Looking Back: The Linden apartment fire of 2021

Monday, April 15, 2024

A 2021 fire raged through all four stories of the Linden Highlands Apartments, trapping elderly and disabled residents inside.
On April 14, 2021, around 11:30pm, Shoreline Police Officers were dispatched to the Linden Highlands Apartments at 17520 Linden Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133 for a suspicious circumstances call. Multiple callers heard what they thought were gunshots.

The first Officers on the scene quickly realized the sound was breaking glass. An apartment fire had fully engulfed the first floor and was quickly spreading to all four stories.

Shoreline Fire was quickly on the scene but the fire had spread quickly.

Officers from Shoreline entered the apartment building and began to evacuate numerous elderly and disabled residents who could not escape their apartment units without help. Kenmore Police and Metro Transit Detectives were nearby and joined the rescue efforts.

Emergency response from all nearby fire departments.

Lake Forest Park officers came in to assist, helping some residents to evacuate the building, handing out blankets and looking after the displaced residents until the Red Cross could arrive. They prevented an intoxicated and agitated resident from re-entering the fire.

Emergency vehicles from Shoreline, Kenmore, Seattle, Lake Forest Park, Bothell, Woodinville, and Snohomish county responded to the scene.

When Shoreline Fire arrived on the scene, the Battalion Chief yelled to the Officers to get out of the building because of how quickly the fire was spreading.

Officers yelled back that there were still people trapped inside and ran back into the burning building.

Fire stayed on scene to take care of any remaining hot spots which could restart the fire.

These officers and Detectives placed their own lives in extreme danger to help save numerous residents.

Four Officers were transported to Harborview Hospital for smoke inhalation. Two Officers were admitted overnight, but thankfully, they all fully recovered and returned to full duty.

Miraculously there were no serious injuries or fatalities. If it weren't for the heroic actions of these first responders, this would not have been the same outcome. Over 45 families were displaced because of this fire.

Shoreline Fire Chief Matt Cowan wrote a letter to Shoreline Police Chief Shawn Ledford.

I know that I had the opportunity to thank many of the Officers personally at your incident debriefing on the 20th, but I felt compelled to follow that up with a letter of commendation. I listened to the incident and have discussed the call with a few different Officers that were at the fire.

It seems very clear to me that not only did the Officers go above and beyond in their duties, but that they saved lives that night. And at risk to their own lives with four of them needing to go to the hospital. The residents in the complex were very blessed that the Officers were there on a separate incident when this fire broke out otherwise this fire could have been tragic.

I do not want to minimize the damage that was done by the fire, but over the years I have seen incidents that would have resulted in far worse outcomes if it wasn’t for the actions of a few. This is one of them. Please pass along my sincere thanks to the Officers, and their Commanders for their heroic actions.

At the first meeting after the fire, Shoreline Mayor Will Hall, on behalf of the city council, said thank you to the police and firefighters who responded to the huge fire at the Linden Apartments.

"There were 16 deputies from Shoreline, Kenmore and Metro Transit who showed up and risked their own lives saving the lives of people living in those apartments. In the course of doing that, four of the police officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. We wish the best to these officers and everyone else who was affected by this fire."

Shoreline, WA to mark Education and Sharing Day, calling for renewed focus on moral and ethical education

Mayor Chris Roberts has proclaimed April 19, 2024, to be “Education and Sharing Day, Shoreline, WA”. With a growing mental health crisis and crisis of purpose among young people, Education and Sharing Day seeks to highlight the critical need for moral and ethical education.

Education and Sharing Day is a day of national commemoration that has been designated by every president beginning with Jimmy Carter in 1978, to promote and emphasize the importance of moral and ethical education.

It was championed by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the most influential Rabbi in modern history. Congress passed a joint resolution, and President Carter then signed it into law, designating the day of the Rebbe’s birthday as Education and Sharing Day.

In his correspondence with President Carter, the Rebbe laid out his vision of Education and Sharing Day as a time to focus on “Education in a broader and deeper sense — not merely as a process of imparting knowledge and training for a "better living," but for a "better life," with due emphasis on character building, and moral & ethical values.”

Each president since Carter, as well as numerous local legislatures, governors and mayors nationwide, annually recognize and proclaim Education and Sharing Day.

In President Biden’s 2022 proclamation, he expressed the impact such an education has on broader society. “The Rebbe’s work reminds us, in the words of the Prophet Amos, to “hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the gate.”
We each share a responsibility to live up to those words — in and out of the classroom — and to plant the seeds of love, kindness, and empathy in the hearts and minds of every child in America.

Everyone is encouraged to observe Education and Sharing Day through setting aside time to reflect on how to enhance the moral and ethical education of our youth and increasing in acts of goodness and kindness.

More information on the life and work of the Rebbe here

The vehicle has been returned to the owner.

LFP Police recover stolen vehicle and arrest a suspect

Stolen vehicle recovered by LFP PD in Town Center. The teenaged passenger was arrested bu the driver escaped. Photo courtesy LFP PD

Wednesday afternoon, April 10, 2024 LFP Police officers were notified of a recklessly driven vehicle on Bothell Way NE that turned into the lower LFP Mall area. The reckless vehicle was a reported stolen car from Seattle.

Within 90 seconds of dispatch, the stolen vehicle was located in front of the Rite Aid store, backed into a parking stall.

At nearly the same time, two juvenile male suspects exited the store carrying stolen bottles of alcohol.

Both suspects started to quickly flee the area. The passenger suspect of the stolen vehicle was stopped and detained by officers while the driver suspect fled into the mall. Despite a detailed search by assisting Bothell PD officers, the juvenile driver suspect was not found.

The detained suspect was positively identified by Rite Aid personnel, formally arrested, and a bottle of alcohol with a security cap still attached was located and returned to the store. The juvenile, who was also in possession of a cannabis smoking device, was identified with an ID card, and it was learned that he had just been released from juvenile custody for possessing a stolen vehicle, shoplifting, and possibly other charges.

Due to the Washington state laws regarding juveniles, the in-custody juvenile could not be questioned about the identity of his juvenile accomplice who was driving the stolen vehicle. The arrested juvenile, who will be criminally charged for theft, was processed, and was released to his parent as the juvenile justice center would not take custody.

The owner of the recovered stolen vehicle came to LFP, found the vehicle interior damaged but happily took possession of his stolen vehicle.

BEWARE: NE 185th from 5th to 8th NE across the freeway may be closed on Monday

NE 185th overpass on Saturday, April 13, 2024 showing the current traffic revisions.

By Diane Hettrick

Do you read the classified notices in The Seattle Times? I don't.

Fortunately, I have readers who do and who sent me this notice of a two week closure of NE 185th from 5th to 8th NE (at the 185th Transit Center) - starting Monday

Published in The Seattle Times classified section Saturday, April 13, 2024
Text transcribed below

No one seems to know about it except the staffer who published the notice. My primary contact at Sound Transit wasn't aware of any closure notices. The City of Shoreline didn't publish any notices - and they just recently published information about other projects and closures.

Since it's a 24 hour line, I called the phone number in the notice and talked to a nice lady who told me that she couldn't find anything - and the calls she expects to field are complaints about bright lights and noise - not major closure announcements.

I also emailed the staffer whose name is in the notice, but he has a 9-5 M-F job and may get back to me on Monday.

As many of you know, 185th east of Aurora is a major commuter route to North City and Lake Forest Park - and soon to the Shoreline North / 185th Sound Transit Station. It is one of only three east - west roads in Shoreline, with 205th and 145th, both of which have their own construction issues.

185th has been challenging enough, with the constant road reconfigurations, but at least drivers with some patience were able to get across the freeway. A complete closure with no notice is a completely different scenario.

Text of notice:

City of Shoreline. 2 week closure of NE 185th Street for Restoration Work.
As early as Monday, April 15, but no sooner than 3 days after this posting Sound Transit will be performing a full closure NE 185th Street between 5th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE as part of the implementation of the new NE 185th Street road alignment. The work includes an updated roadway, curbs and roundabout. This closure will be in place as early as Monday, April 15 through Monday, April 29.
Pedestrian and bike access will be maintained. Local access to residences will be maintained during work. Follow posted signage for access and detours. If the work is delayed a new notice will be distributed.

By Oliver Moffat

On Monday, April 15, 2024 at 7pm the Shoreline city council will be discussing the City Council Goals and Work Plan and holding a Public Hearing and Discussion of the Transportation Improvement Plan. The public can attend in person at Shoreline City Hall or virtually online. Details on attending and providing public comment are available on the city’s website.

A map from the 2025-2030 Transportation Improvement Plan shows
funded and unfunded projects across the city.

What’s new in the city’s Transportation Improvement Plan?

The city’s transportation improvement plan is updated every year and serves as a six-year roadmap for which transportation projects will be funded and which projects will not be funded.

Here’s a brief summary of what is new in this year’s transportation improvement plan compared to last year’s.

All five unfunded projects in the plan are on the east-side of town (NE 175th, NE 185th, Ballinger Way, 15th NE and 3rd NE).

A map from the city’s Transportation Impact Fee Rate Study shows
High Activity Areas to receive focused planning

What’s new in the city’s Goals and Work Plan?

Each year the council sets goals to direct the work the city does. Here are some highlights from this year’s goals that are new compared to last year’s goals.

  • The city says they will amend the tree code to “streamline administration and improve outcomes”.
  • The city will conduct focused planning on its high activity areas and neighborhood commercial centers and corridors.
  • In 2025, the city plans to build sidewalks along 8th Ave NW from Richmond Beach Road to Sunset Park and along 19th Ave NE between 196th and 205th streets in the Ballinger neighborhood.
  • The city plans to design and consider construction of new parks including Westminster Park, Rotary, West Echo Lake, 192nd/Hemlock, Edwin Pratt, South Ronald Bog and South Twin Ponds.
  • A new action was added to develop a city asset management program.
  • New parking enforcement is planned across the city.
  • The city plans to develop an “equity needs map” for analysis and to inform decision making.
  • The city will implement the recently approved Human Services Strategic Plan.
  • And new this year is a goal to enhance the city’s emergency management plans.
