Letter to the Editor: Prop 1 is about far more than a swimming pool

To the Editor:

I am writing to encourage folks in Shoreline to vote in the upcoming election Tuesday, November 5 and beyond that to please vote for our new Parks, Pool and Recreation Center. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to make our city the friendly and viable place we all desire.

Prop 1 is about far more than a swimming pool. It is also about several other amenities that are really needed in Shoreline. One thing I am excited about is the indoor walking track around the perimeter of the double gymnasium. Many of us, over the years, have gone to the malls for the walking exercise we need and desire. Now malls are changing drastically and even disappearing so an indoor walking track will be even more necessary. Many of our citizens need a safe, indoor place to do their walking.

I hope you will consider this measure carefully and realize the many benefits it will have for our beautiful city. Please vote YES on Prop 1!

  1. So, I need to pay $400 more a year so you can walk inside? Go to Home Depot if you want to walk inside. This pool and facility is not needed. You all think everyone in Shoreline is wealthy. We're not. I'm trying to live within my means, pay for my kid's college, help my elderly parents pay their bills, and save money somehow for me. Every new program is free for the poor and it doesn't impact the wealthy. Not only will I have to pay for construction, I will still have to pay to use it. $20 says city employees get free admission, even if they're not Shoreline residents. ENOUGH!

  2. There are plenty of local indoor places to walk other than malls, including grocery stores. I can't afford $400 more a year to my property taxes for this. What about the next thing the city wants to build? There is not an unlimited amount of money in taxpayer pockets. This is so selfish and unneeded.

  3. The walking track is just one benefit of the proposed Aquatic Recreation and Community Center. I wouldn't pay $240 a year for just a walking track! There's also 2 pools, exercise equipment, space prioritized for seniors, a commercial kitchen and meeting rooms. But more important than any of these amenities is a chance for Shoreline to create a community space where young and old can be together. People have become increasingly isolated In this digital age. This space can be the place that encourages a healthy lifestyle, physically and emotionally through friendship and shared interests. I support Proposition 1 for today and for the future of our community.

  4. Joan, there is a A LOT of speculation as to what you hope this new space can provide. But it is simply way too expensive for too little. I'm in my late 30s, saved for 15 years to afford a down payment for my home, and my property taxes have doubled in the last few years. This is simply too much to benefit too few, and I will be required to pay entrance fees to use the pool while I am paying for it with my property taxes already, no thank you. The city council should have implemented a fee for new development to 100% fund these new facilities. Our city has the land that developers want to build on, we can make the rules around what they have to pay in order to build.
