Secure pathways available for Washington residents to donate to Maui wildfire relief

Maui photo courtesy WA Secretary of State

OLYMPIA — A secure portal operated by the Office of Secretary of State provides all Washington residents, public employees, and state retirees a one-stop way to donate to Maui relief efforts.

The Disaster Relief Center, a special project of the Secretary of State’s Combined Fund Drive charity fundraising program, provides links for one-time donations by credit cards or, for state and other public employees, payroll or retirement deductions to benefit each donor’s choice of verified relief organizations aiding Maui residents, first responders, healthcare efforts, and more.

More than 110 people have been killed and hundreds more are missing due to the devastating August wildfires across Maui, which demolished the historic town of Lahaina and destroyed more than 2,000 homes, businesses, and other buildings.

“The disaster that has affected so much of Maui has astonished and saddened people throughout Washington,” Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said. “There is a deep desire to help, and this secure donations portal provides a pathway for Washingtonians’ generosity to benefit causes that are on the ground and doing good work.”

The Disaster Relief Center website, accessible here, aids crisis-relief charities during periods of natural or humanitarian disasters that exceed a region’s capacity to provide help. The website has previously been used for donations to organizations that work with the victims of mass shootings and international aid groups responding to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Shoreline City Manager seeks volunteers to be community representatives in police use of deadly force investigations

State law (RCW 10.114.011) requires that an independent investigation team (IIT) investigate any use of deadly force by a police officer. IITs consist of law enforcement investigators and at least two non-law enforcement community representatives.

The City of Shoreline is seeking volunteers to place on a roster of potential non-law enforcement community representatives who could serve on an IIT.

In 2020, Shoreline’s City Manager appointed ten individuals to a roster of potential Community Representatives. There are currently four vacancies on the roster. The following are the minimum qualifications for the Community Representatives.

At the time of application, the applicant will:
  1. be a Shoreline resident
  2. agree to sign a confidentiality agreement with each investigation
  3. meet the time and commitment required of an IIT community representative
  4. be willing to submit to a background and conflict of interest check prior to serving on an IIT.

If you are interested in applying to be a volunteer non-law enforcement community representative, please fill out the online application by 4:30pm on Friday, September 15, 2023.

An IIT consists of certified law enforcement investigators and at least two non-law enforcement community representatives. The IIT conducts its investigation independently of any agency involved in the incident. The IIT will conduct the investigation in the same manner as a criminal investigation. The non-law enforcement community representatives are vital links between the IIT, the community, and the investigation. The goal is to enhance accountability and increase trust between law enforcement and the community.

Sound Transit is gracious but Lake Forest Park residents are not impressed with response to concerns

Standing room only for Lake Forest Park meeting with Sound Transit
By Diane Hettrick

On Wednesday August 2, 2023, Sound Transit's Stride project team held an informational community meeting regarding plans for the S3 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line along SR 522 / Bothell Way through Lake Forest Park.

The meeting was preceded by a rally held by the Tree Coalition

A 400+ standing room only crowd filled the gym at Lake Forest Park Elementary School to hear what the Sound Transit team had to say.

Sound Transit plans to build a dedicated bus lane, which they estimate will save commuters 15 minutes on their way to the Lynnwood Link 148th light rail station.

The new bus lane will save an estimated 15 minutes on the commute to the 148th Link station

The new 1.2-mile, dedicated eastbound bus lane through Lake Forest Park will take property on both sides of the road, including an estimated 400 mature trees, and necessitate a two-story concrete retaining wall to hold back the hillside.

People with driveways on the highway will have to back out onto a highway lane, instead of a shoulder.

Not surprising that in tree-loving Lake Forest Park, there has been a significant amount of push-back to these plans, including suggestions on alternatives to a new lane, such as the queue-jumps Sound Transit plans for 145th.

CEO Julie Timms and Bernard Van De Kamp - Program Executive

Bernard Van De Kamp, the program executive, gave an overview of the project, with the goal of showing how Sound Transit had incorporated community feedback since the project was approved by voters in 2016, clarifying issues related to tree impacts, queue jumps, station size, retaining walls, and noise and environmental impacts.

There were many comments from residents

The focus of the crowd was the new CEO, Julie Timm. The well-informed and knowledgeable crowd had many questions which Timm frequently stepped in to answer.

At the end, there appeared to be no change in positions. LFP doesn't want a concrete corridor the length of their city. CEO Timm, while sympathetic to the pain, has a mandate to improve transportation options into the future.

LFP Councilmember Lorri Bodi made a statement to the crowd. Councilmembers are petitioning WSDOT to reduce the width of the bus lane and make the height of the wall slightly less (see letter). Photo by Mike Remarcke

CEO Timm was graceful and understanding of the concerns, of yards being reduced and trees being lost, but she stood firm in the belief that the regional need to move people was more important than the objections of locals in the fight against progress.

In October 2023, there will be a series of 90% design informational sessions along the entire S3 line. If you have any questions about this process, you can contact the project team at brt@soundtransit.org.

Voters renew Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy

Passed with a 71% approval

With a decisive victory in the Primary election, the Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) is renewed for a fourth time, continuing the investments of the six-year levy first approved in 2005.

Over 71% of King County voters approved the VSHSL, the highest approval rating in the levy’s history, solidifying that the community understands the importance of the programs and services that support our region’s veterans, seniors, and resilient communities.

The initiative helps people and families transition to affordable housing, get job training, find employment, access emergency financial assistance, obtain domestic violence advocacy, receive behavioral health treatment, and provides other resources and services.

“The voters' approval of the Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy builds on nearly two decades of work and progress and will ensure sustained programming, vital investments, and greater coordination among nation-leading service providers,” said Executive Constantine.
“The levy plays a critical role in supporting the people and programs that help our communities thrive, and together we will improve the quality of life for so many across King County.”

Shoreline Veterans Association at Shoreline Farmers Market this Saturday

Thursday, August 17, 2023

Shoreline Veterans Plaza

By Doug Cerretti

The Shoreline Veterans Association (SVA) will again have a booth at the Shoreline Farmers Market this Saturday August 19, 2023 from 10:00am to 2:00pm to showcase the Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza.

Sample engraved bricks will be displayed and orders taken to honor Veterans and questions answered about the Plaza and the Shoreline Veterans Association. Engraved bricks to honor veterans can be obtained for a donation of $100 which is tax-deductible.

We recently received a notable engraved brick order at the dedication of a memorial bench for Dwight Stevens at Echo Lake Park. Dwight was one of the founders of the Veterans Recognition Plaza (see previous article),

King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski, Tiffany Bothell and Doug Cerretti.

King County Councilman Rod Dembowski met Tiffany Bothell, a US Army and Iraqi War veteran. Tiffany has been a long-time chaplain for Shoreline Post 227 of The American Legion and recently became the Commander of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 3348 in Shoreline.

Rod was so taken by Tiffany’s service that he gifted her $100 for an engraved brick to honor her service to our country. Tiffany was so surprised and thanked Rod immensely. It was a wonderful moment.

We expect to send an engraved brick order to the manufacturer soon after our third Saturday at the Shoreline Farmers Market on September 2. Engraved bricks should be installed at the Plaza by the beginning of next year if not before.

The Shoreline Farmers Market is located at Shoreline Park / Ride, 18821 Aurora Ave N (N 192nd St and Aurora Ave N). It is held every Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

The Plaza recognizes past, current and future veterans (those on active duty) and is located on the northside of Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Bricks can be purchased online from  The American Legion Post 227’s webpage or you can print out the order form, fill it out and mail it in with your check or credit card number. Purchases are tax deductible as the Shoreline Veterans Association is a 501 (c) 19 non-profit.

Rotary Club of LFP hosts LFP PD Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman

Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman
Story and photos by Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman with the Lake Forest Park Police Department, smiled and joked as she gave the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park a glimpse of her personal history at their recent meeting.

Raised by her father, she grew up in this region and attended several local schools.

It was after her first child was born that she fulfilled her lifelong dream of attending and graduating from the police academy.

It's heartwarming to know that, near retirement after 30 years of policing, Lt. Lehman has not lost her feminine charm or delightful sense of humor.

In fact, one sees that she has had a strong influence in giving the LFP Force a more personable presence in our community.
Lieutenance Lehman and Chief Mike Hardan

Criminals are dealt with in our city but, "Just like a doctor serves the public, so do the police," she affirms. "The citizens of LFP are our customers."

Congratulations on a long and successful career and best wishes Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman! Thanks for sharing with us today - and glad you slipped in that little story about the Chief.

Now it is closed because of wildfires.

Due to the Sourdough Fire and now a second wildfire called the Blue Lake Fire near Washington Pass, SR 20 North Cascades Highway is now closed between Newhalem (milepost 120) and the Silver Star Campground (milepost 171, where it normally closes for the winter on the east side).

These are two active wildfires burning along the highway. There is no recreation allowed anywhere between the two closure points. At this time there is no ETA for reopening.

Please do not disregard closures, they are in place for your safety and the safety of crews.

LFP Councilmembers request speed reduction on Bothell Way

A two story concrete wall the length of Lake Forest Park under Sound Transit plan

Five of the six city councilmembers in Lake Forest Park have sent a letter to the Regional Administrator of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), asking for a speed reduction on Bothell Way / SR 522, which runs the entire length of Lake Forest Park.

8-14-2023

Brian Nielsen
Regional Administrator, Northwest Region
WA State Department of Transportation

Lake Forest Park City Council formally requested our administration to apply for a speed reduction on State Route 522 at our August 10th meeting. This letter is in full support of a speed reduction. In addition to the important information in Resolution 23-1910 we want to encourage WSDOT take into consideration additional information that has been identified by our community.

We are at a point in time where Sound Transit is nearing completion of their redesign of State Highway 522 to accommodate their Stride project. Their project widens 522 to add a North/East bound transit lane and sidewalks. The final configuration of the roadway will be very similar to 522 in Kenmore where, after a recent speed review, WSDOT reduced the speed to 35MPH.

The most impactful element in the Sound Transit design that WSDOT can have a positive impact on is the two-story retaining wall. The City has been working with both Sound Transit and WSDOT to improve the visual design of this wall through tree relief patterns and vines pockets along the wall. While we support these efforts, the wall will still be a large shift from a green corridor to a concrete corridor.

Reducing the speed limit to 35MPH allows a reduction in lane width from 11’ to 10’. This would yield a narrower road profile overall by approximately 4’ and consequently reduce the amount of hillside that needs to be excavated. This would reduce the height of the retaining wall by approximately 3’ (approximately 19% lower).

A lower retaining wall lessens the visual impacts in our community, reduces the quantity of soil being trucked offsite, shortens the excavation schedule, saves additional trees, reduces acquisition extents, and reduces costs.

In addition, the reduction of the speed limit would make living in the single-family homes along SR 522 safer. While these driveways are typically considered low volume and do not generally contribute to lowering speeds, these residents are at high risk as they back into the highway instead of the shoulders they have now and should be considered as part of the speed limit review.

We entreat WSDOT to reconsider the speed limit of State Highway 522 through Lake Forest Park as this is a win for WSDOT, Sound Transit, and our community.

Kindly, in our individual capacities,

Councilmember Semra Riddle
Councilmember Larry Goldman
Councilmember Tom French, Deputy Mayor
Councilmember Phillippa Kassover, Vice Chair
Councilmember Tracy Furutani
Councilmember Lorri Bodi

However $535 remains to be raised so all clients who wish to go can go. A deadline for camp enrollment fees is approaching.

Opened in 1971 as a home for six developmentally disabled children, Banchero now serves 35 intellectually or developmentally disabled adults, all with diagnosed secondary diagnoses or disabilities.

“We are really fortunate Camp Stand by Me is availing us this opportunity, and our clients are excited about going,” says Carol Salter, Executive Director of Banchero, “but we want to send all who want to go, and we haven’t yet raised enough for everyone.

"Our community has been fantastic in supporting clients and caregivers, but we didn’t anticipate this opportunity when budgeting for 2023, which is why we are asking for community support.”

Banchero fills a service gap in the community while also offering unique services to equip clients with tools to become more independent in their own apartments. Many agencies with similar missions to Banchero do not specialize in adult services or independent living.

Special trips, events and opportunities in Shoreline and north Seattle diminished to nearly nothing with the onset of COVID. Emergence from the pandemic and its after-effects has been slow and steady.

“Summer camp is another step to return to normalcy while also giving our people a chance to have a great summer experience for the first time in four years,” said Mark Johnson, Fundraising Manager.

Proposed bus routes to light rail stations - take the survey by August 27, 2023

Lynnwood Link light rail stations will open in Shoreline in 2024. So - how are you going to get to the stations?

King County Metro and Sound Transit want to hear your feedback about proposed service and routes. They made changes based on our feedback to the first plan.

Help finalize the bus routes by taking this survey by August 27.

Shoreline / Lake Forest Park / Kenmore / Woodway will have access to three local stations: 148th, 185th, and Mountlake Terrace. Parking garages are being built at each location, but bus will be more relieable and certainly cheaper than paying for parking.

As Link light rail extends to Lynnwood, the Lynnwood Link Connections mobility project will address changing transit needs and improve mobility options for communities in northwest King County and southwest Snohomish County.

Metro is working with Sound Transit and Community Transit, among other partners, to coordinate bus routes based on feedback from communities.

Visit  Lynnwood Link Connections  to learn more about the potential bus route changes, take the  survey and register for an upcoming online open house.

Translated survey is available in the following languages:  ኣማርኛ | 简体中文 | 繁體字 | 日本語 | 한국어 | Русский | Soomaali | Español | Tagalog | Tiếng Việt
