CleanScapes Tips: Lose Paper Weight in 2011

Monday, January 3, 2011

The New Year is here with many opportunities to lose weight. Paper weight, that is.
You have a choice when it comes to how much junk mail, credit card offers, catalogs and phone books arrive at your home and workplace.

Help your recycling can shed some pounds in the New Year by opting-out of phone books and taking your name off catalog and junk mail distribution lists.

The Big Picture

The average adult receives 41 pounds of junk mail each year.

Nationwide, over 100 billion pieces of junk mail are sent each year – about 30% of all the mail delivered in the world

Annual junk mail production uses 100 million trees  –  the equivalent of deforesting the entire Rocky Mountain National Park every four months

Every year, the production and disposal of junk mail consumes more energy than 3 million cars.

CleanScapes has the waste collection contract with the City of Shoreline.  CleanScapes focuses on keeping waste out of landfills and provides regular tips on waste reduction.  CleanScapes is currently running a neighborhood waste reduction contest in Shoreline, with a $10,000 prize for the winning neighborhood.
