Forest Park IL and Shoreline WA

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

Here's an interesting article, written in 2013, by a man from the Chicago suburbs who dreams of Shoreline.

It’s strange to see the difference in planning between a town like Forest Park and a town like Shoreline just north of Seattle in Washington. (Shoreline Sustainability Page) Forest Park’s 78- page comprehensive plan is a joke compared to Shoreline’s 182-page in-depth Environmental Sustainability Strategy updated in July of 2008 or their 244-page Transportation Master Plan updated in 2011. (Shoreline ESS, 2008) (Shoreline Transit Master Plan)
I was speechless after reading through these two documents and paging through the community’s website. This town has basically created a framework for every municipality to follow in every aspect of sustainability.
Read it here to see how we look from the outside.

Far more important is how Shoreline looks from the inside, up close and personal. Raising the bar for other cities? That might well be a side effect, but should never be the goal of any city. A city exists solely to serve its residents, not some greater good. On that score, the City of Shoreline has a lot to learn.
