Flag Lowering - September 15, 2024 (Dennis Flannigan)

Help clean up Washington ocean beaches at the Coastal Cleanup on September 21, 2024

One more event in 2024 will add to the total
Graphic courtesy Washington State Parks Commission

OLYMPIA –As a proud member of the Washington Clean Coast Alliance, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (Parks) will co-host the annual International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

This year’s event will take place at six state parks: Cape Disappointment, Fort Worden, Grayland Beach, Ocean City, Pacific Beach and Twin Harbors.

In partnership with Washington CoastSavers, Parks puts on three beach cleanup events a year. So far, 145,719 pounds of marine and firework debris have been cleaned off our beaches in 2024. That’s over 12,000 pounds more than last year – with one more cleanup still to be held.

The City of Long Beach, Grassroots Garbage Gang, Lions Clubs International, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, Olympic Peninsula Chief Petty Officer Association of the US Coast Guard, Port Townsend Marine Science Center and Surfrider Foundation Olympia Chapter all help with this event by hosting a registration site with dedicated volunteers and recruiting volunteers to support marine debris removal efforts.

“If not collected, much of the garbage ends up in the ocean where birds, fish and marine mammals get entangled or ingest this marine debris, and microplastics end up in the food chain,” says Parks’ Volunteer Program Specialist Paul Ruppert.
“Part of the Washington State Parks mission and core values is to care for Washington’s most treasured lands and waters, and a commitment to stewardship that safeguards high-quality park assets to future generations.”

Volunteers can be a part of that mission by signing up for the International Coastal Cleanup. Visit CoastSavers.org to learn more about the International Coastal Cleanup, view a list of all participating beaches and pre-register for the event.

On arrival, participants volunteering at a Washington state park will check in at one of these locations:
  • Long Beach: Bolstad Ocean Beach Approach (OBA), Ocean Park OBA
  • Central Coast: Ocean City OBA, Chance A La Mer OBA, Bonge Ave OBA
  • Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca: Port Townsend Marine Science Center

Volunteers should dress for variable weather conditions, wear sturdy footwear and pack a lunch with plenty of water. Upon check-in, participants will receive supplies to help them pick up debris.

However, volunteers are encouraged to bring reusable gloves. The check-in station also serves as the dumpster location for marine debris after collection. A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access on state-managed lands on September 21.

Gloria's Insects: Sylvia the Sachem...

Thursday, September 12, 2024

Photo copyright Gloria Z. Nagler

Yep, said Sylvia, doesn't take much to attract me to a plant... even just one blossom meets the criteria, photog.

(Sylvia is probably a Sachem Butterfly, aka grass skipper. Skippers' antennae are looped backward at their tips like a hook. Other kinds of butterflies have clubbed tips. Skippers are also smaller but stockier than other butterflies. And they're extremely fast fliers! Skippers are one of my favorite animals to spot in the summer garden... so glad I found this one even so late in the season.)

Shoreline satisfaction survey: residents want city to address homelessness and build sidewalks

By Oliver Moffat

At the Monday, September 9 meeting, the Shoreline city council reviewed results of the 2024 resident satisfaction survey - which the city conducts every two years.

Residents expressed high satisfaction with the city and its parks but gave the city low marks for dining, entertainment, sidewalks and its response to homelessness.

A chart from the resident satisfaction survey compares Shoreline with other cities in the US and Northwest

Most residents (89%) said Shoreline was an “excellent” or “good” place to live - far higher than the US and Northwest average of 49%. Survey respondents have for decades rated Shoreline favorably on this question with 91% in 2014 and 87% in 2004.

Of all city services, residents (again) rated the overall quality of parks and recreation most favorably with 81% saying they were satisfied. Shoreline residents rate our parks much higher compared to other cities in the US (48%) and Northwest (49%). Resident satisfaction with parks hasn’t changed much over the years with 82% satisfied in 2014 and 79% in 2004.

Satisfaction rating rebounded significantly since the 2022 survey conducted during the COVID era - with 56 of 71 questions showing improvements.

But with only 23% saying they were satisfied, residents were most dissatisfied with Shoreline as a place for dining and entertainment.

And residents say dining and entertainment options are getting worse in Shoreline. Ten years ago, in 2014, 29% of residents were satisfied with dining and entertainment and when the city first asked the question in 2012, 30% were satisfied. Even during COVID lockdowns residents rated the city higher with 27% satisfied in 2022.

When asked about transportation and land use, 53% of residents said they were dissatisfied with the availability of sidewalks in their neighborhood. Notably, residents are less satisfied with sidewalk availability now than they were in 2014 when 47% were dissatisfied and in 2004 when only 41% were dissatisfied.

A map from the resident satisfaction survey shows opinions about sidewalks in Shoreline neighborhoods

In 2018, voters approved a sales tax increase to pay for new sidewalks. As part of the ballot measure, twelve locations were identified for new sidewalks across the city but the city estimates those projects won’t be completed until 2029.

Of all city services, residents were (again) most dissatisfied with Shoreline’s “overall response to homelessness” with only 30% saying they were satisfied. And 50% of residents said the city should do more to address homelessness - more than any other city service.

A chart from the satisfaction survey shows residents want the city to address homelessness

In 2020 and again in 2022, residents also told the city that addressing homelessness should be its top priority and residents rated the city’s response to homelessness as the service they were most dissatisfied with.

Despite repeated resident requests for the city to take action on homelessness, in April, the Shoreline council approved a housing and human services plan that recommended the city instead “Maintain Current Level of Service” while city staff continue to study the problem.

Call for Artists for new public art at Horizon View Park

Horizon View Park in Lake Forest Park

The LFP Garden Tour and City of LFP have put out a call for Artists (RFQ) for new public art at Horizon View Park.

The selected artist(s) will create a free-standing artwork to be located in an outdoor area visible to motorists, pedestrians and park users.

The piece will reference the history and location of the area and be in harmony with its surroundings. It may be abstract or traditional, and possibly functional. It will be composed of materials suitable for long-term outdoor display/use and easy to maintain. The artwork must be new work created for this site.

The sculpture will most likely be located in an area near the entrance and/or play ground at Horizon View Park which is located at the highest point in Lake Forest Park.

This area has mounding terrain and would be enhanced by a creative bench or other interactive element.

The park provides an opportunity to contemplate the night sky, surrounding mountains and territorial landscape. Amenities for active use of Horizon View Park include a soccer field, tennis court, half-court basketball, walking paths around a reservoir and through a wooded area, picnic tables, and a playground.

Horizon View Park is located in a residential neighborhood and is enjoyed by all ages and abilities. While there are several pieces of public art in the Town Center/City Hall area of LFP, this will be the first public art installation in the Horizon View Park neighborhood.

The full RFQ can be seen here

Questions can be directed to publicartlfpgardentour@gmail.com

Ribbon cutting Friday, September 13, 2024 for Kruckeberg boardwalk

Wednesday, September 11, 2024

Forma Construction workers

By Diane Hettrick

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is four acres of woodland and gardens in the Richmond Beach neighborhood. Most of the site was inaccessible for anyone unable to walk over roots on uneven, sloping ground.

And Kruckeberg wanted to protect its forest while letting visitors enjoy it.

The creative solution was to build an elevated boardwalk, with a gentle slope and protective sides. Over four feet off the ground in some places, it zig-zags gently through the trees.

The official opening / ribbon cutting is this Friday, September 13, 2024 from 5:30 - 6:30pm.

Remarks from former Executive Director Joe Abken (2017-2022) and Dick Olmstead, former board member.

Gather for light refreshments, fun photo opportunities and a truly elevated experience.

If a tree is in the way, work around it

Forma Construction and Mithun design are justifiably proud of their work.

Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
  • March - October: 10am-5pm
  • November - February: 10am-3pm
Admission is free, but a donation is appreciated!

20312 15th Ave NW, Shoreline, WA 98177
206-546-1281
info@kruckeberg.org

The garden has a small parking lot. Alternatively, there are a number of side streets in the area that you can park on. (No parking on walkways, or private driveways.) Overflow parking available at Richmond Beach Congregational Church, in the upper lot and the gravel lot along 195th.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

These awards honor outstanding books published by Washington authors in 2023. An award is given based on the strength of the publication's literary merit, lasting importance and overall quality to an author who is a current resident of Washington state.

For the 2024 book awards, judges read and evaluated 292 books.

About the nominations, Joy says,

Our area has so many fantastic authors, so it is incredible to be honored for my work across categories. They sent me a separate email for each book that was a finalist, so I was delighted, and then shocked, and then utterly astonished!
You can read more about my books at joymccullough.com and you can find my books at Shoreline's own independent bookstore, Ridgecrest Books.

Submissions for the 2025 awards cycle are being accepted at this time. For more information, see the Washington Center for the Book's website.

Silje Sodal named Community Champion by City of Shoreline

On August 16, 2024 the City of Shoreline awarded Silje Sodal the Community Champion Award.

Silje Sodal has been a mainstay in the north end human services scene for decades – from her service in the schools to leading an array of human services initiatives – she has made her presence known. For her work as a volunteer in the Shoreline Public Schools, she was awarded the Golden Acorn Award and the Outstanding Advocate Award.

Most importantly, Silje served as the Executive Director the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA) from January 2018 until July of 2024. During that period, she expanded board membership and partnerships with providers, school districts, faith organizations, and the five north King County cities.

Through her direction, NUHSA advocated for expanded tenant protections in member cities, worked to create a north end severe weather shelter to serve our most vulnerable, and brought attention to the needs of the north end in important King County grant funding processes.

While Silje recently transitioned to the Executive Director role at Third Place Commons, we know she will remain involved in the needs of the north end communities, including Shoreline.

Untangling major bus route changes (with corrections)

An updated map from Metro shows bus routes starting September 14

By Oliver Moffat

Metro Transit, Community Transit and Sound Transit are making big changes to bus service in the Shoreline and North King County region starting September 14, 2024. County Councilmember Rod Dembowski sponsored the Metro changes.

A previous article reporting major bus changes coming September 14 missed details that transit riders should be aware of (the author regrets the errors but does not regret the time spent away from his computer).

Specifically, Metro won’t be deleting Route 372 and adding Route 72 until next year; not this week as implied in the previous article. Metro has also decided to not add Route 324

The previous article also incorrectly called Route 331 a “new” route when it is in fact an existing route that will get increased early morning and late night service.

Here are summaries of bus changes coming soon to the Shoreline and North King County region.

Starting Saturday, September 14, King County Metro says they will add 3,700 bus trips per week across its entire service area - increasing weekday bus trips by nearly 5% to 11,235 daily trips and increasing weekend trips by 8% to 8,241 on Saturdays and 7,649 on Sundays.

Metro is deleting Route 302 from Richmond Beach but Route 303 will now make a stop in South Lake Union and have one additional trip in the morning.

Metro will delete the 320 from Kenmore but Route 322 will now stop at Northgate and add stops in South Lake Union.

The new route 333 will (finally) provide east/west service along NE 175th St and connect Montlake Terrace station to Shoreline South station.

The new route 365 will run north/south along 5th Ave NE connecting the North City and Ridgecrest light rail stations.

Metro is expanding its Metro Flex on-demand service to parts of Brier, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Mountlake Terrace, and Shoreline starting Monday, September 16.

Route 331 from Kenmore to Shoreline Community College will now turn north off of Ballinger Way to connect to the Montlake Terrace station - eliminating stops between 15th Ave NE and 19th Ave NE.

Route 345 will no longer connect to Shoreline Community College and will instead connect to the Shoreline South station.

East/west Route 330 will also be deleted, removing another connection to the campus. But new route 333 and existing Route 5 and Route 331 will continue to serve the college.

Route 346 won’t go south to Northgate and will instead run north/south along Meridian connecting the Aurora Village Transit Center with the Shoreline South station.

Route 348 will have increased frequency and will run along 180th instead of 175th in North City with a connection at the Shoreline North station.

Metro says the RapidRide E Line will have more trips, restoring service on Aurora to 2022 levels.

Routes 73, 301, 304, 330 and 347 will be deleted by Metro.

A map from Community Transit’s website shows the new express route 909 to Edmonds and the Blue Line extension to the Shoreline North station

Snohomish County’s Community Transit is also making big service changes on Monday, September 14.

The Swift Blue from Shoreline to Everett will add a stop at the Shoreline North station in addition to Aurora Village.

Route 130 will connect downtown Edmonds to Aurora Village and the Montlake Terrace and Lynnwood stations. The new Express Route 909 will connect Edmonds to the Mountlake Terrace Station - improving car-free access to the Edmonds waterfront, train station and Kingston Ferry.

Route 106 will run through downtown Bothell before stopping at UW Bothell/Cascadia College and Route 120 will extend south to serve the college campus after passing through downtown. New Route 121 will also connect to the campus.

New routes will connect riders to the Lynnwood station: Route 901 to Mill Creek, Route 903 to Lake Stevens, Route 904 to Marysville, Route 905 to Stanwood, Route 907 to Arlington and Route 103 will connect to Mukilteo and Everett.

New route 117 will connect the Mukilteo Ferry to the Lynnwood station, opening a car-free trip to Whidbey Island.

Community Transit will delete routes 105, 107, 113, 227, 247, 402, 405, 410, 412, 413, 415, 416, 417, 421, 422, 425, 435, 810, 821, 860, 871, 880.

A map from Sound Transit’s website shows bus routes that will change on September 14

Sound Transit is also making bus route changes.

To mitigate overcrowding on the 1 Line, Sound Transit is adding temporary Downtown Express 515 to give riders a train-free connection from Lynnwood and Seattle. And Route 512 and Route 513 to Everett will now connect to the Lynnwood station instead of Northgate.

Everett Transit made only minor service changes on Sunday, September 8.

Metro plans a later phase of changes once the East Link Extension tracks on the I-90 bridge are fixed and the 2 Line (hopefully) connects Redmond to Lynnwood in 2025.

In this later phase, Metro plans to re-route the 522 BRT Express from Bothell and Woodinville to connect to the Shoreline South station instead of the Roosevelt station.

Metro plans to delete the 372 possibly in 2025 or 2026, forcing UW staff, faculty and students commuting between the Bothell and Seattle campuses to make a transfer. In its place, Metro would add Route 72 from the Shoreline South station to the UW Seattle campus and would extend Route 331 to connect to the UW Bothell / Cascadia College campus instead of terminating in Kenmore.

Metro’s Trip Planner allows riders to set the date of their trip and riders can call Metro’s Customer Information at 206-553-3000 for more help.

The Metro changes were sponsored by King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski and voted on and approved by the King County Council in March. According to Metro, the community-based Lynnwood Link Mobility Board provided input into the changes.

Councilmember Dembowski said, “This enhanced system brings new options for transit riders in north King County. We’ve added more east-west routes and additional connections to our new light rail service.
"I am especially excited about the new Metro Flex service I was able to secure for neighborhoods in Lake Forest Park and Kenmore that will provide residents door-to-door, on-demand service.”
