Billboards inform Puget Sound citizens of nuclear weapons stockpiled in their backyard

Billboard in Lake Forest Park - 20 miles from largest concentration of deployed nukes
in the world. Photo by Karol Milner

By Glen Milner

On July 22, 2024 and continuing for four weeks, five billboards display the following paid advertisement: Did You Know, We’re only *** Miles from the Largest Concentration of Deployed Nukes in the World! Let’s Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

Included in the five advertisements are maps showing the proximity of the cities and billboards in Everett, Lake Forest Park, Seattle, and Tacoma—to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, homeport for 8 of the Navy’s 14 Trident nuclear-powered submarines.

The billboards serve as a public service announcement—informing the reader of the exact number of miles they are at that exact location, to the largest concentration of deployed nuclear weapons in the world.

Pat Moriarity, the artist commissioned by Ground Zero to produce the billboards stated,
"I have lived in Kitsap County for 24 years, so I've been long aware of the Bangor sub base. But until recently I never really understood the true extent of just how many nuclear weapons were stockpiled so close to my home.
"I'd like to think if my neighbors knew, they would be concerned about getting rid of them. As a species we need to evolve past this mutual assured destruction mentality. It's like the scariest staring contest you can imagine.”

The cartoon style billboards by Pat Moriarity are the second of a series of cartoon billboards that show the proximity of communities across Washington State to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.

Comic book artist Pat Moriarity created the cartoon.

Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor is homeport to the largest concentration of deployed nuclear warheads in the world. The nuclear warheads are deployed on Trident D-5 missiles on SSBN submarines and are stored in an underground nuclear weapons storage facility on the base.

Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action has also joined with Pax Christi USA to purchase five billboards that will begin on August 19, 2024 for four weeks with a message from Pope Francis, declaring that nuclear weapons are illegal and immoral. The sign, designed by Pax Christi USA, also demands that nuclear weapons be eliminated in the Puget Sound region.

There are eight Trident SSBN submarines deployed at Bangor Six Trident SSBN submarines are deployed on the East Coast at Kings Bay, Georgia.

One Trident submarine carries the destructive force of over 1,000 Hiroshima bombs (the Hiroshima bomb was 15 kilotons).

Bangor to Lake Forest Park - 20 miles

Each Trident submarine was originally equipped for 24 Trident missiles. In 2015-2017 four missile tubes were deactivated on each submarine as a result of the New START Treaty. Currently, each Trident submarine deploys with 20 D-5 missiles and about 90 nuclear warheads (an average of 4-5 warheads per missile). The warheads are either the W76-1 90-kiloton warheads, W88 455-kiloton warheads, or W-76-2 8-kiloton warheads.

The Navy in early 2020 started deploying the new W76-2 low-yield warhead (approximately eight kilotons) on select ballistic submarine missiles at Bangor (following initial deployment in the Atlantic in December 2019). The warhead was deployed to deter Russian first use of tactical nuclear weapons, dangerously creating a lower threshold for the use of U.S. strategic nuclear weapons.

Comic Book artist Pat Moriarity, who created the cartoon style billboard near his home in Port Orchard, is an award-winning internationally known artist.

Hans M. Kristensen is the expert source for the statement, “Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor… with largest concentration of deployed nuclear weapons in the world.” (See cited source material here and here .) Mr. Kristensen is director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists where he provides the public with analysis and background information about the status of nuclear forces and the role of nuclear weapons.

The billboards are an effort by Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, a grassroots organization in Poulsbo, Washington, to reawaken public awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons in the Puget Sound region.

The billboard ads

The five billboard ads measure 10 ft. 6 in. tall by 22 ft. 9 in. in length and will be displayed for one month starting on July 22 for the cartoon billboards and on August 19 for billboards with the statement by Pope Francis. The billboards, and second of a series of billboards by Pat Moriarity, are located at:
  • Evergreen Way and north of Lake St, Everett WA
  • Bothell Way and south of NE 149th St, Lake Forest Park WA
  • Stewart St and west of Minor Ave, Seattle WA
  • Pacific Ave and north of S 72nd St, Tacoma WA
  • 6th Ave and west of N Mason Ave, Tacoma,WA
The five billboards with Pax Christi USA and the statement by Pope Francis will be near the following locations:
  • Mukilteo Speedway (Highway 525) and north of Bernie Webber Dr
  • Bothell Way and south of NE 149th St, Lake Forest Park WA
  • Denny Way between Taylor Ave and Vine St, Seattle WA
  • Center St and east of S Madison St, Tacoma WA
  • 6th Ave between S Trafton St and State St, Tacoma,WA
The photo of the submarine with the statement by Pope Francis is from a U.S. Navy DVIDS website. The caption for the photo states:

Brian Badura/Released)

Our proximity to the largest number of deployed strategic nuclear weapons puts us near a dangerous local and international threat. When citizens become aware of their role in the prospect of nuclear war, or the risk of a nuclear accident, the issue is no longer an abstraction. Our proximity to Bangor demands a deeper response.

Nuclear weapons and resistance

In the 1970s and 1980s, thousands demonstrated against nuclear weapons at the Bangor base and hundreds were arrested. Seattle Archbishop Hunthausen had proclaimed the Bangor submarine base the “Auschwitz of Puget Sound” and in 1982 began to withhold half of his federal taxes in protest of “our nation's continuing involvement in the race for nuclear arms supremacy.''

On May 27, 2016, President Obama spoke in Hiroshima and called for an end to nuclear weapons. He said that the nuclear powers “…must have the courage to escape the logic of fear, and pursue a world without them.” Obama added, “We must change our mindset about war itself.”

__________________________________________

The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action was founded in 1977. The center is on 3.8 acres adjoining the Trident submarine base at Bangor, Washington. The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action offers the opportunity to explore the roots of violence and injustice in our world and to experience the transforming power of love through nonviolent direct action. We resist all nuclear weapons, especially the Trident ballistic missile system.

Dollar Tree fined by state for selling school supplies containing toxic metals

Pencil pouches sold at Dollar Tree in some cases contained more than four times the state and federal limit for lead or four times the state limit for cadmium. Photo courtesy State Attorney General's office.

SEATTLE — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced a legally binding resolution requiring Dollar Tree to pay $190,000 and more thoroughly test children’s products. The resolution follows an Attorney General investigation finding school supplies sold by the national retailer had illegal levels of toxic heavy metals lead and cadmium.

To avoid a lawsuit, Greenbrier International, doing business as Dollar Tree, entered into a nationwide, legally binding agreement in King County Superior Court. The agreement requires the company to ensure that the laboratories it uses outside the U.S. follow testing methods for lead and cadmium that are audited and verified through independent experts.

Testing by the Washington state Department of Ecology revealed that numerous children’s bracelets and pencil pouches sold by Dollar Tree stores in Washington state contained illegal levels of lead and cadmium.

The department tested bracelets and pencil pouches sold at Dollar Tree stores in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Its independent testing showed the pencil pouches in some cases contained more than four times the state and federal limit for lead or four times the state limit for cadmium.

The department turned over the test results to the Attorney General’s Office for investigation and enforcement under the state Consumer Protection Act as well as the federal Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.

When the Attorney General’s Office informed Dollar Tree of the investigation’s findings, Dollar Tree provided documentation from laboratories outside of the U.S. showing that the toxic metals, like lead and cadmium, fell within permissible levels.

The Attorney General’s Office presented the company with findings from an expert, independent review of these tests that showed they contained errors or missing information. Dollar Tree cooperated with the investigation and removed the flagged products from its stores.

Voters approving Northshore Fire levy lid lift

King County website shows voters supporting the Northshore fire levy lid lift

Early results show voters in Kenmore and Lake Forest Park approving a levy lid lift for the first time in over 20 years.

According to Fire Chief Matt Cowan, rising labor and operational costs plus upcoming capital improvement projects are depleting Northshore’s budget but state laws limit how fast the department can raise rates to increase revenue.

The department has reached the maximum for its fire benefit charge and the lid lift will allow the department to raise fire levy rates.

In unofficial results as of August 7, 62.92% of votes counted were in support of the levy lid lift.

Results are unofficial until certified by the county election boards on August 20, 2024. The Secretary of State certifies final results by August 23, 2024.

Shoreline seeks volunteers to interview Police Chief replacement candidates

Shoreline’s Police Chief Kelly Park
shown in a photo from the city’s website.
By Oliver Moffat

Shoreline City Manager Bristol Ellington is seeking a new Police Chief and is looking for volunteers to help interview candidates. More information is available on the city’s website.

The city of Shoreline announced Police Chief Kelly Park was promoted by King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall to Patrol Operations Division Chief effective August 31, 2024.

In her new position, Chief Park will be part of the Executive Leadership Team of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Park has been Shoreline’s chief of police since October of 2022 and has served with the Sheriff’s Office for 23 years.

Park will be replacing Jose Marenco who has served as Patrol Operations Division Chief since January of 2023 and will be replacing former Shoreline Police Chief Shawn Ledford who is retiring.

Shoreline contracts the King County Sheriff Office to provide police services and the Sheriff will select a list of candidates for the City Manager to choose from.
A screenshot from a presentation by Shoreline Police Chief Kelly Park shows the structure of the department and vacant positions.

Park’s departure adds to Shoreline’s police staffing shortages. In April, Chief Park presented the city council with the 2023 police services report in which she said police staffing shortages were impacting the department.

At the time, the department had nine vacancies. In 2023, average police response times for the highest priority 911 calls in Shoreline increased by more than two minutes to 6 minutes and 21 seconds from 4 minutes and 11 seconds in 2022.

Because of staffing shortages, the traffic unit was reassigned to 911 calls and, as a result, traffic citations decreased from 2022 to 2023, from 312 to 289. The report also said that between 2018 and 2022 the city averaged 394 car crashes reported to police per year. But in 2023, the police responded to 651 crashes - an increase of 65%.

For the Birds: Help Your Local Birds

Black-capped Chickadee really into its cooling bath.

By Christine Southwick

Water is probably the most important item you can provide - clean and cool in the summer, liquid in the winter. Water can be as simple as a large dish, or it can become a dramatic yard feature. Running water, like a fountain or mini stream will draw in more resident birds and even migrants flying over, needing a refreshing stop.

Black-headed Grosbeak, male
Plant trees and native bushes for food, roosting, and hiding places for most of our local birds.

Keep large trees (dead trees made-into-snags are vital for larger cavity birds) for nesting sites, and plant native serviceberry trees and/or crabapple trees, or other fruiting native trees like Indian Plum and bushes like Snowberries.

By planting native vegetation, local insects, which birds need to survive, will be found and controlled by our native birds. Birds are great pollinators which help fruits and even flowers.

Think about creating your yard as a Certified Wildlife Habitat to help compensate for major habitat loss—the most dangerous cause of loss of birds—both in numbers and in species.

If you have insects that are eating some of your plants too fast, spray them off with water, hand pick, or buy beneficial insects, and attract more insect-eating birds into your yard with water and habitat. That will make both you and local birds happy.

Pesticides kill an estimated 72 million birds each year! So don’t use pesticides. They aren’t good for birds, kids, dogs, cats, or the environment.

Western Tanager, breeding male just passing through, stopping for a much needed drink
And please, watch for cats. Spray them with water if they come into your yard. They will learn to go elsewhere, at least when they see you.

Cats are an invasive species which kill approximately 2.4 billion birds EACH year!

As a cat owner, I love my cat(s). Most cats will easily adjust to watching birds through windows, and chatter away and swish their tails. I had one cat that really wanted outside. I built a successful small enclosed outside area with a cat door access so it could go in and out of the house unassisted.

My cats and I are happy and the birds are safe. So, for the few cats that insist on going outside, that is a do-able solution that also keeps cats safe from our neighborhood coyotes, cat fights, and being hit by cars. (There are fancy catios available if you prefer.)

Seed and suet also help birds and make bird watching a delight. Suet can be used all year around and helps provide protein when the bugs are sparse—especially welcome while hungry fledglings are learning to hunt bugs.

After years of planning, construction is set to begin on the next 2022 Park Bond Project!

On August 12, 2024 construction will begin at Shoreview Off-Leash Dog Park, 700 NW Innis Arden Way, Shoreline WA 98177

During construction, the park will be closed. Improvements to Shoreview Park should be completed by next summer.

Improvements will include new fencing, a paved accessible path, shade structure, shy dog area, and resurfacing of the parking lot with accessible parking and drop-off locations.

During construction, we invite you to use the new off-leash dog area at Ridgecrest Park (108 NE 161st Street).

The Eastside OLDA (1902 NE 150th Street) is also available for the rest of this year; however, it is closed for a road paving project until August 19. The Eastside OLDA is on state property and will close permanently at the end of this year.

Crafted with the same epicurean processes of roasting, drying and curing, Prime Roots koji-meats’ nostalgic flavors are ready for sandwiches, pizzas and charcuterie boards. Prime Roots joins us in the markets this July to sample their products and show us how they're making the world a better place one slice at a time.
