The first-ever girls' hockey league in Washington State, the Western Washington Female Hockey League (WWFHL), started last weekend at Highland Ice Arena with a resounding success.

Players from the Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) at the 8U, 10U and 12U/14U age brackets took the ice with pride in their new league jerseys bearing the Washington Wild team's crest, league emblem, and the association's 15th anniversary patch on their sleeves.

Games were tight, fast paced, and competitive, with several ending in tie games. Most importantly, Highland Ice Arena was invaded by smiling female hockey players from the early morning to the early afternoon, happy to play the game they love. The inaugural girls' hockey league spans from October through March.

The Western Washington Female Hockey Association is the only girls' hockey association in the state and its mission is to empower girls through the sport of ice hockey so that they may reach their goals and dreams on and off the ice.
