North City Walgreens to close Feb 28

North City Walgreens is closing
The Walgreens drug store in the North City business district, at the corner of 15th NE and NE 175th St will close at the end of February.

The store manager has consistently been telling customers that the "landlord is not renewing the lease."

Since Walgreen's owns the building, he is presumably talking about who owns the land.

I have been unable to get a response from Walgreens corporate headquarters with any better information.

The store will close on February 28, 2019.

This Walgreen's location was convenient for the North City residents who live in the many multi-family buildings in the area.

Other area Walgreens are located at:
  • 14352 Lake City Way NE, Seattle 98125
  • 14510 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133
  • 17524 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133

Don"t we suppose there will be another multi story apartment abomination on that corner soon? I'm not opposed to multi-family housing, just the ugly buildings proliferating in Shoreline - is there no one interested in green building? Architectural interest? Amenities? Green space for residents? Permeable surfaces?

It doesn't look like another another high rise apartment. The Shoreline city web site shows a permit for 17518 15th NE was submitted 2/14/2019 for 'Interior work for Vet Clinic' permit #109631. From the permit application contacts list, it appears 'Animal Medical Center of Seattle' intends operate a Veterinary Clinic on the sight.

I just noticed I inserted the number from the wrong line in my previous post. The correct Shoreline permit number for 17518 15th NE is COM19-0317. Please make the correction. The web site for looking it up is https://services.shorelinewa.gov/etrakit/Search/permit.aspx

Permit COM19-0317. Looking through the contacts list 'contact type', it appears Walgreen is abandoning the site and Walgreen and 175th Shoreline Associates (land owner) be renting it to Animal Medical Center of Seattle. Looks like this could be an addition to your report or a new article.

Agreed, the emphasis by city planners to develop every available square inch is regrettable. This is particularly disturbing as Shoreline lags far behind most cities in its access to public green spaces.
