‘A Witch’s Gift’ Opens at Graphite Arts Center in Edmonds

A Witch's Gift

‘A Witch’s Gift’ Opens at Graphite Arts Center
Artist Reception Thursday, September 21, 5 - 8pm
Open Saturdays, September 23 - October 28, 12 - 4pm

After two months of in-house work constructing the flora and fauna, and creating the critters and creatures for the fantastical, full-scale exhibit A Witch’s Gift, the immersive experience at The Gallery at Graphite opens to the public.

A Witch’s Gift is the work of artist Perry Jakobs who has worked in residency at Graphite since July 2023. Jakobs is an imaginative, hardworking, cheerful artist with a unique vision for storytelling. Through this installation exhibit Jakobs has succeeded in fashioning their imaginative fantasy world into life size elements both real and created.

A Witch’s Gift is a full-gallery installation complete with a fully decorated, life-size antique bedroom; an ancient apothecary; a pastel colored, mushroom-filled forest, and much more.

Jakobs has described the project as a theatrical, narrative experience – “a whimsical, bubbly dreamscape! ...with an undertone of melancholy.”

Apothecary shop

The concept for A Witch’s Gift is an original story written by Jakobs, in collaboration with their brother Noel Hansen. In the tale, a young girl finds herself in a world where she does not quite fit in. Through hard work, and a personal exploration of how to truly apply her unique talents, the youthful protagonist learns she can make this world a better place for all.

The handmade book with the complete written tale is part of the exhibit.

The Graphite Arts Center is proud to be able to feature Jakobs and their work. Visitors are invited to meet the artist most Saturdays and join them for a walk through of the exhibit.

City of Shoreline survey on ground floor commercial regulations

Wednesday, September 20, 2023

The Shoreline City Council recently passed interim regulations requiring space for commercial uses on the ground floors of new residential apartment buildings.

One of the main reasons for requiring commercial space in residential buildings is to support local economic activity and create neighborhood centers and corridors that serve residents.

As the Planning Commission and Council study this issue and consider making these regulations permanent, we'd like to hear from residents and business owners.

Meanwhile, in the Arctic...

Decorated wooden boats will provide information about ocean currents

U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker Healy crew members, researchers, and members of the Norwegian Coast Guard and Royal Navy decorated wooden boats for the International Arctic Buoy Program’s “Float Your Boat” educational outreach project on September 13, 2023.

Starting its voyage on the Arctic ice

Each boat has a unique serial number to be entered into an online form (along with its coordinates) at ‘floatboat.org” by anyone who finds it.

The information is used to collect data about ocean currents. Members onboard Healy deployed over 300 of these boats in the Arctic Ocean on this year’s voyage alone; and thousands have participated in this program starting in 2015.

To learn more about this program or report a found boat, visit floatboat.org.

The Healy is homeported in Puget Sound and is often seen from Shoreline.

Change the world, child by child - Volunteer as a Roots of Empathy instructor

Have you been wondering how you can give back to the Shoreline community? Have you ever considered becoming a Roots of Empathy Instructor?

Several Shoreline elementary schools are in need of volunteers who are willing to train as Roots of Empathy Instructors for the upcoming school year.

Applications are currently being accepted and training dates are scheduled for October 9-11, 2023.

What is Roots of Empathy?

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that fosters empathy in children, now entering its 17th year of partnership with elementary schools in the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park area.

Empathy enables children to build healthy relationships, reduces bullying and aggression, and contributes to their well-being.

We are in need of a few more people who are willing to give time to children and watch them evolve over the school year as they observe “their” baby grow.

Want to see what Roots of Empathy looks like?
  • Click to view a recent BBC World Hacks feature on the Roots of Empathy program that explains how Roots of Empathy works and why a baby is such a powerful teacher of empathy.
  • You can also take a peek at this Q13 segment that was filmed in a Meridian Park Elementary class in 2020.
  • Finally, learn more about what being an Instructor means here.
Please reach out to Angelica Friedmann, Program Manager, at afriedmann@rootsofempathy.org if you’re interested in joining Roots of Empathy in changing the world, child by child.

Surprise fireworks show startles central Puget Sound residents

This is our fireworks show

By Diane Hettrick

At first people thought it was thunder, but it went on too long.

Around 9:30pm on Saturday night, September 16, 2023, the noise started. Some recognized it as fireworks immediately, but others were confused.  New Year's Eve and the 4th of July are typical occasions for fireworks and there is usually some warning for local festivals.

It went on for 45 minutes, while dogs cowered and retired soldiers dealt with their PTSD.

Every westside neighborhood was treated to the noise and some areas by Lake Washington could also hear the explosions.

As it turned out, it was a private show from a barge moored off the south end of Bainbridge Island. The only announcement was from the Bainbridge Island fire department two days before

The display was located outside of Bainbridge Island’s jurisdictional area and is under the jurisdiction of the United States Coast Guard.

This event is similar to a display held last year. The commercial operator, retained by a private entity for the event, holds a General Display Fireworks License and Pyrotechnic Operator License issued by the Fire Protection Bureau of the Washington State Patrol.

Appropriate permits have been issued by the Seattle Fire Department for the loading of fireworks and with U.S. Coast Guard approval for a Marine Event. No additional permits are required.

You can expect noise associated with commercial fireworks that evening beginning around 9:30pm. Please do not call 911 with any complaints. Let's keep those lines open for emergency reporting.

If you could see it, it was a spectacular display. The West Seattle Blog followed the story as it was happening and published a photo of the display - well worth checking out. (article here)

The fireworks company is not divulging the name of their client, just that it is a private party. Nor are they sharing the occasion. It could be a birthday or Mexican Independence Day which was on the 16th and is celebrated with fireworks. Either way, it was a private celebration which went noisily public, shared with thousands of people.

WSP investigating two collisions involving three fatalities in one night

A double fatality in Bothell caused by a wrong way driver
Graphic courtesy WSP

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is investigating two collisions that occurred in King County on Saturday, September 16, 2023 involving three individuals that lost their lives.

The first collision occurred EB SR 516 near Meeker St. in Kent, Washington at approximately 9:05pm.

Kent: A vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and went to pass another vehicle when it went out of control and slid sideways into a ditch. The vehicle flipped, struck a metal pole and ended up coming to rest on its top. Sadly, the 20 year old male driver who was the sole occupant was ejected and did not survive. This collision is still under investigation at this time.

Bothell: The second collision occurred around 2:05am SB I-405 north of 160th in Bothell.

A 48 year old female was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-405 when she struck another vehicle that was traveling in the correct direction, driver by a 32 year old Bellevue resident.

Unfortunately neither driver survived. A passenger in the vehicle traveling in the correct direction survived and was transported to the hospital. This collision is also still under investigation.

WSP District 2 public information officer Rick Johnson has a message for the public:

These are both very tragic events as any loss of life is one too many. These two collisions are still under investigation to determine if any type of impairment was involved.
The Washington State Patrol wants to stress the fact that speed and impairment are contributing factors in many collisions and pleads with drivers to make safe and good decisions before getting behind the wheel.

The roadway was blocked for over five hours.
