Living with cancer, managing diabetes - classes at Swedish Edmonds in August

Just north of us on SR 99, the Swedish Edmonds hospital offers a large variety of classes that are open to the public. Many are free, others are low cost. Details of some of their disease coping and management classes are below. Register online unless indicated otherwise.

Prediabetes – Mornings
This class will explain risk factors and how to lower your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by up to 60 percent through dietary and lifestyle changes. Participants are welcome to bring a support person to the class for no additional charge. Pre-registration is required.

When: Tuesday, Aug. 18 from 9:30 a.m.-noon
Cost: $35 per person/includes a support person.

Diabetes Class Series
This is a series of four classes taught by certified diabetes educators with the goal of helping you become independent in the daily management of diabetes. Topics include self-glucose monitoring, nutrition and meal planning, exercise, medication management and strategies for living a healthy lifestyle. A physician referral is required. Many insurances, including Medicare, will pay for the cost of the classes. Registration required.

Living With Cancer Support Group 
People living with cancer are invited to explore life after a cancer diagnosis in a safe and supportive environment. Learn from educational presentations and open discussion, while considering what this journey looks like for you. 
Where: Swedish Edmonds-Radiation Oncology Building

When: First and third Wednesday of each month, Aug. 5 and 19 from 1-2:30p.m. 
Cost: Free

Active Women, Healthy Women
From cancer patient to survivor, there is an exercise activity appropriate for you. The class is co-sponsored by Team Survivor Northwest and focuses on stretching, strength training and cardio workouts. Registration required.

Look Good, Feel Better 
This American Cancer Society class focuses on skincare, cosmetics, hair care and hair loss and is designed for women undergoing cancer treatment. Registration required.

Knit for Life
This network of volunteers uses knitting as a healing experience to enhance the lives of cancer patients, their family members and caregivers during treatment and recovery. It provides a supportive environment for beginners and experienced knitters. All materials are provided.
