Campaign season reminder – Rules for political signs in Lake Forest Park

Saturday, August 26, 2023

During this campaign season, the City of Lake Forest Park would like to remind the community about the rules for political signs:

Political signs may be placed on public rights-of-way or on private property with permission of the owner.

However, they must be situated in such a way as to not create a traffic or safety hazard.
All political signs must be removed within five days following the election.

According to RCW 29A.84.040

“A person who removes or defaces lawfully placed political advertising including yard signs or billboards without authorization is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable to the same extent as a misdemeanor that is punishable under RCW 9A.20.021. The defacement or removal of each item constitutes a separate violation.”

The LFP Police Department patrol officers are aware of these regulations and are keeping an eye out for violators.

WeatherWatcher: Heat Advisory in effect from noon Saturday until 8pm PDT Sunday

Smoky sunset from Richmond Beach July 4, 2023

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a Heat Advisory in effect from noon Saturday until 8pm PDT Sunday.

From the National Weather Service:
  • What: Hot conditions with temperatures of 85 to 95 degrees expected away from the water. This will pose a moderate risk of heat-related illness.
  • Where: Portions of northwest and west central Washington.
  • When: From noon Saturday to 8pm PDT Sunday.
  • Impacts: Heat will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses for those who are sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration.
  • Additional Details: When heat and poor air quality occur at the same time, use air conditioning and air filtration if possible. If you do not have access to air conditioning, it may not be safe to stay inside with doors and windows closed when it's hot outside. When heat and poor air quality occur at the same time, cooling should be prioritized.
Forecast: For the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park areas, we are expecting high temperatures to reach the mid 80's both Saturday and Sunday. We are also expecting hazy and smoky conditions both days from mainly Canadian wildfires. Lows will be in the upper 50's to low 60's in the evenings.

Smoke is expected to degrade air quality to levels not quite as bad as last weekend but will make it at least to the unhealthy range for sensitive groups. If the thunderstorms that moved through the mountains and across the Olympia and Tacoma areas sparked any new fires, we could see more smoke than currently expected.
Air Quality at the Lake Forest Park Town Center
Data and graph from Puget Sound Clean Air Agency

On-shore breeze is expected to kick in Sunday afternoon and evening, helping to clear the smoke out of the region going into Monday.

We have more chances of showers and thundershowers next week around Tuesday through Thursday.

We'll have to keep a watch on the forecast to see what could develop.

Sunset on Thursday, August 24, 2023 and the mountains are gone again. I'm going to have to start following Canadian wildfire reports. For a long time, British Columbia had few large wildfires. Now that they are reporting some large fires, we are getting smoke in Puget Sound. Coincidence? I think not.

WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse says "Smoke expected to last through the weekend. Thunderstorms possible tomorrow morning through afternoon."

With more than 500 trees plus thousands of plants making their way to the waterfront - they'll need a safe and stable place to grow and that sounds like a perfect job for soil cells!

Soil cells provide trees and plants with suitable conditions to grow healthy roots while also protecting urban infrastructure from tree root damage.

Volunteering at the huge, free Seattle / King County annual clinic is a rewarding experience

By Doug Cerretti

The Seattle/King County Clinic (SKCC) has released its final report for 2023.

This was the first full clinic where patients received medical, dental and vision care since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SKCC took place over four days, April 27 – 30, 2023, at Seattle Center where a wide range of clinical services were offered, free of cost, on a first-come, first-served basis to 3,066 individuals.

1073 patients received eye glasses

See our previous article on the clinic.

1,609 patients received dental care, 1,289 patients received medical care and 1,032 patients received vision care.

All of this was accomplished with the commitment of 3,952 volunteers during the four-day clinic and more than 565 volunteers who assisted with preparation and wrap-up activities, generating over 44,020 work hours.

See the full report here

The 2024 Seattle/King County Clinic has been scheduled for Thursday, February 15 to Sunday, February 18 at Seattle Center!

Please consider volunteering for SKCC. People with medical experience or certification is a plus, however, there are many volunteer positions that do not require medical training such as computer knowledge that you have gained at work or home, escorting patients from station to station, checking in volunteers each day, maintaining the volunteer break room, filing papers and many more positions.

There is a large demand for interrupters if you have multi-language abilities. Thus, if you wish to volunteer, there are many ways you can help. Volunteering at SKCC is very rewarding. Go to this link for information on volunteering

NEMCo participation in National Night Out celebrations

NEMCo volunteers at Kenmore's NNO event

By Katrina Rose – NEMCo Steering Committee Member

National Night Out Against Crime is celebrated in many ways across the country on the first Tuesday in August.

The Cities of Kenmore and Lake Forest Park (LFP) each had different ways of celebrating this year, but both invited the Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo) to educate the community and encourage citizens to join our serious but fun events.

For the LFP celebration there were about 40 community gatherings in local neighborhoods which were visited by LFP Police and Shoreline Fire Department.

These neighborhood ‘block parties’ offered an opportunity for the community to meet its members as well as its emergency services personnel.

NEMCo had three teams of two who were able to ride along with LFP Police to about 14 of these gatherings.

NEMCo volunteers shared information with over 250 people at NNO events

Kenmore had their celebration on Wednesday, in conjunction with its Farmer's Market, where NEMCo joined in the busy event by setting up a booth staffed with volunteers.

For both celebrations NEMCo volunteers were able to chat with, educate, and discuss NEMCo's mission and activities with residents.

In total, volunteers answered questions and distributed information on NEMCo programs as well as general disaster preparedness to over 250 people.

Remember to mark your calendars for the first Tuesday and Wednesday in August 2024 so you can volunteer at or participate in these important and fun community events.

For more information on NEMCo and disaster preparedness, visit our website at NorthshoreEMC.com.

International Community Health Services (ICHS) will host a one-day childhood immunization clinic for Shoreline-area students at ICHS’ Shoreline Medical and Dental Clinic on Tuesday August 29, 2023 from 10:00am – 3:00pm.

Organized in partnership with Parkwood Elementary school, the ‘one-stop shop’ clinic will offer school required immunizations (e.g. MMR, Varicella, tetanus, Hepatitis B, and polio vaccines) as well as other routine vaccines such as HPV and meningococcal.

"As medical providers and parents, we know that keeping up to date on immunizations are vital to keep our families healthy," said Lakshimi Deepa Yerram, ICHS Chief Medical Officer.
"In fact, vaccines have saved more lives than any other medical intervention."

Parents must be present with their children (age 17 and under). Families should bring their insurance information, however if you are uninsured there will be no cost for immunizations. If you have vaccination records from another country or state, please bring them with you.

Appointments are required at this sign-up form. Language interpretation services will be available. Members of ICHS’ community access services team will be in attendance to assist in health insurance enrollment and accessing housing, employment, and childcare resources.

The clinic will be closed between 12:00pm – 1:00pm for lunch. ICHS’ Shoreline Medical and Dental Clinic is located at 16549 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133. The clinic is accessible off HWY 99 with convenient lot parking for patients and visitors and is near bus lines. Check King County’s Metro Trip Planner to learn which buses will get you to the clinic.

ICHS was recognized this month by Immunize Washington for its part in reducing the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and keeping our communities safe. In order to expand access to childhood immunizations, ICHS has been hosting mobile clinics in partnership with schools across the Seattle region.

Please call Danna Nunez Fernandez, ICHS Community Access Specialist at 206-462-7168 if you have any questions.

CORRECTION: Elections: Final primary results for Shoreline, LFP, Kenmore, Port of Seattle

King county has certified the primary election, and as expected, there were no changes from the early results.

Shoreline School Board
  • Sylvia Gil 8,153
  • Hazim Ghanim 3,558
  • Zack Stallings 2,994
Sylvia Gil was a runaway favorite for the open Shoreline School Board position, pulling 50% of the vote. She will meet Hazim Ghanim in November. Third place Zack Stallings has thrown his support to Ghanim but their combined vote total is still far below Gil.

The other positions are uncontested, giving Meghan Jernigan and Sara Betnel an additional term.

City of Lake Forest Park
Council Position 6
  • Paula Goode 1,974
  • Stephanie Angelis 963
  • Dustin Shaffer 842
Paula Goode took 52% of the vote in the primary and will be faced by Stephanie Angelis for the open seat now held by Tom French.

In other LFP races,
  • Lorri Bodi is unopposed for Council Position 2 and will continue in her position.
  • Nigel Keiffer and Ellyn Saunders will vie for the open seat for Council Position 4, now held by Phillippa Kassover, who is retiring.
  • Tom French is running against Jeff Johnson for Mayor.

City of Shoreline

The Shoreline council had no races in the primary. In fact neither Keith Scully nor Betsy Robertson have opponents, so have effectively been re-elected to their seats on the council.

Long time council member Doris McConnell is being challenged by Annette Adamasu.

Shoreline Fire Commissioners
David Harris is unopposed.
Barb Sullivan and Larry Hadland will compete for a position in November.

Port of Seattle
Commissioner Position No. 5
Fred Felleman, who received 56% of the vote will face Jesse Tam.

Seeking volunteers for Ballinger Neighborhood’s 3rd Annual Friendship Festival

Friendship Festival September 9, 2023 Brugger’s Bog Park 1:00pm – 5:00pm

Ballinger Neighborhood’s 3rd Annual Friendship Festival at Brugger’s Bog Park is coming soon! Save the date, mark your calendars and plan to spend an afternoon with your friends and family.

The music is incredible and free! So are the food, crafts and games. Bring your lawn chair, a blanket and some sunscreen. We’ll have hot buttered corn on the cob, plenty of bottled water, ice cold slushies, and more.

Featured performers include JHP Legacy, Filipiniana / FACES Dance Company, Peter Ali (Indigenous flutist), and Janet Rayor (Stilt Dancer).

Volunteering is a great way to enjoy the entertainment while helping at the event. We are especially seeking volunteers to help with kid’s crafts and games. All crafts are sustainable (using upcycled or recycled items) and the games are friendly old-fashioned fun.

Of course, we can always use help with set-up and clean-up, too. To help, sign up here, email us at ballingerneighborhood@gmail.com or contact Londa at 206-437-9118 to learn more.

Ballinger Neighborhood is privileged to count among its diverse friends and neighbors, a richness of world cultures. Through the multicultural sharing of music, food, and friendly conversation we grow in understanding and respect for one another. Come and share, learn something new, and make a new friend or two!

Brought to you by Ballinger Neighborhood Association with funding from the City of Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-Grant program. For more information on the festival, visit www.balna.org
