Toy Rabbit scam ... bad bunnies

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

There are a couple of scammers working their way into Shoreline. They come to your door with stuffed animals and tell some sad story about a dying child and try to sell you a stuffed animal for $10 to help raise money for medical bills.

Or their car just ran out of gas and they need a couple of bucks just to get home.

Here's a full story from a Seattle PI blog. The cop they quote has good advice about opening the door to strangers. "Good manners" in opening the door or safety in keeping it closed and yelling through it - take your pick.

The rest of the story...

I saw this article and it made me shake all over again. A man came running up to my daughter and I at night as we were getting out of the car in my driveway. He was yelling "Neighbor! Neighbor! I'm a neighbor!!" I couldn't see him clearly so I waited thinking he was a neighbor, but he wasn't. It was just as the article reported; he talked about a baby falling from a 3rd floor window and asked for a donation of $10 for a stuffed bunny. At the time I was pretty sure it was a scam.
Only a couple of days later, another man came up to my son and I as we were getting out of the car at night. He stated he was deaf, handed me a flier, and asked for a donation. Once again I declined. I was later told that this also was a scam.
Both times were very frightening with strangers running up to my children and I at night. It's just wrong.
