Who knew the Vikings made it to Green Lake?

Probably the goofiest Seafair event has always been the Milk Carton Derby.

Rumored to be seaworthy

Since 1972, this quirky celebration of creativity and boatmanship features nearly 100 colorful milk carton boats of all shapes and design. Children, adults, families and businesses build milk carton watercraft and compete on the waters of Green Lake for prizes and bragging rights.

Usually about half of them break apart and sink, but they just have to stay afloat long enough to be judged.

The goal is to stay afloat - at least for a while

The police keep a watchful eye on the contestants in case they have to fish them out of the water.

On the shore, onlookers cheer on the contestants.

Commercial entry

The event is sponsored by Safeway, Albertsons, Lucerne, Boeing, Hyperlite, Starbucks, Alaska Airlines, Albert Lee, Oracle, and Busby Junk Removal.

It was held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Green Lake in north Seattle.
