Shoreline’s Million Step challenge starts in September

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

Shoreline’s annual Million Step Challenge begins in September. The Million Step Challenge is a free month-long event that invites people of all ages and abilities to walk as much as they can during the month of September in the name of health, fitness, and friendly competition.

Participants compete against each other for prizes, as well as, competing for their Shoreline neighborhood. At the end of the challenge, awards will be given to top steppers and a trophy will be presented to the neighborhood that walked the most.

The event started in 2014 in the Ridgecrest neighborhood. It has now expanded to include the entire city.

New for 2019, the Million Step Challenge has added a series of group walks on Monday evenings at Paramount School Park to allow participants a chance to get to know one other while logging their steps for the challenge.

Continuing for 2019, the City will track how many total steps each of Shoreline’s 14 neighborhoods have walked and award a trophy to the winning neighborhood. The Ridgecrest neighborhood will be defending their title for 2019.

There is no need to sign up or register for the Million Step Challenge. Participants can simply log their totals in the online “Step Tracker”. Participants without internet access can log their totals on a paper step tracker located at Paramount School Park 155th St and 8th Ave NE). Totals will be updated regularly at shorelinewa.gov/steps revealing who the current top steppers are.

The Million Step Challenge is produced in partnership between the City and the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association. Many thanks to North City Water District for sponsoring prizes for the event.
