The Frances Walton Competition and Tour

For more than thirty years, the Ladies Musical Club’s Frances Walton Competition has provided a unique opportunity for classical musicians ages 20 to 35 to audition for an award package including the following:Generous cash prizes.A live performance on Classical KING-FM 98.1, one of the premier classical music stations in the U.S.An outreach and recital tour of locations throughout Washington State.

Applications open in November and close in March. The contest attracts talented musicians from across the United States, who compete in 7 solo categories:BrassMarimbaPianoRecorderStringVoiceWoodwind

Or they can compete in a chamber ensemble category of 2-5 musicians.

Finalists are selected in blind adjudication rounds to compete in Seattle’s Frances Walton Competition weekend. These early round adjudicator panels are specialists drawn from LMC’s membership and occasional outside professionals. The competition is held the first weekend in June in a whirlwind of musical events that are all free and open to the public.

Solo and chamber ensemble finalists compete in Seattle all day on Saturday, and winners are announced in a short ceremony that evening.

Sunday, the winners perform a free public Winners’ Concert followed by a reception, then regroup in Seattle in September to embark on outreach tours across Washington State.

Church of the Redeemer

We are an Episcopal Church serving north King County and south Snohomish County, Washington.

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 NE 181st St in Kenmore, WA. The campus is a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.

The Episcopal Church welcomes you.

Forgotten Union Veterans of the Civil War are honored in ceremony at Evergreen Washelli

Honor Guard by the Sons of the American Revolution

By Doug Cerretti

I had the distinct privilege to honor 29 veterans who served during time of war and 31 women who supported them at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home (11111 Aurora Ave N Seattle, WA 98133) on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

While we honor all veterans equally, these veterans are unique. For one, these cremated remains were unclaimed. We do not know the machinations that occurred when these veterans and spouses died but no one, not even family members claimed them.

With the support of Dignity Memorial, parent company of Evergreen-Washelli, the Missing in American Project (MIAP) discovered these unclaimed cremains on shelves in the basement of local funeral homes.

After many research hours, volunteers from MIAP validated the identity of these cremains and that they were veterans.

As MIAP Vice-President Clyde Taylor said,
“Veterans signed a blank check to the United States when they enlisted which include payment up to and including their life. In return they are promised a dignified and honorable military burial.

"Through the effort of MIAP and Dignity Memorial, these unclaimed cremains are now claimed fulfilling that obligation.

"The finding of so many unclaimed cremains is sad but I believe even worse for those who have served our country."

This happens more often than many of us are aware of; two years ago, Dignity Memorial and MIAP reclaimed 123 veterans as was described in the Shoreline Area News

The other unique thing about these cremains is that they are Union veterans of the Civil War and their cremains have been unclaimed for over 100 years!

As the colors were carried in for the ceremony by the Washington National Guard, Ashokan Farewell was played.

Ashokan Farewell was written in 1982 by Jay Ungar and was played several times in Ken Burns’ PBS Civil War miniseries in 1990 and this song will forever be linked to the Civil War. The song tugs your emotions of loss, longing and sorrow as you think of those that fought in the War Between the States. (Listen to it here)

Many Union veterans moved west after the war to start a new life away from the horrors they experienced and many of them traveled to Washington State.

They included George L. Camp (1835-1918) a soldier of the 92nd Ohio Infantry who survived being shot during the Battle of Missionary Ridge in 1863 and lived in Seattle until 1918, along with his wife, Ernestine.

William O'Neal (1846 - 1919) a soldier of the 45th Ohio infantry who was a survivor of the horrors of the notorious Andersonville prison camp.

Emeline Mattice (1831 - 1913), is representative of the toll taken by war on families and the home front. Her husband survived the war but he died shortly after. She lost her two brothers in the war, one died of disease in 1862 and another died in battle in Virginia just before Lee's surrender at Appomattox in 1865.

Richard Heisler from Civil War Seattle said that in 1880 there were 75 Union veterans in Seattle and by 1905 there were 2000 in King County and 3000 in Washington State, more per capita than any state in the Union. And here they lived the rest of their lives.

The last Seattle Union veteran, Hiram Randall Gale, passed away in 1951 at the age of 104.

On Thursday August 22, 2024, the claimed cremains of these Union veterans and their spouses were transported to Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th St Kent, WA 98042) for their final honors and final resting place.

Their names were spoken as they were carried from the hearse individually or as husband and wife through an honor line of the Sons of the American Revolution.

The Union veterans were finally honored with a musket volley by the Historical 4th Infantry Regiment, taps by Debbie Dawson, Peninsula Veteran Honor Guard and Flag Folding Ceremony by the Washington Army National Guard.

As Matt Fox, Dignity Memorial, said, “It is long overdue that these veterans and their spouses are laid to rest and as we speak their names, they live a little longer with stories and memories of families we will never know.”

School starts today - drive carefully around school walk routes and bus stops

Tuesday, August 27, 2024

Today, August 27, 2024 is the first day of school for Shoreline Schools.

Children will be walking to school, and waiting at school bus stops.

In cities with few sidewalks, roadside ditches, hilly twisting roads - and inattentive and impatient drivers - just getting to school can be a dangerous activity.

Be aware, put your phone down, and keep your eyes on the road.

And remember that you don't get to pass a school bus with its "Stop" paddle out.

New bus routes start September 14, 2024

By Diane Hettrick

I have focused on the Shoreline North / 185th transit station because it borders my Echo Lake neighborhood and because the construction has affected my life for years.

However, when I studied the various Metro proposals for routes to the new 1 Line (aka Lynnwood Link) stations, I realized, somewhat to my shock, that my station is actually Mountlake Terrace.

The new routes, focused on getting people to the transit stations, will start on September 14, 2024.

The 331 bus line starts at Shoreline Community College, heads north through the middle of the Hillwood neighborhood, then east to the Aurora Village Transit Center in the Echo Lake neighborhood. From there it goes north on Meridian, then east to the Mountlake Terrace light rail station.

After that, it heads down Ballinger Way to Lake Forest Park. then Kenmore, and finishes in Bothell. So the 331 serves riders in Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Ballinger, Echo Lake, and Hillwood.

Travels with Charlie: Always worth going for a walk with Charlie

Monday, August 26, 2024

By Gordon Snyder

Last weekend on a beautiful day, Charlie and I headed to Log Boom Park, but it was so popular the parking lot was full and cars were waiting for a space.

So… We headed to another park down the road.

On Wednesday, we stopped by Log Boom Park again. Lots of parking spaces and an to my surprise > an empty beach.

Plenty of great smells for Charlie and super weather to watch for me.

One of the great things about wandering around with Charlie is… you never know what will happen.

As we headed back to the car, there was some music in the air.

Rockery Summer Music Camp musicians

Turns out a group of young musicians from Rockery Summer Music Camp were giving a concert across from the Playground.

Can you imagine being a little kid swinging and climbing around while live music fills the air?
Priceless!

Always worth going for a walk with Charlie.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Frogs are not only unbelievably diverse in their behavioral strategies for survival and choice of habitats, but they are compelling in their physical design and beauty. Their stories and spirit are my tonic for artistic response.

More than 7600 species of frogs exist worldwide and only recently have we begun to fully appreciate their essential roles within the complex fabric of a healthy ecosystem and in turn their importance in our lives. - Tony Angell

In tandem with the release of Frog Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Amphibian Lives, illustrated by Tony Angell, Foster/White presents Frog Day.

The exhibition will showcase Angell's 24 clayboard etchings.

Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild thank the community for supporting their lemonade stand

Pink Polka Dots lemonade stand on the Burke Gilman Trail

The Seattle Children’s Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild would like to thank the community for their incredible support of their lemonade stand on August 25, 2024 which was held on the Burke Gilman Trail in Lake Forest Park.

The Pink Polka Dots raised $725.40 from selling home baked goods, lemonade and hand crafted cards at the four hour lemonade stand. All the money will be donated to continue pediatric brain cancer research.

The first lemonade stand was started by Quinn, Ally and Aila
in 2014 and the girls are still baking and selling 10 years later

The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild was founded in 2006 in memory of Sydney Coxon. Sydney died at age eleven after a battle of just over a year with an untreatable brainstem glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

The Guild was founded one month later by her 6th grade friends in honor of Sydney.

The Pink Polka Dots have raised over a million dollars in a variety of fundraisers over the years. If you would like to donate, please visit pinkpolkadotsguild.org

HomeTechHacker: Unlock Your Potential with AI: Personal Use Benefits

By Marlon Buchanan

It’s hard to go even a day without hearing something about artificial intelligence. Most of the media focuses on how industries and businesses are using AI to transform the workplace.

It’s often overlooked that AI is now a practical tool that can enhance our daily lives. AI is already a part of your everyday routine—from the voice assistants on your smartphone to the recommendation engines on your favorite streaming services.

Here’s why you need to embrace AI tools for personal use and how they can significantly improve your life.

Using AI Chatbots

AI chatbots are transforming the way we interact with technology and access information. These intelligent assistants can handle a wide range of tasks, from answering customer service inquiries to providing personalized recommendations.

Chatbots like ChatGPT can help brainstorm ideas, draft emails, and even guide you through complex processes. By integrating AI chatbots into your daily routine, you can enhance productivity, streamline communication, and access instant support whenever you need it.

Enhancing Productivity

One of the most compelling reasons to use AI tools is their boost to productivity. AI can automate mundane and repetitive tasks, freeing up your time for more important activities. Tools like AI-driven calendar assistants can schedule meetings, set reminders, and even send follow-up emails, ensuring you stay organized and efficient.

Similarly, AI-powered to-do list apps can prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance, helping you manage your workload effectively.

Personalizing Your Experience

AI has the unique ability to learn from your preferences and habits, providing a personalized experience that’s tailored just for you.

For instance, music streaming services like Spotify use AI algorithms to analyze your listening habits and recommend songs you’re likely to enjoy. This personalized approach extends to various aspects of life, from online shopping recommendations to personalized workout plans, making your interactions with technology more enjoyable and efficient.

Improving Decision-Making

AI tools are excellent at processing large amounts of data and providing insights that can help you make better decisions. Financial management apps, for example, use AI to analyze your spending patterns and offer budgeting advice, helping you save money and manage your finances more effectively. Similarly, AI-powered health apps can monitor your physical activity, sleep patterns, and diet, providing recommendations to improve your overall well-being.

Enhancing Creativity

Contrary to the belief that AI stifles creativity, it can be a powerful tool for enhancing it. AI-driven design tools can help you create stunning graphics, while AI writing assistants can suggest improvements to your text, ensuring your content is engaging and polished. Whether you’re a writer, artist, or musician, AI tools can inspire and streamline the creative process, allowing you to focus on your craft.

If you’re ready to harness the power of AI and transform your personal and professional life, now is the perfect time to start.

Enroll in HomeTechHacker Academy’s free AI Tools course to learn how to leverage AI to get up to date on what AI tools can do for you right now. Our course provides practical insights and hands-on experience with popular AI tools, empowering you to make the most of this groundbreaking technology.

"For the Birds" Concert September 22, 2024 (but not OUR For the Birds)

"For the Birds" Concert, for members of the general public, will be held at Edmonds United Methodist Church Sanctuary on Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 4:00 to 5:30pm. 828 Caspers St, Edmonds WA

This concert is hosted by Interfaith Climate Action and it is more than just a concert. The performance engages the power of artistic expression -- live music, spoken words, images, and poetry - to connect audiences deeply and emotionally to the scientific realities of climate change.

Ultimately a story of hope, individuals leave the performance feeling empowered to take meaningful action.

Why Birds? Birds are a part of our daily life experience, and an inspiring connection to the natural world. But climate change is having a significant and alarming impact on many bird species, and this should be a wake-up call for all of us.

Tickets are $10 and $20, children under 12 are free as are students in environmental clubs and climate committees in area middle and high schools. We are in the process of securing child care for children too young to enjoy the performance.

Purchase tickets here

Various individuals and organizations are being approached for donations in order to keep the prices low so everyone can attend. The performers are the Nelda Swiggett Band, well known in Seattle. Nelda is the composer and her quintet will be performing this debut concert.
