WeatherWatcher: Hail gives way to warm and gray

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

In brief:
  • The week ahead: more rain, more gray, but warmer.
  • Last weeks highlights: Wind, wind and more wind, rain, and some hail.
  • Last weeks weather data. Average temperature graphed for complete month of December 2011.

The week ahead:

  • We'll continue to have a series of fronts producing rain at times through the week. It's going to be about 5-8°F warmer than we've been used to the past several weeks.

Last weeks highlights:

  • Christmas Day windstorm: Gusts to 37mph in neighborhoods inland, up to 50mph near Richmond Beach, and along other exposed areas. Area gusts: Shorecrest High: 37mph, Brookside Elementary: 28mph, and Central Market had 37mph. I wasn't able to find a Richmond Beach area weather station online.
  • December 27th: National Weather Service issued a wind advisory.
  • December 28th: National Weather Service issued a wind advisory. Both wind advisories turned out not to be nearly as significant as the Christmas Day winds.
  • December 30th: Cooler and unstable air moved through the area, producing a narrow convergence band that drifted over Shoreline generating a short lived hail storm that turned the ground white for a short time.
  • Rain: We received 1.4 inches of rain this week, our normal rainfall for December is around 3-5 inches.
