Janet Way
From the Janet Way Campaign

Former Shoreline City Councilmember Janet Way has announced plans to file for Position #4, a seat now held by Doris McConnell. She served on the council from ’05-’09.

While on the Council, she spearheaded many efforts to promote sustainability and environmental protection, including the effort to save South Woods from development and helped form the Lake Ballinger Forum to address flooding issues. She advocated for a “smarter Aurora Phase II”, to include an array of stormwater protections to exceed State requirements.

Since her term on the council, she founded the Shoreline Preservation Society to advocate for “Places That Matter”, such as historically significant sites around the proposed Town Center. She publishes a popular Blog called Of Paramount Importance named after her local park.

She has been a member of the Shoreline Solar Project, Shoreline Chamber, Sierra Club, Seattle Audubon and now the Steering Committee for Sustainable Works, a non-profit promoting “Energy Audits” encouraging conservation retrofits. She’s also an Advisory Board member of Friends of Fircrest. She’s long championed urban watersheds and wildlife habitat, particularly Thornton Creek, for urban forests, healthy parks and neighborhoods.

Stating that, “I believe local government is one of the best ways to have an impact and serve the community. There are so many innovative ideas we can employ to improve our community, and I want to serve on the Council to help shape policies addressing the challenges we face with our economy, environment, transportation that are neighborhood friendly and can help our families succeed. We need to do everything we can to help create family wage jobs, foster our educational assets and protect the most vulnerable citizens, such as residents of Fircrest and other special needs communities. And, we can create a sustainable future while honoring our heritage.”

She pledges to work for transparency in government policies and to work for meaningful public involvement and participation. As a Shoreline resident with her husband for 23 years, they raised two sons attending Shoreline Schools. She runs a small, commercial arts business for over 30 years and is a sales rep for an artisan cheesemaker at local Farmers Markets.

Heaven forbid! Once was more than enough.

Janet Way was an obstructionist during her first term on the Council. There is a reason that she lost. Although she claims to be an environmentalist, she supported a 4-lane version of 15th Ave NE (over a redesigned road diet that included bike lanes) and also supported doing away cottage housing, a sustainable land use alternative, while on the Council. She is not an environmentalist, just a populist who is not an effective leader. I strongly suggest that you do not vote for Janet Way. It is a step in the wrong direction for Shoreline.

Fact Check: 1. The 4-lane version of 15th was a decision made prior to Jane Way taking office on the City Council in '05.

2. There are acceptable cottage housing developments here in Shoreline but there are also inappropriate examples of "cottage blight" which were wedged into inappropriate areas without proper process.

3. Janet Way is an environmental champion and believes in transparent and accountable government and will show up for work, informed and eager to serve all the people.

Lets have accurate facts in these comments.

She sure will show up - even to illegal meetings to underhandedly oust the city manager behind other council members backs. I don't know if I'd call that informed or serving the people but it certainly did try to serve someone.

Many of the things the current City Council likes to take credit for are the result of Janet's leadership that are only now being realized. Things like the hybrid plan for the second mile of Aurora incorporating rain gardens, and Sylva cells to support and maintain healthy street trees (rather than dead ones that are either abandoned or require re-planting). The Sustainability Strategy is another effort she was instrumental in getting established; it is now guiding the updates to many City-wide policies that are making Shoreline a better place to live.

Not many folks are willing to serve on city councils for such a small stipend they get and actually work like the dickens to take the risks needed to make way for significant healthy social and eco progress for Shoreline- but, Janet does. Without Janet, the Shoreline council hasn't been making much progress except for finishing/continuing what Janet played major roles in starting. It's time we got her back on board to get some substantive action going again. If you have a track record showing that you can come anywhere close to matching Janet's ability to head Shoreline in sustainable directions, by all means, run for this election.

Actually, there are seven excellent people on the council right now who work extremely hard and are much more effective.

There are a couple good people on the council right now, but two does not a majority make. Consequently, the tree ordinance proposition that was developed over a two year period with the help of the community was not approved by council. The ordinance if passed would have provided staff with the tools they need to protect the tree canopy without preventing the removal of trees where appropriate.
This is just one issue but a good example of an area where Janet's expertise could have made a difference.

Actually, there are SEVEN excellent people on the council right now.

They are the seven dwarfs!
Do nothing, say nothing of importance, getting nothing done, weak, ineffectual, and boring.

Bring back people who care!

Oh yeah! I forgot LAME!
That's seven.
And they aren't cute as the Disney one's either.

PLEASE...not again!

Anon @ 4:15,

Quick question. What is your definition of excellent?

Because if McConnell is your concept of "excellent", then you have very low standards. Don't you think councilmembers should show up, read the material and have a coherent thought to convey and maybe one single idea to propose? She doesn't.

Anonymous,  June 2, 2011 at 12:11 PM

Well, Anon @ 11:15, your concept of excellent must be to show up, shuffle papers, ask questions, ask those questions again, stall decisions, ask those same questions yet again, shuffle papers...

All of you folks debating Doris vs. Janet seem to miss this point - it leaves the average voter with little to chose from, both are bad choices.

With the swill called Shoreline city council politics, who would want to run?

I personally will write in the name of my dog.

So, what has Doris done on the council except show up to SOME of the council meetings? I don't get why she is there except to vote FOR anything the schools and any other power player may prefer- whether or not it's the best and most well thought out option for the community AND the students.

@10:23am-second from top

We all need effective obstruction to what is more harmful than helpful to a community.
