King County Library Author Event: Electable by Ali Vitali September 24, 2024

Electable by Ali Vitali
Tuesday, September 24, 6:30-7:30pm

Join KCLS for a special author talk with NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent Ali Vitali. She will discuss her 2022 book, Electable: Why America Hasn’t Put a Woman In the White House…Yet

The political landscape was shaken to its core when President Joe Biden announced he would be stepping down from re-election.

Not only was the announcement unprecedented, it thrust Vice President Kamala Harris into the spotlight as the presumptive Democratic nominee, marking the second time Republican candidate Donald Trump will face off against a female candidate.

The road to the Election Day is long, but can a woman finally break the glass ceiling and win the White House?

Opening with the moment when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were finally declared the winners of the 2020 race, Electable is a sweeping look at a lingering question from that Presidential race. Why, when we saw more women run for President of the United States than ever before, did we still not cross that final hurdle?

Woven throughout is close examination of the treatment of Hillary Clinton, Geraldine Ferraro, Shirley Chisholm and those on the right.

Grappling with ideas around the “likeability” and “electability” issues, as well as fundraising hurdles many female candidates face, Vitali asks the same questions she and so many have been grappling with for decades, but especially since Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016: Why is it so hard for a woman to be taken seriously as a presidential contender?

What will it take for men and women to be held to the same standard? What happens next?

The King County Library System Executive Director Heidi Daniel will host the conversation. Ask questions about the book, the state of politics and insights from Vitali’s national reporting.

Vitali is based in Washington, DC and is a Capitol Hill Correspondent for NBC News. She covered the 2020 presidential campaign, reporting on the campaigns of President Biden, Vice President Harris, Senator Elizabeth Warren and others. She also covered the Donald Trump White House and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Shorecrest football wins big over the Everett Seagulls 9-13-2024

Shorecrest Scots football team

Wesco 3A South football
September 13, 2024
Everett Memorial Stadium
Shorecrest 35 – Everett 6
Overall record:  2-0
Conference record: 1-0

Following up on their season opening win at home against Lakeside, the Shorecrest Football team took on the Everett Seagulls at Everett Memorial Stadium.

With storm clouds on the horizon that proceeded to dump rain midway through the first quarter, the Scots showed some thunder of their own by scoring four times before halftime, adding one more score in the third quarter to prevail over ‘Gulls, 35-6.

Senior quarterback Danny Stephenson began the rout with a deep throw in the first quarter, hitting classmate Charlie Chen in stride behind the Everett defense for a 65 yard touchdown. Chen would end the night as the receiving leader, with 84 yards on four catches. Pavel Tatarinov, a junior, added the PAT to put the Scots up 7-0.

Tatarinov was perfect for the night, with five PATs in addition to his kickoff duties.

Minutes later, Stephenson, rolling right, hit senior Ben Chesnut who bullied his way into the north endzone for a 14 yard gain and the Scot’s second TD of the night.

Following up on this score, senior Kenneth Adams, on a fourth down with two yards to go, decided to sprint 14 yards through the Everett defense for his first touchdown of the season, putting the Scots up 21-0.

Not to be outdone, senior Anthony Downing enjoyed his first varsity touchdown with what might have been the most electric play of the evening. From mid-field, Stephenson delivered a strike which Downing pulled in at the Everett 35 yard line. With one man to beat, Downing made a nifty move and then put on the afterburners to turn the catch into a 42 yard score. He finished the night with three receptions and 64 yards receiving.

Coming out after halftime, Chesnut would add a rushing TD to his total for the night, scoring from the Everett two yard line, to put the Scots up 35-0.

Defensively the Scots held the Seagulls to 30 yards on the ground, led by senior Max Beer. Beer, who returns as a second team all-Wesco pick at Linebacker, had five tackles for the night. Senior Soren Lirhus and sophomore Isaiah Blidchenko added 4.5 tackles each, with Lirhus also recovering an Everett fumble.

Junior Michael Murray, also an all-Wesco second team pick last year at defensive tackle, blocked a ‘Gulls punt as well.

Shorecrest's next game is Friday night at Edmonds Stadium at 8pm where the Scots face the Lynnwood Royals. Edmonds-Woodway High School 7600 212th St SW, Edmonds, WA 98026

King County Sheriff’s Office highlights National Co-Responder and Crisis Responder Week September 15 - 21

As part of the International Co-Responder Alliance (ICRA) National Co-Responder and Crisis Responder Week, the King County Sheriff’s Office is highlighting the importance of its Therapeutic Response Unit (TRU).

Formed in 2023, TRU partners mental health professionals with King County Sheriff’s deputies to respond to calls for service where de-escalation support would be most beneficial. These responses may also include behavioral health referrals and social service connections.

Two federal grants of close to $1 million each, will help the unit add at least five more mental health professionals to the current staff of two. Further expansion is planned after this year.

“The Therapeutic Response Unit is a necessary and evolving part of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Susie Kroll, Therapeutic Response Unit Program Manger & MHP.
“Our goal is to continue to assess the needs of our communities, focus on where we can best serve, and get people the services they need as quickly as possible.”

Currently, the two-member TRU works Tuesday through Friday 7am to 5pm. Ideally, increased staffing will eventually lead to services daily from 7am to 1am, with a concentration on the locations in need of TRU the most.

The American Psychological Association estimates that 20% of all 911 calls are related to mental health and substance use issues.

“This is a program that, during what may be the hardest moment of someone’s life, can help provide the necessary support, while law enforcement can manage the public safety aspect of the situation,” said Kroll.

TRU supports all unincorporated King County, and most contract cities, including Metro and Sound Transit. In less than two years, TRU has met with more than 300 people and organizations to establish community partnerships, analyze needs, and foster social services connections.

See more about the Therapeutic Response Team and their work here.

Anyone with questions about TRU and the services provided can email kcsotru@kingcounty.gov.
