Carnegie Medal awarded posthumously to hero with Shoreline roots

The late Philip Scholz, who was raised in Shoreline and was a 1997 graduate of Shorewood High School, was recently awarded the Carnegie Medal.

The medal is awarded by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission which was established in 1904 by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The award has been given approximately 9,800 times in the last 111 years. Approximately 20% of the awards are given posthumously, as it was in Scholz's case. See our previous article

The award was established to recognize civilians who voluntarily put their own life at extraordinary risk in an attempt to save another person. Scholz's act of heroism took place in Santa Clara, California on January 20, 2014.  Read the Carnegie award info here 

After his passing, Scholz's widow Emily established a foundation in his memory.  The foundation carries on work that was important to Phil during his life. The monetary portion of the Carnegie award was given to the foundation.
