winter weather by Saturday. I'll continue to provide updates as the latest winter storms develop.
