Shoreline Community College receives Sodexo Foundation Grant to fight childhood hunger on Global Youth Service Day 2013

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Shoreline Community College (SCC), has been awarded a Sodexo Foundation Youth Grant to support the school in leading a community service project that addresses the issue of childhood hunger. Service activities will take place on Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28, 2013, an international service event celebrating the contributions of children and youth.

Shoreline CC’s project will:
  1. conduct a campus-wide food drive to benefit local families;
  2. sponsor a student service day of volunteering;
  3. sponsor a Hunger Awareness Campaign Global Youth Service Day event on the SCC campus on April 26. This event includes a community conversation surrounding hunger awareness and a healthy meal option by the Deep Roots Kitchen Project (DRKP), a Shoreline CC student program that promotes healthy eating and good nutrition. Additionally, there will be student poster session that highlights hunger awareness and nutrition.
The Hunger Awareness Campaign has three goals: to increase awareness of hunger issues in our community, provide education to promote healthy eating and good nutrition, and provide supplemental food for those in immediate need in the community.

Shoreline CC volunteers will be situated at three area grocery store locations (listed below) and need campus and community volunteers for two available shifts (10:00am – 1:00pm, 12:30-3:30pm). All food donations and proceeds will directly benefit Hopelink, Greenwood Food Bank, and North Helpline. Interested parties can sign up online.

In addition to Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants, Sodexo Foundation has partnered with YSA to support local organizations and educators in service and service-learning projects that engage young people in the fight against childhood hunger in America.

Celebrating 25 years of youth changing the world, YSA (Youth Service America) improves communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people serving in substantive roles. Sodexo Inc. and Sodexo Foundation work to help end hunger in the United States.
