For the 2026 Mountlake Terrace Hawks, duplicating a perfect run through the Wesco League South Conference — as the team had done last season — didn’t seem out of the question. The team is loaded with key returnees from the 2025 squad and this year’s group had racked up 107 points in their first three outings, averaging almost 38 points per game during their 3-0 start.
But Hawk hopes for going undefeated in league conference play this year were dashed on Friday — and dashed convincingly by a stout Shorewood Stormrays squad.
The Stormrays ran through, around and over the Hawks, notching a 27-0 win at Shoreline Stadium in the Wesco League South Conference opener for both teams.
The loss was the worst for the Hawks since a 40-0 thumping by Sedro-Woolley on Nov. 1, 2024.
Shorewood dominated on the scoreboard and on the stat sheet, running up nearly 300 yards in total offense while holding Terrace to 180 total yards. The Stormrays tallied 21 first downs in the game to the Hawks’ 10.
“It was a weird night; weird things happening all over the place,” said Terrace Coach Archie Malloy.
Shorewood’s final score of the game came early in the fourth quarter on a Woodruff 3-yard TD run. The two alternating quarterback system employed by the Stormrays was effective as Woodruff and Vanee played a part in all four Shorewood scores — Woodruff with two touchdown runs and a TD pass completion, and Vanee with a TD toss.
For the Hawks, the loss was the first in Wesco League South Conference play since Oct. 4, 2024 — a 48-7 defeat to Monroe — and a reminder that the conference can still be a challenge, Malloy noted.
“It’s Wesco South football; everyone in this league is tough,” he said. “We don’t doubt anybody and we never underestimate anybody. (Shorewood’s a) big, tough, physical team. You know what, you tip your hat to them and you go back to the drawing board.”
Mountlake Terrace (0-1 in 3A Wesco League South Conference play, 3-1 overall) will head back to Shoreline Stadium for their next game, a Friday, Oct. 1 matchup against the surprising Shorecrest Scots. The Scots have opened their season 3-1 overall, 1-0 in Wesco League South Conference play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Shorewood (1-0 in 3A Wesco League South Conference play, 3-1 overall) will face the undefeated Meadowdale Mavericks in their next action in a game for at least a share of first place in the conference standings. The Stormrays and Mavericks will meet at Edmonds Stadium on Friday, kicking off at 8 p.m.
