FEMA test may be dangerous for victims of domestic abuse

Victims of domestic abuse may wish to make plans for October 4th.

The upcoming Nationwide Emergency Alert Test emergency test will sound through radio, television, and cell phones at 11:20am on Wednesday, October 4th.

This important warning can also be a safety risk for those who live with an abuser.

The Nationwide Emergency Alert Test will sound loudly through cell phones and may alert abusers to hidden cell phones which are given as safety tools for victims of domestic violence to report and document abuse incidents.

Some phones may allow users to turn off emergency alerts via settings. However, device users cannot turn off national alerts.

The best way to be sure any hidden phone will not make a sound on October 4th is to turn it off entirely or give it to a friend for safekeeping.

Music4Life provides donated instruments to 11 school districts for children in need

Music4Life collects donated musical instruments, has them refurbished, and donates them to school districts so children whose families can't afford rentals can still have the benefit of music. If you have an instrument to give or money to donate, see the Music4Life webpage.

SEATTLE, Washington Music4Life reports delivering 258 full-sized ready-to-play musical instruments during the 2022-23 school year to its 11 participating public school districts.

The instruments are free-of-charge and intended for use by the students of families in-need.

Also provided were 1,375 recorders (the little flute-like instrument that sticks straight out of the mouth) for use by third- and fourth-graders in the Link-Up program with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

The youngsters get their recorders in the fall, learn to play them and are then invited to Benaroya Hall to play the instruments with the Seattle Symphony.

“The total value of instruments provided is $126,923 as determined by our independent vendor/repair experts,” says Music4Life C-Founder / CEO David Endicott.
“Need” is often demonstrated by a family’s participation in free-or-reduced lunch programs and determined at the teacher level, he adds.

Research shows that students who participate in school instrumental music activities do better in math, science, history, literature, international languages, reading and writing, even in computer science, in addition to what it teaches in terms of teamwork and self-discipline.

Not all children want to participate in instrumental music activities, of course.

“But for those who do and whose families cannot afford a musical instrument,” Endicott says, “they are effectively barred from getting the full basic education guaranteed to them by the Washington State Constitution.
"And the sad fact is that, in today’s pandemic-recovering economy, many families cannot even afford to rent a musical instrument. So Music4Life is just as much an education program as it is an instrumental music program.”
During this fiscal school year, Music4Life delivered ready-to-play musical instruments to Auburn, Bremerton, Edmonds, Everett, Highline, Kent, Marysville, Northshore, Riverview, Seattle and Shoreline Public Schools.

Several new public school districts are being considered and others are welcome to apply.

Ready-to-play musical instruments are provided to qualified students in these districts as long as they stay enrolled in that public school district.

“We figure that the more they use the instruments, the better they’ll get,” Endicott says. “If they leave the school district for any reason, such as graduation or the family moves, the instrument needs to be returned to the school district so another student of a family in-need can benefit from its use.”

Each instrument has a remaining useful life of three-to-15 years, meaning that multiple students may benefit from its use.

“Local enthusiasts who share our values of service to ‘kids,’ ‘instrumental music’ or ‘education’ are welcome to join one of our local Chapters,” Endicott says.

They are a part of the network of feeding programs across the county.

The feeding ministry prepares about 400 meals a week and has prepared over 130,000 since 2012 when they began by taking food to Tent City 3. The indoors community began in late 2014.

Woodway Town Council to hold public hearing on Point Wells Monday October 2, 2023

Point Wells is at sea level. Town of Woodway is on the cliff above

Point Wells Public Hearing Monday October 2, 2023 6:00pm at Town Hall 23920 113th Pl W, Woodway, WA 98020

Since 1999, with the Town Council’s creation of the Point Wells Advisory Committee, the Town has been planning for the potential annexation of Point Wells.

Last October, Council directed staff to focus more intentionally on gathering information and identifying options that would provide Council with the ability to thoughtfully consider an annexation in 2023.

This has included information on public opinion, financial considerations, potential Town liability and legal risks, and options to complete an annexation. At each Council meeting since January, staff has provided Council and the public with updates on these topics, and Council has provided residents with an opportunity to comment.

The Town has engaged the property owner regarding their vision for Point Wells, as well as the Town’s potential annexation of the site.

Simultaneously, we have engaged Snohomish County, the City of Shoreline, and Olympic View Water and Sewer District in negotiations on an interlocal agreement (ILA) that would provide the Town with the option of annexing Point Wells under RCW 35A.14.296.

The statute provides a process through which the Town can complete the annexation of Point Wells by mutual agreement, without the property owner’s consent.

Negotiations with our government partners are now complete. As a result, Council will hold a public hearing on the ILA on October 2, 2023 at 6pm.

You can find a copy of the draft ILA and additional information related to annexation on the Point Wells page of the Town’s website

Testimony is being accepted in person at the public hearing or by submitting written comment. Written comments must be submitted to at heidi@townofwoodway.com no later than 4:00pm PST on October 2, 2023.

After hearing from the public at the meeting, Council will consider a resolution that authorizes Mayor Quinn to sign the ILA and to submit a “Notice of Intent” to annex Point Wells to the Snohomish County Boundary Review Board.

If the Board authorizes the annexation, final approval of an annexation would not occur until Council holds another public hearing and approves an annexation ordinance.

If you have any questions or comments (other than written comments for the public hearing), or if you’re unable to attend the Council meeting, please feel free to email Mayor Mike Quinn at mquinn@townofwoodway.com. Also, please feel free to check out our Point Wells Q/A, located on the Point Wells webpage.

--Town of Woodway Mayor Mike Quinn

HomeTechHacker: Smart Home Energy Efficiency - How to Save Money and Conserve Energy

Solar panels
By Marlon Buchanan

As technology continues to evolve, so does our ability to optimize and improve the way we use energy in our homes.

The rise of smart home devices has paved the way for more efficient energy consumption, empowering homeowners to save money and contribute to a sustainable future.

Let’s discuss smart home energy efficiency, and delve into practical ways to conserve energy and reduce costs.

What is Smart Home Energy Efficiency?

Smart home energy efficiency refers to the integration of intelligent devices and systems that help homeowners monitor, manage, and reduce their energy consumption. These devices are equipped with sensors, automation capabilities, and connectivity to the internet, allowing users to control and regulate various aspects of their home energy usage remotely. From thermostats and lighting to appliances and entertainment systems, smart technologies are changing how we interact with energy in our homes.

Ecobee thermostat
Smart Thermostats

One of the most impactful smart devices for energy efficiency is the smart thermostat.

Unlike conventional thermostats, which require manual adjustments, smart thermostats learn from user behavior and adjust temperature settings accordingly.

They can also be remotely controlled through smartphone apps, so homeowners can optimize heating and cooling even when they are away.

By programming the thermostat to lower temperatures when nobody is home or during sleeping hours, substantial energy savings can be achieved.

I do this with my Ecobee thermostat.

Energy-Efficient Lighting

Smart lighting solutions, such as LED bulbs and smart switches, significantly reduce energy consumption compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.

Smart lighting systems can be scheduled to turn on and off at specific times, dimmed when full brightness is unnecessary, or even respond to motion sensors. The ability to control lights remotely and set customized lighting scenes adds an extra layer of convenience while saving energy.

Energy monitor
Energy Monitoring Devices

For a comprehensive understanding of energy usage patterns, homeowners can employ smart energy monitoring devices.

These devices track the energy consumption of individual appliances and provide real-time data through smartphone apps.

Armed with this knowledge, users can identify energy hogs and make informed decisions about usage, leading to more efficient energy consumption.

Smart Appliances

Modern smart appliances, such as refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers, are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Many of them are Energy Star certified, meaning they meet rigorous energy efficiency standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Smart appliances can be programmed to run during off-peak hours, when electricity rates are typically lower, further reducing energy costs.

Home Automation

Integrating smart home devices into a centralized automation system allows homeowners to create energy-saving routines. For example, you can automate the process of turning off lights, adjusting thermostat settings, and powering down electronic devices when leaving the house.

This not only saves energy but also adds an extra layer of security and convenience.

Renewable Energy Integration
