When you drive into the upper section of Shoreline Place, next to Town & Country Market the Sears building looks pretty much the same.
Aerial views and the back side of the building show a different story.
The final days of the former Sears building in Shoreline are approaching.
The 1967 building is close to being fully demolished, making way for new residential, retail and public open spaces.
When it is gone and replaced with new buildings, will anyone remember or care? Several generations back the Sears catalog was ubiquitous in the western United States. People bought everything from the Sears catalog including houses which were shipped in pieces on the railroad.
I own a beautiful two piece roll top desk (a secretary/china closet) which my great-grandfather bought from the 1910 Sears catalog and had shipped to Washington.
Sears catalogs were used as toilet paper and featured in jokes for many years as a symbol of rural life.
