Bob Phelps, K7UW

Shoreline community volunteer Robert "Bob" Phelps, K7UW, died on Friday, January 4, 2013.

A long-time volunteer in the community, Bob was instrumental in setting up the the ACS team, the Shoreline Auxiliary Communications Service. This group of "ham radio" operators works closely with the Shoreline Fire Department and the City of Shoreline Emergency Management department.

Bob knew that in time of disaster, the only reliable communication would be ham radio operators. Working with a group of volunteers, and partnering with the City of Shoreline, they acquired a van and equipped it with half a dozen types of radio communication.

Bob worked on Disaster Preparedness and was a speaker from the ACS to the community, helping to educate local groups.

From a letter to Bob from Shoreline Fire Chief Mark Bunje and City of Shoreline EOS Gail Harris:

On behalf of the Shoreline Fire Department and the City of Shoreline, I would like to thank Bob Phelps for his many years of volunteer service and assistance with Disaster Preparedness, Amateur Radio Operations and for supporting the Fire Department's mission with his intelligence, experience, and skill.
Bob's dedication and spirit of adventure set an example for the entire community on how a citizen can be of service to fire and life safety responders. His long-time commitment to the Shoreline ACS will never be forgotten, and his tireless efforts to integrate new technology are treasured and appreciated.
Bob achieved more in "retirement" than many of us accomplish during our working careers.

This is very sad news. Bob was a leader, a mentor, and a good friend. I will miss him. KF7NFE
