3A Boys Soccer: Wickstrom scores twice, Shorecrest stops Hazen, 4-1

Sunday, May 19, 2013

Axel Wickstrom, after being cleared to play following an appeal of a suspension, scored twice as the Scots reached the state semifinals.

From our news partner, The Seattle Times

There was plenty of doubt last week for Shorecrest senior midfielder Axel Wickstrom.
He wasn't sure he'd get to play in the Scots' 4-1 triumph over Hazen in the Class 3A boys soccer quarterfinals Saturday at Renton Stadium. Last Wednesday, Wickstrom had drawn a one-match suspension from a red-card ejection in a first-round win over Liberty.
Once he was cleared to play after an appeal, Wickstrom and the Scots left little doubt on the field.

Here’s a story about the Wednesday Shorecrest victory over Liberty from The Seattle Times:

Shorecrest blanks Liberty, 2-0
Corey Stever, a recent call-up from the JV team, had a big assist and goalkeeper Sam Schober notched his eighth shutout as the Scots advanced.
Corey Stever just started to feel like part of the Shorecrest boys’ soccer team.
Stever, a sophomore defender, was called up from the junior varsity six matches ago.
His impact couldn't have been more profound Wednesday night. Stever assisted on the first goal seven minutes into the second half as the road-warrior Scots eliminated Liberty 2-0 in the first round of the Class 3A state boys soccer tournament at Liberty High School.
Goalkeeper Sam Schober registered his eighth shutout of the season for the Scots, who were third in the WesCo 3A South Division in the regular season.
Shorecrest junior Chris Iacolucci corralled a bouncing ball from about 13 yards away and volleyed home a left-footed shot for a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute. The Scots have 12 shutouts.
Shorecrest played a man down from the 51st minute on as Wickstrom was sent off with a red card for maliciously stepping on Liberty's Tyler Jensen. Wickstrom was hit with the ejection for what the head referee Frank Jaramillo termed "serious foul play," and that will likely lead to at least a one-match suspension for Wickstrom.
