Thursday, February 9, 2012

The Shorecrest boys’ basketball team plays a Northwest District 3A tournament semifinal game Friday at Mountlake Terrace after the Scots defeated Ferndale 47-46 in a first-round home game Wednesday.

Shorecrest takes a 17-4 season record into the game at Mountlake Terrace (20-1), a team that defeated Everett, 54-34 in a first-round tournament game at Mountlake Terrace Wednesday.

Mountlake Terrace entered the tournament as the Western Conference 3A division champion. Shorecrest tied for second with Shorewood, but Shorewood got the No. 2 Wesco berth in the tournament by scoring a victory over first-place Mountlake Terrace.

Shorecrest’s Wednesday victory came over a Ferndale team that qualified for the tournament by winning its final regular-season game. Before Ferndale defeated 2A Mount Baker in the final Northwest Conference game Monday, Ferndale had been tied with Sedro-Woolley for the second of the NWC’s two District 3A tournament berths.

The winner of Shorecrest’s game with Mountlake Terrace plays Feb. 17 against the winner of the Friday game between Glacier Peak and Oak Harbor for the District championship and the No. 1 berth in the State 3A tournament.

The Friday loser could get the District’s No. 2 tournament berth by winning games Feb. 14, 17 and 21.
In Shorecrest’s 47-46 home victory over Ferndale Wednesday, the Scots fell behind 17-12 after the first quarter and 25-24 at halftime before taking a 43-34 lead after three quarters and holding off the Eagles for the one-point victory, Junior Chibuogwu led Shorecrest with 14 points.
