October proclaimed Disability Awareness Month by Shoreline City Council

The Shoreline City Council proclaimed October as Disability Awareness Month and the Overcoming Barriers to Employment for People with Disabilities event that is provided through a sponsorship of the Shoreline Community College, Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The Northshore/Shoreline Community Network was cited in the proclamation and accepted the certificate from Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan.

Network members in attendance were:
  • Kim Thompson, Associate Dean of Student Services
  • Daryl  Campbell, Shoreline Community College Interim President
  • Mark McVeety, President of the Shoreline Community College Foundation, Professor at Shoreline Community College, Director of the organization that partners with the City of Shoreline to provide the Quick Start Shoreline program for local Business owners each week.
  • Jamie Schecter and Trey Baughman, 2 AmeriCorps Vista members that provided one of the workshops titled, "Volunteering as a Pre Employment opportunity".
  • Angela Hughes, Program Coordinator for Services for Students with disabilities
  • Sunny Rivera, Vocational Rehabilities Supervisor for DVR North office is a crucial partner for this event, but she was not able to attend the presentation.
Shoreline Community College included an article in their Community Report on the "Overcoming Barriers" event.

What is revealing is that you believe disabled people only come in wheelchairs or with a cane. You make an assumption about what you see and that is the biggest barrier people with disabilities face. The vast majority of people with disabilities have invisible disabilities.

Is Daryl Campbell the SCC President or the Interim? I wasn't aware they were done with their search for a new President.
