HomeTechHacker: Unmasking the Dark Web: A Closer Look at its Functions and Dangers

Saturday, April 27, 2024

By Marlon Buchanan

In the vast expanse of the internet, one realm remains hidden from regular browsing: the dark web.

Inaccessible through conventional search engines, it serves as both a sanctuary for private communication channels and a breeding ground for criminal activities.

Let's explore workings of the dark web, shedding light on its technology, legitimate uses, and the myriad dangers associated with navigating its murky depths.

What Is the Dark Web and How Does It Work?

The origins of the dark web are shrouded in mystery, but its significance in digital security conversations is undeniable. Originally employed by the United States Department of Defense for secure communications, the dark web now caters to users seeking anonymity. Utilizing a technology called "onion routing," it employs a network of nodes and darknets to encapsulate messages in layers of encryption, akin to the layers of an onion. This intricate process shields users from unwarranted surveillance and tracking.

Accessing this hidden part of the internet requires specialized software like Freenet, I2P, or Tor (The Onion Router), with Tor being the most popular dark web browser. Tor provides robust encryption layers and the ability to route internet traffic randomly through its relay networks, ensuring user anonymity.

Due to its unavailability on mainstream search engines, the dark web hosts unregulated websites operating without oversight, giving rise to both legitimate and illicit activities.

Is the Dark Web Useful?

While the dark web is synonymous with criminality, it also serves several legitimate purposes:
  1. Anonymous Email Services: Offering encrypted email services for users exchanging sensitive information.
  2. Circumventing Government Censorship: Providing a refuge for users in countries with oppressive surveillance measures.
  3. Collaborating Anonymously with Journalists: Assisting whistleblowers in reporting cases of fraud, abuse, and corruption.
  4. Securing Cryptocurrency Wallets: Offering services to enhance the anonymity of cryptocurrency transactions.

Despite these legal uses, the dark web is rife with illegal activities, prompting the question: are its benefits worth the inherent dangers?

The Dark Web and Cybercrime

The dark web is a breeding ground for various cybercrimes, including identity theft, credit card fraud, malware distribution, and scams. Darknet markets facilitate illegal transactions, with a global value of $1.5 billion in 2022. Illicit products sold include stolen data, granting scammers access to personal, financial, and even medical information.

However, the true dangers lie in the array of services accessible to cybercriminals:
  1. Software Exploit Kits: Facilitating attacks on vulnerabilities in systems.
  2. Ready-to-Use Malware: Including keyloggers, spyware, Trojans, and ransomware.
  3. Botnets: Networks of private devices infected with malware.
  4. Money Laundering: Enabling the concealment of illicit funds.

The dark web's illicit activities range from drug and human trafficking to more heinous crimes, making it a perilous space.

Navigating the Dark Web Safely

For those daring to explore the dark web, caution is paramount:
  1. Avoid Unsecured Sites: Steer clear of unsecured sites, never divulge personal information, and refrain from downloading illegal content.
  2. Use a VPN: Enhance privacy by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
  3. Keep Devices Updated: Reduce vulnerabilities by ensuring devices are up-to-date.
  4. Refer to Directories: Use dark web directories to access genuine sites.

You can learn a lot more about staying safe on the Internet, including the dark web, by enrolling in HomeTechHacker’s Personal Cybersecurity Protection course or reading The Personal Cybersecurity Manual.

While accessing the dark web itself isn't illegal, engaging in the criminal activities rampant within it is. I urge you to prioritize safety, protect personal information, and abstain from downloading anything from dubious websites. The dark web may harbor valuable resources for some, but many of its benefits come at the expense of others.

HomeTechHacker: 7 Wi-Fi Router features to look for

Saturday, May 21, 2022

Marlon Buchanan
HomeTechHacker
By Marlon Buchanan

Your Wi-Fi router is the most important network device in your home.

It plays a large role in your home network’s security, speed, and stability.

Here are 7 features to look for if you are in the market for a new Wi-Fi router:

1. Guest network capability
You want to have a separate network for guests for security purposes. It keeps your home network devices safe from potentially compromised devices that you don’t control. It also allows you to keep your primary home network password private.

2. Mesh capability
Strong Wi-Fi throughout your home is sometimes hard to achieve with just one device providing your Wi-Fi access. A mesh Wi-Fi router system provides multiple points of Wi-Fi access all integrated into one system. This is especially useful if you have a larger home, or have trouble spots where Wi-Fi coverage is spotty or slow.

If you aren’t sure if you need a mesh Wi-Fi router system you don’t have to start off buying one. You can buy a router that has the capability to integrate into a mesh system so you can expand in the future.

3. Automatic firmware updates
Keeping your router up to date is one of the most important ways to keep your home network secure. New exploits are found frequently and these updates contain fixes that protect against new security vulnerabilities. Your router should at least be able to notify you of available firmware updates.

4. Management App
Older routers have basic features that you can access and configure by logging into a website and navigating the web pages for the features you want to configure. Many newer routers come with apps that make navigating all of these features easily and conveniently done from the comfort of your mobile device.

5. WPA3
WPA3, or Wi-Fi Protected Access 3, is the latest standard for securing Wi-Fi connections. It uses more powerful encryption than WPA2, better protecting your network from snooping hackers. Most Wi-Fi devices don’t yet support WPA3, but newer devices do and soon it will become ubiquitous.

6. MU-MIMO

MU-MIMO, which stands for Multiple User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output, is a Wi-Fi technology that increases the capacity and efficiency of your router’s Wi-Fi connections, allowing it to handle more WiFi-intensive activities such as streaming and gaming. This technology is more important if you have a lot of Wi-Fi devices on your network.

7. Wi-Fi 6
Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, is the latest Wi-Fi standard. It is faster and more stable than its predecessors. Theoretical speeds for Wi-Fi 6 top out at 250% of the previous standard, Wi-Fi 5. As a bonus, Wi-Fi 6-certified devices come with WPA3 and MU-MIMO.

Look for these seven features when shopping for a Wi-Fi router. If you get one that has Wi-Fi 6, it is likely to have many if not all of the other features as well. Check out my HomeTechHacker Technology Advisor for personalized advice on which Wi-Fi 6 router to buy.

HomeTechHacker: Outsmarting Cybercriminals 101: Follow these Top 5 Tips

Sunday, July 23, 2023

By Marlon Buchanan

Cybersecurity is a growing concern for individuals and businesses alike. With cybercriminals becoming more sophisticated in their tactics, it's important to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your sensitive data.

Let’s discuss five tips for outsmarting cybercriminals and keeping your information safe.

Tip 1: Use Strong Passwords

The first and perhaps most important tip for outsmarting cybercriminals is to use strong passwords. A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and be a phrase that’s easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess that doesn’t contain personal information like your name or birthdate. You should also avoid using the same password for multiple accounts, as this can make it easy for cybercriminals to gain access to all of your sensitive information.

Tip 2: Keep Your Software Up-to-Date

Another step in outsmarting cybercriminals is to keep your software up-to-date. This step includes your operating system, web browsers, mobile phones, and applications you use regularly. Updates often contain security patches that help protect against known vulnerabilities that cybercriminals may exploit.

Tip 3: Be Wary of Phishing Emails

Phishing is a common tactic used by cybercriminals to gain access to sensitive information. These attacks often come in the form of emails that appear to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or online retailer.

However, these emails may contain links to fake websites or ask for personal information like your login credentials or credit card information. To outsmart these attacks, be wary of emails that ask for personal information and always double-check the sender's email address and the URL of any links included in the message.

Tip 4: Use Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security that requires you to provide two forms of identification before accessing an account. This can include something you know, like a password, and something you have, like a mobile phone. By using two-factor authentication, you can make it much more difficult for cybercriminals to gain access to your accounts even if they do manage to obtain your login credentials.

Tip 5: Be Mindful of Your Online Behavior

Your online behavior can also play a critical role in outsmarting cybercriminals. Avoid sharing sensitive personal information, such as your full name, address, phone number, or financial details, on public forums, social media, or other public platforms.

Be cautious of the information you post online and limit the amount of personal information you share. Additionally, be wary of unsolicited emails, messages, or phone calls asking for personal information, even if they appear to be from trusted sources. Cybercriminals often use social engineering tactics to gather information and gain unauthorized access to accounts.

HomeTechHacker: Add Wi-Fi 6 to your home without buying a new router

Monday, February 20, 2023

By Marlon Buchanan

Do you have slow or dead Wi-Fi spots in your home? Do you want to speed up your Wi-Fi and make sure you can take advantage of the speed your new laptop or mobile phone can handle? Have you waited to upgrade and improve your Wi-Fi because you don’t want to replace your Wi-Fi router? Maybe all you need is a Wi-Fi 6 access point!

What’s Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, is the latest Wi-Fi standard. It is faster and more stable than its predecessors. Theoretical speeds for Wi-Fi 6 top out at 250% of the previous standard, Wi-Fi 5. As a bonus, Wi-Fi 6-certified devices come with WPA3, the latest Wi-Fi security standard. They also come with MU-MIMO, which helps Wi-Fi speeds when there are multiple devices connected.

What’s a Wi-Fi access point?

A Wi-Fi access point, sometimes called a wireless access point, connects to a router, switch, or hub via Ethernet and emits a Wi-Fi signal for connecting to your network. Wi-Fi access points are used for extending a wireless network.

You can add a Wi-Fi access point to your home network anywhere you have an Ethernet network connection. You don’t need to replace your router at all, as an access point can work with your Wi-Fi router. The best practice is to make the wireless access point Wi-Fi names and passwords the same as your router’s Wi-Fi networks to make it work seamlessly with your Wi-Fi devices.

Wireless access points can be really helpful if there’s a spot in your home that has a weak Wi-Fi signal. And, of course, you can use access points to add faster Wi-Fi standards like Wi-Fi 6 to your home.

Wi-Fi access point
Recommended Wi-Fi access points

There are lots of good Wi-Fi access points, but I generally recommend TP-Link access points for most people. I personally own the EAP 610 as it has a great combination of features and prices. If you want a Wi-Fi access point and want to save some money and aren’t interested in Wi-Fi 6, I generally recommend (and own) the TP-Link EAP 225.

DIY Home Security Systems for Beginners
By Marlon Buchanan

Setting up a home security system used to mean expensive contracts, professional installation, and a maze of wires.

These days, it’s easier than ever to create your own setup using affordable, smart, DIY-friendly technology—and you don’t need to be especially tech-savvy to get started.

Thanks to advances in connected devices and wireless communication, you can now build a home security system that fits your space, your budget, and your comfort level.

Before diving in, there are a few key things every beginner should know.

Start with the basics

At a minimum, most DIY security setups include a few essentials: door and window sensors, a motion detector or two, and some way to alert you when something’s not right. These components are often bundled into starter kits from popular brands like Ring, SimpliSafe, Wyze, and Abode.

Installation usually involves peel-and-stick sensors and an app on your phone. Once set up, you’ll receive alerts if a door is opened or movement is detected when your system is armed.

Add cameras and doorbells for visibility

Outdoor cameras and smart video doorbells are now mainstream and easy to install. A video doorbell gives you a live view of who is at your door, and cameras can alert you when there’s movement on your property.

Many of today’s cameras include features like night vision, two-way audio, and motion zones. You can even find models with person, package, or vehicle detection, which makes alerts more relevant and reduces false alarms.

If you want to learn more about how these types of devices have evolved and what’s available now, check out my article on the evolution of home security from alarms to AI-powered systems. You can also get personalized advice on which smart camera to get by checking out the HomeTechHacker Wi-Fi Camera Advisor tool.

Think beyond intrusions

Security isn’t just about burglars. Smart sensors can alert you to smoke, carbon monoxide, water leaks, or even unexpected temperature changes. Motion-activated lighting, smart locks, and garage door sensors all help create a more secure and responsive home.

You might be surprised how many ways a connected home can improve your safety. I’ve broken down several examples in a piece I wrote on how smart homes improve safety and security.

Don't forget the app

One of the biggest advantages of a smart DIY system is that it is all controllable from your phone. Arm or disarm your system remotely, check camera footage, get notifications, and even automate schedules.

Just make sure you choose a system that offers features you’ll actually use, without locking you into an expensive monthly plan—unless professional monitoring is something you want.

Start small and expand as needed

The beauty of a DIY system is that you don’t have to get everything at once. Start with a basic kit and grow your setup over time. Maybe that means adding a camera to the backyard, installing smart locks, or integrating your system with Alexa or Google Assistant.

Security tech continues to improve, and many newer systems can work together across brands. That flexibility means you can build a system that matches your lifestyle instead of forcing yourself into a rigid setup.

Final thoughts

DIY home security has come a long way. It’s more affordable, more flexible, and easier to use than ever. A little research and a few smart purchases can go a long way toward giving you peace of mind—and control over your home’s safety.

HomeTechHacker: 5 Settings to Configure on Your WI-FI Router Now

Sunday, September 3, 2023

Router
By Marlon Buchanan

Your Wi-Fi router is the most important home networking device. It protects your home from bad actors. It also plays a key role in your network’s speed and stability.

Making sure your Wi-Fi router is configured to give the safest and the best experience is important. Here are seven settings that you should configure now.

1. Use the highest Wi-Fi security standard

WPA3, or Wi-Fi Protected Access 3, is the latest standard for securing Wi-Fi connections. It uses more powerful encryption than WPA2, better protecting your network from snooping hackers. Most Wi-Fi devices don’t yet support WPA3, but newer devices do and soon they will become ubiquitous.

Make sure you have WPA3 enabled on your router for the devices that do support it. Routers that support WPA3 are backward compatible with WPA2, which is the lowest standard you should use (WEP isn’t secure anymore).

WiFi lock
2. Set your router to automatically update your firmware

Your router (and the firewall in it) is your primary defense against hackers penetrating your network.

New vulnerabilities are discovered all the time, and you want to make sure that your router has the latest protections.

Periodically check to see whether your router has an available firmware update and keep your router up to date. Many routers will notify you of a firmware update, or automatically update it based on a schedule you choose.

3. Set up Quality of Service (QoS)

Quality of service, or QoS, allows your router to prioritize Internet uploads and downloads for certain types of traffic (e.g., video streaming, videoconferencing, and voice over IP) and devices (e.g., computers, smart TVs, and gaming consoles). This helps improve the experience of devices that need solid connections. I recommend taking the time to learn how to enable and configure your router’s QoS settings, especially if you have a slower Internet connection.

4. Change the default router username and password

You never want to leave the default username and password on any Internet-connected device. It leaves an easy door to compromise your network security. I highly recommend that you change the default username and password before doing any configuration of your router.

5. Set up a guest network

If you don’t have a guest network, you may find yourself in a situation where you have guests over and you have to give them your password so they can access your network.

This gives your guests not only your password, which may be sensitive and used for different accounts (although, you should not reuse passwords) but also access to all of your networked devices (printers, network shares, PCs, etc.).

A proper guest network allows you to set a separate and shareable password for your guests. It also protects your private computer resources from being compromised by guests.

Many routers make configuring a guest network simple. If yours does, it’s worth learning how to configure it. Otherwise, consider purchasing a router or access point that has the feature.

LED Strip
By Marlon Buchanan

After reading the title of this article some people are thinking that it is way too early to think about holiday lights.

Others, on the other hand, are thinking it's never too early to get started!

No matter where you sit on this spectrum, this article will give you some tips for jazzing up your holiday lights using LEDs.

Look for connected LEDs

You can find LED lights everywhere. Compared to older incandescent lights, they are more energy efficient, run cooler, and are capable of displaying many different colors.

However, if you buy a plain set of lights, chances are it simply comes on and goes off when you plug it in and doesn’t change colors.

LED String
You can also find lights that have control boxes that will let you cycle through a few colors and/or patterns.

But, it would be better to get a set of lights you can control remotely, such as ones that are Bluetooth enabled or Wi-fi enabled.

These lights are likely to have more patterns and features than other lights. And, you often don’t need a timer, as you can usually program them through an app.

You may even be able to control them with your preferred voice assistant.

“Siri, turn on my holiday lights!”

Not to mention, many connected LEDs can integrate with each other to create coordinated light displays. You can potentially coordinate multiple light displays if the lights have multiple colors and patterns.

Addressable LED string
Look for individually addressable LED lights

The holy grail of LED lights are individually addressable LED strips and strings.

Most LED lights can only be one or two different colors at a time.

In contrast, individually addressable LED lights allow control of each individual light by itself, so your strip can be just about any combination of colors.

This allows you to create impressive animated light displays.

Another advantage of individually addressable lights is that you get a ton of color choices. Most lights are 24-bit, meaning that each LED can be 16.7 million different colors. You can also control how bright they are too.

If you want to have the ultimate control you can pair individually addressable lights with a separate controller, or even build your own controller!

LEDs on the fence

I got the addressable LED light bug a couple of years. In addition to augmenting my holiday displays, I use LED lights year-round for themed lighting, kitchen and bedroom accents, and more. You can see videos of these lights in action in this article where I describe the lighting at my home.

Where to find the right LED lights

If you're looking for LEDs that fit some of the criteria, you’re in luck! Here are my recommendations for LED lights and controllers. Here you can find connected and addressable lights that will fit your needs. I also have recommendations for DIY LED and ready-to-go LED kits in the HomeTechHacker Shop.

Best wishes with your holiday display!

By Marlon Buchanan

Despite their central role in our lives, many of us might not be aware of the best practices for charging smartphones. By adopting better charging habits, you can extend your device's battery life and performance. These days this is even more important because smartphones don’t get significantly better with each release anymore. If you can make your phone last, you won’t need to buy another one.

Here are some tips.

1. Avoid Draining Your Battery Completely
One common myth is that you need to let your smartphone's battery drain completely before charging it again. This might have been true for older nickel-based batteries, but modern smartphones use lithium-ion batteries. These batteries actually fare better when you charge them before they drop too low. Try to keep your battery between 20% and 80% to optimize its lifespan and maintain good health.

2. Use the Right Charger and Cable
Favor the charger and cable that come with your device, or those that are certified by the smartphone manufacturer. Cheaper, non-certified chargers can not only damage your phone’s battery but also pose safety risks like overheating. Don’t cut corners with accessories that could compromise your device's functionality, safety, and longevity.

3. Avoid Overheating
Heat is the enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Avoid leaving your smartphone in direct sunlight or in a hot car. Similarly, if you notice that your phone heats up significantly during charging, consider removing the case which might be insulating the heat. Also, give your phone a break during heavy usage if it starts to heat up. Managing device temperature is crucial for maintaining battery health.

4. Charge Smartly with Smart Charging Features
Many modern smartphones come with smart charging features that help manage battery health by controlling how fast and how much the battery charges. Features like optimized battery charging can prolong your battery's lifespan by learning your charging patterns and waiting to finish charging past 80% until you need to use your phone. Dive into your phone's battery settings and activate these features to leverage tech solutions that simplify your life.

5. Disconnect Once Charged
While modern smartphones are designed to prevent overcharging, keeping your phone plugged in at 100% for an extended period can still stress the battery. Once your phone reaches full charge, it's a good practice to disconnect it. This is not only good for the battery’s health but also a safety practice that minimizes unnecessary power consumption.

6. Use Battery Saving Modes Wisely
Battery-saving modes can be lifesavers when you're low on power and far from a charger. However, using them routinely can lead to decreased functionality by limiting background activities that could include important updates or communications. Use these modes judiciously to make the most of your device when you need that extra juice.

By the way, these tips also apply to your laptops and tablets. Make the most of your home tech by keeping these tips in mind for extending the life of your mobile devices.

HomeTechHacker: Tips for Protecting Yourself From Cybercriminals on Social Media

Sunday, October 23, 2022

By Marlon Buchanan

Social media can be great for sharing information, consuming information, and connecting with people, but it’s also a treasure trove of opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit. Here are some of the cybersecurity issues with social media and how you can protect yourself.

Protect Your Identity and Privacy on Social Media

You may have published a lot of information about yourself on social media that can help cybercriminals commit identity theft and fraud.

Have you looked at how much information you share in your profiles? Or the personal details you share in posts and tweets?

In general, to protect yourself from cyberattacks you should refrain from sharing:
  • Your location data (GPS coordinates, IP address, etc.). Make sure the social media service you are using removes location data from pictures that you upload, or remove the location data yourself.
  • Personally identifying information (e.g., your full name with your middle name, your birthday, photos of passports, credit cards, and driver’s licenses).
    • This includes information you might use as the answers to security questions like the name of your first pet, where you were born, your mother’s maiden name, etc.
  • Pictures of the exterior of a new home you just bought. Cybercriminals will use this information in phishing attacks and to try to commit identity fraud.
  • Photos of your young children and grandchildren. Photos, combined with names and other information, can be used to commit identity theft.
    • The problem with identity theft of young children's information is that no one is usually checking their credit record. When those children become adults they may find they already have 10 years of bad credit and banking history that they have to fix.

Now, I know some of this seems drastic. If you are tightly controlling who you share information with, you can share some of these things on social media (like pictures of your children). But if you don’t 100% trust or know everyone you are sharing this information with then you shouldn’t share it, which leads me to my next recommendation.

Don’t “Friend” or “Connect” With People on Social Media That You Don’t Know

Although this advice is most applicable to Facebook and LinkedIn, it more generally applies to other social media networks like Instagram (e.g., who you allow to follow you).

Your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles are a goldmine for identity thieves. One way these fraudsters try to compromise your identity is by getting access to more details about you by becoming part of your social media network.

Beware of Fake Profiles (Impersonation)

Another way scammers attack after friending you is by cloning your account. Once they are your friend, they can use that information to create a profile that looks just like yours, and then use that account to friend people you know, posing as you, in order to get access to your friend’s information, and run scams on them much easier because that friend thinks they are interacting with you.

You could also be the target of someone impersonating someone you know on social media. Make sure you really know who you are conversing and sharing information with. Just because it comes from an account that looks like your friend doesn’t mean it is your friend.

Social media platforms can be great communication tools, but they can also be exploited by cybercriminals. Taking these extra precautions can help you, your friends, and your family stay safe.

The Importance of Data Privacy in Smart Homes: Protecting Your Personal Information

By Marlon Buchanan

Smart home technology has transformed the way we live, providing convenience and efficiency with the integration of connected devices. However, as our homes become more connected, it’s crucial to understand the importance of data privacy.

Safeguarding personal information in smart homes is paramount to prevent potential data breaches and protect our privacy. Let’s discuss the significance of data privacy in smart homes and explore measures to ensure your personal information remains secure.

Data Collection and Storage

Smart home devices are equipped with sensors and cameras that continuously gather data to function effectively. While this data collection enhances the user experience, it also raises concerns about the potential misuse of sensitive information. Information such as daily routines, habits, and even biometric data could be stored in cloud servers or shared with third-party providers. Homeowners need to be aware of what data is being collected, how it is used, and who has access to it to maintain control over their personal information.

Protecting Against Hacking Attempts

As smart home devices are connected to the internet, they become susceptible to hacking attempts and cyber-attacks. A breach in security could grant unauthorized access to personal data or even provide intruders with insights into a household's daily patterns, creating potential safety risks.

To prevent hacking incidents, it is crucial to implement robust security measures such as using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and regularly updating firmware and software. Here are some additional tips for securing your smart home.

The Risk of Data Sharing

Many smart home devices offer additional functionalities through integration with other services or platforms. While this integration enhances user experience, it also raises concerns about data sharing. Homeowners must be vigilant when granting permissions for data sharing, as this could lead to sensitive information being accessed by external entities. Reading privacy policies and opting for devices that prioritize user privacy can help mitigate these risks.

Regular Software Updates

Security vulnerabilities are continually evolving, and software updates play a crucial role in addressing these concerns. Homeowners should regularly update the firmware and software of their smart devices to ensure they are protected against the latest security threats.

Manufacturers that prioritize security should provide frequent updates to address any discovered vulnerabilities promptly. This is something I emphasize in my free home network security course.

As smart homes become an integral part of modern living, ensuring data privacy is of utmost importance. Protecting personal information in smart homes not only prevents potential data breaches and cyber-attacks but also safeguards your privacy and security.

5 Tech Resolutions for the New Year

By Marlon Buchanan

The start of a new year is a perfect time to reflect on how we use technology. For many of us, tech touches almost every part of our lives.

Phones, computers, home Wi-Fi, and voice assistants permeate our everyday activities. Yet we often let these tools run in the background without thinking about how well they are serving us.

If you are setting goals for 2026, consider adding a few technology resolutions to your list. They can make your life safer, more efficient, and a little easier to manage.

1. Strengthen your cybersecurity habits

Begin with simple steps. Update old passwords, turn on two-factor authentication, and make sure your router and smart devices have the latest software. These small habits protect you from the most common online threats. My book, The Personal Cybersecurity Manual, explains how to build strong security routines that fit real life.

2. Explore AI to make life easier

Artificial intelligence can help you brainstorm ideas, organize your schedule, write more clearly, and save time on routine tasks. Commit to learning new AI tools and techniques and apply them to your life in a practical way.

3. Upgrade your smart home wisely

This year, think about adding smart technology that makes sense for your lifestyle. Devices like smart plugs, thermostats, and lighting systems can save energy and improve comfort.

4. Reclaim time with intentional tech use

Technology should help you live better, not busier. Review how you use your devices and find ways to simplify. You can automate small tasks, set reminders that support your goals, or schedule tech-free time to recharge. My book, Life by Design, explores how to use automation and smart tools to create more balance in your day.

5. Learn something new.

Make a goal to learn one new digital skill this year. You could improve your photo editing, explore budgeting apps, or learn how to automate a few household tasks. Small bits of learning build confidence and make technology feel more useful and less frustrating.

You do not need to be a tech expert to get more value from the tools around you. A few small changes can make your technology safer, your home smarter, and your days more productive. Here’s to starting 2026 with simple habits that help technology work for you instead of the other way around.
