The Million Step Challenge is a free, month-long event that invites people of all ages and abilities to walk as much as they can during the month of May in the name of health, fitness and friendly competition.

Participants compete against each other for prizes, as well as working together to reach the community goal of 5 million steps walked in one month’s time.

New for 2017, the Million Step Challenge is expanding to allow participants to walk anywhere they want and log their totals in several new ways.

Using the online step tracker found on the webpage, walkers can log either their steps from a pedometer, miles, or their laps walked at Paramount School Park.

There is no need to sign up and participants without internet access can log their totals on a paper version of the step tracker located at Paramount School Park (155th St and 8th Ave NE).

Totals are posted online revealing who the current top steppers are and how far we are in reaching our 5 million step goal.

The Million Step Challenge is produced in partnership between the City of Shoreline and the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association. Many thanks to local business prize sponsors Fire and Earth Kitchen, North City Water District, and Immediate Clinic.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Learning to Swear in America

Learning to Swear in America
by Katie Kennedy

Apparently, it's difficult to calculate how much stuff from space lands on Earth in an average year. But in Learning to Swear in America, there's only one object that anybody worries about.

Asteroid BR1019 is a big one. Not kill-the-dinosaurs big, (probably), but destroy-the-West-Coast-of-America big (possibly). That's why NASA has borrowed Russian teen physics prodigy Yuri Strelnikov: in the hope that Yuri can save California with math.

Yuri's research in antimatter will win the next Nobel Prize (presumably), but he is still a seventeen-year-old boy and the NASA scientists are disinclined to listen to him. That's enough to drive Yuri to use obscenities, if only he knew how.

With help from hippie-girl Dovie (who declines his offer of quick sex before the world goes cold) and her brother Lennon (who sees the world clearly from his seat in a wheelchair), Yuri learns how to swear.

And then, Yuri (maybe) has a chance to save the world (or at least, California).

Highly recommended for readers ages 14 to adult. An excellent pair for The Martian by Andy Weir with (significantly) fewer cuss words.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern

The Producers is based around the character of Max Bialystock, a down and out Broadway producer whose latest work flopped on opening night. Max, plagued by his former success and scrabbling to stay afloat, experiences a change in fortune when downtrodden accountant, Leo Bloom, discovers there is money to be made in Max’s theatrical failure.

As a result, the two formerly defeated businessmen form an unlikely union with the goal of creating the world’s worst musical. The plot develops as the duo enlists the help of ridiculous and often farcical characters on the way, such as former Nazi and on-going Third Reich enthusiast Franz Liebkind, Ulla, the blonde bombshell secretary and the flamboyant homosexual director Roger De Bris.

As a result of the characters combined brainpower and ludicrous behavior Spring Time for Hitler is born in Broadway.

Spartan Gym evacuated after gas leak

The Spartan Recreation Center closed Monday after a gas leak was discovered.

The fire department evacuated the gym facility while the leak was stopped, but there are some repairs that need to occur before the full heating system can be turned back on.

The fire department cleared the Center to reopen after about an hour. However, there is currently no heat in the locker rooms, the Olympic and Cascade rooms, and the lobby.

The rest of the building has heat and there is hot water. City staff are working diligently with the School District to get heat to the entire building as soon as possible.

They were talking to repair vendors on Tuesday to get an estimate on when the equipment would be fixed and the full facility would have heat.

This past week, 18 Shorecrest and Shorewood High School DECA students were among over 19,000 students from around the world to participate in the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, CA.

The conference featured the top DECA students from each state and international chapter. To qualify to attend the ICDC, the 18 Shoreline students first had to earn high placing at the state competition, which occurred in early March.

Facing off against the world’s best, the Shoreline students rose to the occasion and proved they were there for a reason. In addition to strong showings from all of the Shoreline students who competed, four Shorewood students were among the Top 10 Overall Finalists and another three were selected as Sub-Category Finalists for their projects.

Seattle Light finishes restringing electrical wires across freeway at 125th

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

The electrical lines were across all lanes of I-5 on Apr 22
Seattle City Light crews worked all night Thursday the 28th and into the morning of Friday the 29th to finish restringing electrical wires pulled down across Interstate 5 by April 22nd's car/pole collision at NE 125th Street.

To complete the work safely, crews had to intermittently stop traffic in both directions of I-5 between State Route 520 and NE 205th Street as crews pulled power lines across I-5.

Washington State Patrol troopers assisted with traffic control.

On April 22, a male driver was travelling northbound on 5th Ave NE when he attempted to turn eastbound on NE 125th. The driver made an extremely wide turn and collided with the stabilizing wire attached to a power pole. The driver was not injured but the impact of the collision broke the pole in half.

The power lines attached to the pole run across both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5. The energized power lines fell across both lanes of I-5, causing the shutdown of the freeway.

Crews worked all day and night to remove the lines and restore power to the surrounding area.

We will also have some very special celebrity guests at the show this year! Oskar the Blind Cat and his buddy, Klaus, will be back at the show with some of their awesome cat toys and other goodies. Over in the Seattle Persian and Himalayan Rescue Kissing Booth, internet celebrity kitties Brimley (America’s Next Cat Star), will be raising money for their homeless Persian friends.

Shoreline Athletic Director Don Dalziel was has been selected as the Co-Athletic Director of the Year by the Washington Secondary School Athletic Administrators Association (WSSAAA). Dalziel and co-winner Scott Nordi of Lakes High School in Lakewood were presented with their awards at the WSSAAA’s annual conference in Spokane on April 26.

Humbled by the honor and quick to shine the spotlight on others, Dalziel accepted the prestigious honor on behalf of his Shoreline staff, coaches, student athletes and peers from across the region.

“This is about the great team I am fortunate to work with,” said Dalziel. “Our Coaches and student athletes always do an outstanding job of representing Shoreline … I am the lucky one to get to work with all of them.”

Dalziel was nominated for the award by a number of his peers from across the state. “Don is a well-respected athletic director who is often the person whom others turn to for advice and guidance,” said Brian Smith, assistant director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). “His input to me and the WIAA staff is always a representation of his values as well as what’s best for kids.”

“Our schools and community are fortunate to have someone like Don supporting the success of our student athletes in their sports and in their classrooms,” said Superintendent Rebecca Miner.
“He’s helped create a culture focused on using sports to develop character and commitment to individual and team successes in sports and life.”

Dalziel began his teaching and coaching career in Shoreline in 1991 and has served as the district’s athletic director since 2004.

Limited number of City Hall plantings available to residents Saturday, May 6

Construction of the new police station will soon begin at City Hall. In preparation, the City needs to remove the vegetation planted on the east side of the building and around the former Grease Monkey building.

On Saturday, May 6 from 8:00 to 11:00am, the City invites Shoreline residents to come take the remaining plants for repurposing.

A limited number of plants will be available on a first come first serve basis. Plants may not be resold.

Available plants include:
  • 3 Acer Circinatum (vine maple) – 6 to 10 feet in height
  • Numerous Rhododendron (Irene Koster) – 2 gallon size
  • Numerous Vacinium Ovatum (Evergreen Huckleberry) – 2 gallon size

Residents will need to bring their own tools and vehicles to move the plants; however, City Parks staff will be on hand to help with removal.

On April 21, volunteers from the Washington Native Plant Society removed a number of the plants to replant throughout Shoreline’s park system.

38th Annual Shoreline Track and Field Invite Saturday, April 29th

DEDICATION

This year we are very pleased to honor Steve Pouley and Frank Workman with the 2017 Shoreline Track and Field Invitational Dedication.

We are fortunate in the Shoreline School District to have two outstanding, dedicated announcers working at our stadium and at Shorecrest & Shorewood for athletic events. Steve and Frank have been the voices heard since 2004. They are a large reason that Shoreline is able to host events each year and especially are part of the success of this track meet.

Steve and Frank are also a part of the larger Shoreline school community. They both have filled the role of paraeducator at Shorewood and Shorecrest for several years. This has provided them the opportunity to get to know students in the classroom as well as on the field. In addition, both Steve and Frank are proud fathers of sons graduating from Shorecrest High School.

As Steve moves on in his retirement and Frank moves to San Diego, please join us as we say thank you Steve and Frank for your years of commitment to Shoreline and your dedication to the student athletes that are fortunate to work with you.

King County Library System names interim director

Stephen A. Smith
Interim KCLS Director
The King County Library System (KCLS) Board of Trustees has appointed a KCLS Foundation board member as interim director of the library system, effective immediately, following the March 29 resignation of former Director Gary Wasdin.

Stephen A. Smith has served on the KCLS Foundation board since 2011, the year he retired from full-time practice as a partner at K&L Gates. Mr. Smith has focused on matters related to free speech, and he has a particular passion for the role that public libraries play in enabling educated participants in democratic society.

“We are fortunate to have such an accomplished, passionate and dedicated scholar at the helm as we begin a nationwide search for a new director,” said Jim Wigfall, KCLS Board President. “Steve Smith brings tremendous integrity to the role, along with deep knowledge of our library system. He has been a tireless supporter of both KCLS and the values that define it.”

Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1972. He was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar at the Columbia University School of Law, and he received his law degree there in 1975. He lives on Mercer Island with his family.

“It’s an honor to help lead this outstanding organization,” Mr. Smith said. “I love libraries and support strongly the essential services they provide to our community. My career involved the protection of freedom of speech, press and information access and I look forward to assisting our public libraries in supporting those liberties for everyone.”

The Board of Trustees is finalizing its process for filling the director position, and expects the effort to take several months.

Shoreline Communities Rising (CR) group will hear about cultural diversity and inclusion in Shoreline

Monday, May 1, 2017

Shoreline Communities Rising! is a non-partisan neighborhood action group, with a stated mission of “Bringing people together to make a difference.”

The Shoreline Communities Rising (CR) group will meet at the Shoreline Senior Center from 12:00 to 2:00pm on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

The Center is at 18560 1st Ave NE, the southernmost building on the Shoreline Center campus.

This month our featured speaker will be Suni Tolton.  Suni has oversight for cultural diversity and inclusion for the City of Shoreline. The goal of this department is to expand the city's capacity to support and engage all members of our community. She works with Rob Beem, Human Services Manager for the City of Shoreline, who gave an overview at last month’s meeting of what is happening here in Shoreline, and the ways and places that we might become involved with our community.

Also, as a tangible part of what we can do for our community, we want to respond to a request from the Shoreline School District for a very specific kind of support:

Lake Forest Park Elementary is collecting body wash and body soaps during the month of May for The Works to help families and students in need within the SSD. We are asking our CR members (via Facebook and email) to bring these products as a donation to our May meeting:

Meeting the needs of our community is and will continue to be seen as an on-going process requiring curiosity, clarity of vision, and follow-through on our best intentions. CR! can now be found on FaceBook at our new and still-evolving page.

Gina Holt (Clayworks)

I have been working in clay since 1991 from my home studio in Bothell. I've explored various mediums and find that none compare to the flexibility and feel of clay.

The versatility of clay allows me to draw, carve, and paint with such a range of expression. I find this to be both satisfying and endlessly intriguing.

As a Master Gardener, I have always loved the inherent beauty of plants in the northwest. My garden is filled with my favorite plants both native and ornamental, with a special passion for ferns.

Through my pottery, I can preserve the beauty of plants by making botanical impressions in the clay. Since creating my jewelry and other projects, I now look at plants with a more appreciative eye, seeing more closely the exquisite design of each leaf and flower.

"Mpressions by Nature" is aptly named: I make the impressions but Nature is the true artist.

Turnip by Marjorie Thompson

Marjorie Thompson (Encaustic)

Marjorie Thompson, a local Seattle artist, has been painting with encaustic (hot beeswax) since 2010. Her use of encaustic wax and its luminous quality creates a way to express the layers and depth of nature itself. Her paintings are intended to create a mindful awareness of nature on a different scale and in a different way.

Thompson's new works, ESSENCE, capture the abstract quality of the edible garden. The delicate layers of wax, ink and oil paint provide an opportunity to look deeper into the beauty of our bountiful gardens.

Photo: Weeding the Densmore Pathway

ELNA volunteers really get into their work

Twenty-eight Echo Lake Neighbors came to work on the Densmore Pathway on Earth Day, April 29, 2017. They pulled weeds, pruned, mulched, and according to organizer Marla Tullio, really got a lot of work done.

The Pathway is a trail that runs between Densmore and Ashworth at N 188th. Before the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association took it over, it was filled with blackberry vines, ivy, weeds, and garbage.

Now it's a pleasant small park where people walk.

It does take a lot of people to maintain it - if you are interested in helping, contact ELNA.

Legislator looks to extended special session

Evan Smith
By Evan Smith

Democratic State Rep. Ruth Kagi anticipates that the legislature may need to work beyond the scheduled 30-day special session that started last week.

Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee called the legislature into special session after the Republican-controlled State Senate and Democratic-controlled House of Representatives couldn't agree, during the 105-day regular session that ended April 23, on a two-year state budget, including how to pay for full state financial support for basic public education as ordered by the State Supreme Court, and what taxes will be required.

Kagi said April 22 that "sadly" the legislature may need more than one special session to complete its work.

Kagi was in the legislature two years ago when legislators went into a third special session, finally completing a budget just before the June 30 deadline to avoid a state-government shutdown and working into July to pass bills needed to implement that budget.

When this year's special session started April 24, Kagi said that this year's session could bring a repeat of that.

Kagi represents the 32nd Legislative District, including the city of Shoreline and part of northwest Seattle, Lynnwood, parts of Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, along with Woodway and nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County.

She is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, chairwoman of the House committee on early learning and social services and a member of the House Environment Committee.
