Three Bob Fergusons now running for governor as race takes turn for the weird

Sunday, May 12, 2024

A Republican activist convinced two Democrats, both named Bob Ferguson, to join the contest. Backers of AG Bob Ferguson, the leading Democrat, are crying foul.

BY: JERRY CORNFIELD
Washington State Standard
Attorney General Bob Ferguson is running for Governor.
His name will appear 13th on the list of 30 candidates,
with two other Bob Fergusons listed second and third.

The number of Bob Fergusons running to be Washington’s next governor grew to three on Friday.

A conservative Republican activist threw a monkey wrench into the race by recruiting two last-minute Democratic candidates who share the same name as the party’s presumed front-runner.

The newcomers, one from Yakima and the other Graham, will now share the Aug. 6 primary ballot with Attorney General Bob Ferguson.

In all, 30 candidates filed in the race.

Glen Morgan, a political conservative who has a knack for annoying elected Democrats and their progressive allies, cooked up the maneuver that immediately drew flack from the attorney general’s camp as an attempt to confuse voters.

Morgan said this had been in the works for a while as he contacted some of the 53 Washington residents named Bob Ferguson.

Deciding to file on their behalf “was pretty impulsive” and he said he had to scramble to raise money to cover the filing fee of $1,982.57 for each of the two Fergusons.

Bob Ferguson from Yakima is a retired state worker and the one from Graham is a military veteran, he said. Neither is politically experienced but both share a distaste for the state executive with the same name, Morgan said.

Ferguson, the attorney general, declined Friday to comment.

Former governor Christine Gregoire issued a statement on behalf of his campaign calling the last-minute filing a “highly deceiving and potentially illegal” effort to mislead voters.

“It’s nothing less than an attack on our democracy,” said Gregoire, a former attorney general who served as governor from 2005-2013.

Morgan countered that the only dishonesty is on the part of Ferguson for campaigning as one who will bolster public safety “when everything he’s done in office makes people less safe.”

The next important move is in the hands of Secretary of State Steve Hobbs.

Typically, in races for partisan offices, ballots contain only candidates’ names and their preferred party.

Under state law, if two or more candidates file for the same office with names similar enough to confuse voters, information can be added on the ballot to help differentiate them. Additional information will not be provided for any other candidate.

Hobbs must decide what extra wording to add. Occupation is one example he is considering. A decision is expected late Monday, after the deadline for candidates to withdraw.

Meanwhile, state election officials set the ballot order Friday through the random drawing of numbers. The late-arriving Bob Fergusons will be the second and third listed on the ballot. The attorney general landed 13th.

Keep Bothell Odd - open house May 21, 2024

Bothell, WA: On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 7:30pm, the public is invited to Bothell Lodge #124 of the International Order of Odd Fellows, 10116 NE 185th St, for an open house.

Historian Richard Heisler will share the story of the Civil War roots of Bothell's namesake family and their journey westward, from Pennsylvania to western Washington.

Richard will also explain how thousands of Civil War veterans made the Seattle area their home in the decades following the conflict. From the battlefields of Virginia to the banks of the Sammamish River, Civil War history is not as far away as we might think.

Richard Heisler is the founder of Civil War Seattle and Seattle History Tours. He has presented for many regional and national organizations museums, including the Bothell Historical Society, Pacific Northwest Historians Guild, and Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable.

He is a contributing writer for Emerging Civil War and a resident of the Seattle area for over 30 years. Historical artifacts, a tour of the hall, musical entertainment by The Swinging Patriarchs, and light refreshments will be available.

Odd Fellows have been the social heart of communities across America for over 200 years. Bothell Lodge #124, chartered in 1892, played a significant role in the history of Bothell, and today is the longest continuously operating organization in Bothell.

Its founding members include John Bothell and James Brackett (of Brackett’s Landing). Clover Leaf Rebekah Lodge #54 was chartered in 1893 so that the wives and daughters of Odd Fellows, and others in the community, could become a part of the Odd Fellows organization.

Early Rebekahs also played an active role in the growing Bothell community, with one of the founders, Alice Bothell, having previously organized Bothell’s first Sunday School in her home in 1885.

The Odd Fellows took over management of the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery in 1902 and in 1908 a fire burned down the original lodge hall, destroying both lodge and city records. A report of the lodge’s possible demise was published in the Northshore Citizen on 4/4/1990, but to paraphrase Mark Twain, the report of its death was greatly exaggerated.

The (secret) grip of Odd Fellowship remains unbroken in Bothell, and the lodge is looking forward to sharing its history and its future with members of our community.

Choir of the Sound performance will bring a musical theater style experience June 1-2, 2024

Choir of the Sound invites you on a whirlwind tour of the last 100 years of popular culture this spring, as they sing songs that vividly call up times and places.

“Stormy Weather” and “I Got Rhythm” invoke New York City in the 1930s; “Rock Around the Clock” and "Blue Suede Shoes" summon images of mid-century teen dances and the birth of rock and roll.

The Supremes, the Beatles and Whitney Houston take us back to the 60s, 70s, and 80s, just as Enya, Imagine Dragons, and Harry Styles set the tone of the 21st century.

Whatever generation you belong to, you will hear songs your parents loved, the music you came of age to, and music current today. Thanks to one of our resident composers, you will even get a taste of what the next generation of music makers has in store.

Choir of the Sound has been part of the Shoreline community since 1977. We pursue our mission to enrich the lives of our community and our members by sharing exceptional performances of diverse musical styles.

This produced show will include dances, costumes, lighting and set designs to bring you a musical theater style experience.

Protect children from falling from windows

Window guards are inexpensive and easy to install

An important message for anyone with a child in your home: When our weather warms up, emergency departments get calls about children falling from windows.

It generally happens on hot days, when windows are open, and when there are distractions in the home. Visitors, family celebrations, perhaps an ill parent, or a new cleaner or babysitter.

Adults assume that the screens will prevent the child from falling; or they assume that someone else in the home is paying attention to the child.

Screens are built to keep bugs out, not children in. Screens cannot support the weight of a child pushing through.

Here's what you can do to keep kids safer:
  1. Install window stops or guards that prevent the window from opening more than 4 inches.
  2. Move furniture away from windows to discourage kids from climbing.
  3. Always actively supervise young children.
Window guards can be purchased at hardware stores and online.

Geomagnetic storm fills the sky with color

Stars can be seen through the colors

Photos by WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse

THE CME HAS ARRIVED: Arriving hours earlier than expected, a CME struck Earth's magnetic field on May 10, 2024 at 1645 UT.

The colors shift and change

The big impact sparked a severe (G4) geomagnetic storm -- ongoing now (midnight local time). More CMEs are following close behind, and their arrival could extend the storm into the weekend. Follow this developing story @Spaceweather.com.

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun’s corona.

They can eject billions of tons of coronal material and carry an embedded magnetic field (frozen in flux) that is stronger than the background solar wind interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) strength.

CMEs travel outward from the Sun at speeds ranging from slower than 250 kilometers per second (km/s) to as fast as near 3000 km/s. The fastest Earth-directed CMEs can reach our planet in as little as 15-18 hours.

Slower CMEs can take several days to arrive. They expand in size as they propagate away from the Sun and larger CMEs can reach a size comprising nearly a quarter of the space between Earth and the Sun by the time it reaches our planet. --NOAA

AG announces investigation into Catholic Church’s handling of child sex abuse allegations

Attorney General Bob Ferguson with staff and survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy

The State Attorney General is taking legal action against the Seattle Archdiocese, as part of the investigation into whether the three Washington dioceses of the Catholic Church used charitable funds to cover up allegations of child sex abuse by clergy.

The Attorney General’s Office sent subpoenas to the Seattle Archdiocese, the Diocese of Spokane and the Diocese of Yakima.

The Seattle Archdiocese refused to cooperate. Consequently, Ferguson filed a petition to enforce the subpoena in King County Superior Court. The office is asking the court to hear the petition on May 22.

The Attorney General’s Office has a longstanding policy that it does not comment on investigations, including confirming whether they exist. Because the Seattle Archdiocese refused to comply with the office’s subpoena, the office now must seek a court order to move the investigation forward. This process made the investigation public.

“Washingtonians deserve a public accounting of how the Catholic Church handles allegations of child sex abuse, and whether charitable dollars were used to cover it up,” Ferguson said.
“As a Catholic, I am disappointed the Church refuses to cooperate with our investigation. Our goal is to use every tool we have to reveal the truth, and give a voice to survivors. If you or a loved one have been impacted by clergy abuse, please contact my office.”

Perhaps I should say Attention: Fishing birds. All three of these lakes are shallow with many bird nests in the vicinity.

Echo Lake is in Shoreline. Bitter Lake and Haller Lake are just south of us in north Seattle. All three lakes are surrounded by housing, so this could be a boon for lakeside residents with fishing poles.

Each has a small public access area but no boat launch.

About World Collage Day

World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration of collage on the Second Saturday of May.

Initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018, we invited artists and art venues to hold events on that day to celebrate collage. World Collage Day is about artists connecting across borders against a global context of entrenchment and separation.

And the day is about an art medium that excels at bringing different things together to create new forms and new ways of thinking.

Ric Kasini Kadour, the editor of Kolaj Magazine, writes, “We created World Collage Day because we wanted to honour this community of artists and to remind the world what a spirit of cooperation, mutual support, and creativity can look like.”

What Makes a Great Yard a Secret Garden? See tips from the Secret Garden team

What Makes a Great Yard a Secret Garden?
Tips from the Secret Garden selection team

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour, June 15, 2024 9am to 3pm
Tickets are available now for the 2024 garden tour.

Each June, six fabulous Lake Forest Park gardens welcome visitors during the Secret Garden tour. While the garden locations remain secret until the day of the tour, one thing is for certain: garden lovers can count on finding features, plantings and designs to delight their varied preferences. Is this a serendipitous result of just listing a set of nominated gardens?

Choosing the gardens is actually quite a diligent process conducted by two dedicated garden sleuths, Jan and Judy, who are both key members of the 100 year-old LFP garden club.

They receive just a few garden nominations each year. The team must actively solicit garden sites. Year-round, they keep an eye out for potential garden candidates… jotting down addresses of appealing front yards. Jan keeps a notebook in her car, explicitly for that purpose.

I am in a garden that you'll see when
you tour the Secret Garden in LFP!
Beginning in July, the “J” team begins visitations to investigate the potential of these candidate gardens.

While many of us think of gardens in terms of front or back, the Secret Garden is both, so it is essential that the sleuths view the backyard as well. A knock on the door might bring an invitation, but if no one is home, they’ll leave a note expressing interest as a potential garden candidate.

But first, they’ll garner a sneak peek for a better assessment. This might entail driving uphill to view down into the yard, or wandering around perimeters, peeking around or through holes in fences.

Judy surmises, “the neighbors must wonder” but they have never been reported. Jan laughs, “Just two old ladies…we’re harmless!”

One can wander around Lake Forest Park and spot many beautiful gardens. So, just what makes a nice yard secret-garden worthy?

Lovely front and back yards are a given, but what makes a garden really pop is something unusual or surprising. This might be a highlight such as hardscaping or water features, or small details…. perhaps an interesting rain drain, statuary, or use of artificial turf. Round a corner and you may find a little gnome or a carved bear hanging out in a tree.

I am in a garden that you'll see
when you tour the Secret Garden in LFP!
Our two garden sleuths have their own preferences, but emphasize the importance of selecting a variety of garden styles.

People vary in how they define the perfect yard: some enjoy foodscapes with an emphasis on vegetables and fruits, others prefer formal designs, and still others, natural landscapes.

Respect for individual preferences is just one way that demonstrates how consideration of the visitor experience is built into the process. The team includes checks for ease of parking, accessibility to the site, and potential safety hazards, all of which even the most fabulous garden must pass for selection.

The 2024 Secret Garden selection is now finalized and can be viewed during the Secret Garden tour on June 15, 2024.

As you visit the gardens, perhaps you might spot certain features that captivated Jan and Judy as well. And remember, the search for 2025 begins in July… feel free to nominate your own or a neighbor’s garden (info@LFPgardentour.com or fill in a form at one of this year’s garden sites).

For more information about the Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Garden Tour, click here.

Motivated by Jan and Judy’s activities and want to get involved?

We’re looking for volunteers for this year’s Secret Garden tour. No garden or plant experience needed! Contact: info@LFPgardentour.com
