Drawing in Silverpoint with Susan Jones

In Medieval and Renaissance times, before graphite (“lead”) pencils were available, artists such as Leonardo da Vinci used a piece of silver to sketch in their design for a painting on a canvas or create drawings on prepared papers. Today, you learn to draw with a sterling silver to create distinctive soft marks that warm and darken over time, creating a nature drawing that develops a beautiful patina with age.

About the Instructor: Susan Jones is a Natural Science illustrator and instructor of botanical illustration at the University of Washington Extension Program.

Tuesday, September 23 or Wednesday, September 24

Students will learn basic Asian brush and ink techniques to create their own sumi paintings and write their own Haiku poems with brush and ink on rice paper. Angie Dixon will work with students to both write their poems and paint the images to accompany them.

About the Instructor: Angie Dixon attended college at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated in 1976 with a BFA in sculpture and a BA in art history. In 1984 she traveled to do graduated studies in fine art and art history at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.

Relief Block Printing with Theresa Neinas

Relief block printing gives individuals a means of expression beyond a single drawing. When an image is transferred onto a block and carved it con be duplicated. In this workshop students will work with small woodblocks, developing an images (or working from a prompt) and carving the block. In the second hour of the class students will print their creations!

About the Instructor: Theresa Neinas is a Seattle, Washington based artist who transplanted from the mid-west at age 19.  That year was a turning point for Theresa as she had to make the choice to stay in Wisconsin or start a new life in Washington…with $200 in her pocket and a one way train ticket it was, at the time, a sound decision.  She started out the first year of her educational journey at Viterbo College in La Crosse, Wisconsin and after years of taking fun classes she finally knocked off the science and math classes she need to receive her BA in Art from the University of Washington in 1990 (To her surprise she enjoyed those classes as well).  Theresa has been doing lino block prints since 1995 (she is self taught in this medium) and has been enjoying its process ever since.

Tuesday, October 21 or Wednesday, October 22

Erin Nix will be working with individuals as the group progresses, and will provide handouts on summary topics, as well as lists of places to find materials to continue working in needle felt.

About the instructor: Erin Nix has been needle felting for two years, during that time she has learned the art of needle felting, discovered some of the best materials, and found resources to help learn new techniques.
