Shorewood wrestlers head for sub-regional tournament Feb 7-8

Sunday, February 2, 2014

The Shorewood wrestling team prepares for the Western Conference 3A North/South sub-regional tournament Feb. 7-8 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School after the Thunderbirds finished their dual-meet season with a home senior-night loss to Meadowdale that left Shorewood with a 4-7 record, its first losing record in four years.

It was a rough Senior Night for the Thunderbirds as they lost 48-30 to the Mavericks.

The match started at 195 pounds, and Shorewood quickly fell behind 15-0.

The Mavericks had stretched their lead to 30-12 after eight weight classes.

As he has done all season, senior Matthew Floresca sparked a Shorewood rally, pinning his opponent as the Thunderbirds came back to tie the team score at 30-30.

Meadowdale won the last three matches, all by pin, for the final margin and a 2-2 Wesco 3A record.

It wasn’t all bad for the Shorewood fans. With his pin, Floresca got not only his team-leading 26th victory of the season, but also the 113th win of his career. With this win, against only 9 career losses, Floresca moved past Tim Hestern, class of 2008, for the most wins in school history.
