Shoreline Park gardening party
Sunday, August 27, 2023 from 10am to noon

Sara Cammeresi reports that at previous gardening events in Shoreline Park they have removed a lot of invasive blackberry and ivy.

Now they really need some volunteers to help move arborist wood chips to mulch those areas!

They can provide gloves and some tools, but would welcome another sturdy wheelbarrow and mulch-moving shovels or forks.

Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) receives thousands of unique artifacts from estate of Paul G. Allen

SEATTLE – MoPOP, the acclaimed nonprofit Museum of Pop Culture, announced it has received thousands of one-of-a-kind artifacts, props, posters, handbills, illustrations and other objects from the estate of Paul G. Allen.

The items span decades of cultural moments across science fiction, fantasy, horror, and rock ‘n’ roll music among other genres and include rare artifacts previously loaned to the museum as well as items never before exhibited in public.

Allen, philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder, was an avid collector and co-founder of MoPOP.

Michele Y. Smith CEO of MoPOP said.

“These artifacts and their stories wonderfully support our continued mission to use the power of pop culture to spark joy, elevate diverse voices, and to use that power to bring audiences, stories, and histories from pop culture that are not always seen on museum walls. It’s an opportunity to not only celebrate icons of the past, but current and future creators as well to spark joy, reflection, and creativity for our visitors from around the world.”

The breadth and depth of Allen’s movie and music-related collection was appreciated worldwide.

Highlights of his gift to MoPOP include:
  • a 1951 Epiphone FT 79 acoustic guitar owned by Jimi Hendrix;
  • a hand-painted and smashed Univox electric guitar owned by Kurt Cobain;
  • a complete alien creature suit from the 1979 film Alien;
  • Darth Vader’s helmet from the 1980 blockbuster film Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back;
  • handwritten lyrics by David Bowie for “Starman” from the early 1970s;
  • the motorcycle jacket worn by Prince in his 1984 film Purple Rain;
  • a collection of Nichelle Nichols’ (Lt. Nyota Uhura) hand-annotated scripts from the Star Trek television and film series (1965-1998);
  • the iconic hat worn by Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz;
  • a full-size flying “Spinner” vehicle from the 1982 film Blade Runner, among many other items.

Jacob McMurray, Director of Curatorial, Collections, and Exhibits said,

“MoPOP’s permanent collection and exhibitions showcase the unique role that popular culture plays in our lives - whether we realize it’s there or not. The artifacts in this bequest offer an extraordinary enhancement to our current and upcoming exhibitions, where they will surprise and delight visitors from around the world.
"Having had the pleasure to work with some of these objects in the past, and now the opportunity to integrate many others into MoPOP’s collection, we are thrilled to be able to highlight the impact and resonance of these artifacts and how they have helped shaped our popular culture.”

Several dozen artifacts from the bequest are currently on display in Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic, Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Film, Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses, and other exhibitions.

In addition, these artifacts will be incorporated into many future exhibitions, the online collections vault, and loans to other museums and institutions worldwide.

This bequest expands the scope of MoPOP’s 80,000+ object permanent collection to be more reflective of the breadth of content that we explore as a Museum of Pop Culture, and further highlights the Museum’s mission to make creative expression a life-changing force as a global leader in the preservation, display, and interpretation of popular culture.

MoPOP (Museum of Pop Culture) is a leading-edge nonprofit museum in Seattle, dedicated to the ideas and risk-taking that fuel contemporary pop culture. It is located at 325 5th Avenue N at Seattle Center.

Boardwalk for Kruckeberg Botanic Garden - Enhancing accessibility to experiences in nature

You cannot click to learn more from this graphic, but the information is included in the article.

The Kruckeberg Boardwalk Project will soon be in progress to enhance your access to positive experiences in nature.

By Spring 2024, you'll be able to stroll along a 450 foot raised walkway through the beautiful tree canopy, offering unique views of the Garden. This will be the perfect way to smoothly transition to and from the three acres of the Lower Garden.

During construction from September 2023 to March 2024, we will be working on weekdays to bring this project to life. While there may be limited access to the south side of the parking lot and to select areas of the Garden, we plan to keep the open hours and days unchanged during construction.

City of Shoreline staff worked closely with Kruckeberg staff and the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation Board of Directors to design a boardwalk that creates an accessible path from the upper to lower garden.

Extensive surveys of the site and geotechnical testing of the soil, along with obtaining arborist assessments ensure that the design has a light footprint with minimal impact to the current collection.

The final layout will include a six-foot wide path with a maximum height of twelve feet. There will also be an additional accessible ramp that ties into an existing trail.

Found: motor vehicle key FOB on the Light Rail Train

Found! Photo by Ernie Moy
About a week and a half ago, a key FOB was left on a seat in a Lynnwood Link light rail car headed for Seattle.

Conscientious Shoreline resident Ernie Moy tried to turn it in.

"Staff at the Northgate deck did not want to accept the FOB incase owner should arrive to claim them. They suggested I give them to Transit security.  They (security) did not want it."

If this is yours, contact us at Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com with the date and time you might have lost your key.

State turns unexpected hospital closure into opportunity to address urgent behavioral health needs

Washington state will lease and purchase the former Cascade Behavioral Health Facility. The facility will add about 100 beds to the state's behavioral health system.

As part of an urgent effort to serve the increasing numbers of people waiting for behavioral health services, including those in jail awaiting competency services, the Department of Social and Health Services finalized an agreement to lease and purchase the former Cascade Behavioral Health facility in Tukwila.

The purchase of the vacant behavioral health hospital for $29.9 million will add about 100 beds. The department will take a phased approach of making the beds available to patients. The facility operated as a privately-owned psychiatric hospital until it was shuttered last month.

“The closure of this hospital was tough news, but it also presented us with a sudden and unexpected opportunity,” said Gov. Jay Inslee.
“We have been working diligently to serve rapidly growing numbers of patients needing behavioral health care, but one of our biggest constraints is the amount of time it takes to build and staff new facilities.
"I appreciate the work of the department to act quickly so the state could prepare a competitive bid. We will move as quickly as we can to prepare the hospital to serve patients.”

Over the past nine fiscal years, requests for DSHS to provide inpatient evaluations and competency restoration services have increased by roughly 145 %. These large and unpredicted increases in the number of county criminal court orders have exceeded the large number of beds already added to the forensic system.

The Legislature approved his request-legislation which initiates several reforms to improve access to care, provide more options for services and diversion outside the court system, and improve efficiency.

Multiple new facilities are currently in the process of being developed and opened. DSHS is creating a new facility for people found not guilty by reason of insanity, which is scheduled to open later this fall at the Maple Lane campus near Rochester.

$1.2 million in narcotics blocked by Shoreline Police and King County Sheriff’s Office - keeping nearly 300,000 fentanyl pills off the street

Narcotics Detection K9 Quinn poses with drugs he helped take out of circulation
Photo courtesy Shoreline Police

Nearly 300,000 fentanyl pills and other narcotics are out of the hands of a narcotics trafficker thanks to the work of the King County Sheriff’s Office, which recently conducted an operation to stop the dangerous drug from hitting the street.

The amount of fentanyl seized is enough to cause more than 2 million lethal doses and is one of the largest seizures ever for the Sheriff’s Office.

Operation “Jade” took place on Thursday, August 3rd, and was led by the Shoreline Police Special Emphasis Team (SET) and assisted by Precinct 4 SET and Narcotics Detection K9 Quinn.

The operation targeted a narcotics trafficker suspected of distributing large amounts of fentanyl and other substances in the cities of Shoreline, Burien, White Center, and Seattle.

"Amidst significant staffing shortages and various hurdles, Shoreline Police Department has remained committed to keeping our investigative teams intact," said Shoreline Police Chief Kelly Park.
"In this particular case, our dedicated detectives worked swiftly and efficiently to gather essential information. Their collaboration with KCSO's SW Precinct detectives proved invaluable, facilitating the prompt and secure retrieval of these deadly narcotics and firearms.
"The diligent efforts of our investigators seamlessly align with the City of Shoreline Council's goals to promote community safety and foster healthy neighborhoods."

The operation seized:
  • 290,000 M-30/fentanyl pills
  • 9.5 pounds of fentanyl powder
  • 1 pound of cocaine
  • 5.7 pounds of heroin
  • $52,043 in cash
  • 1 stolen firearm (handgun)
“I’m incredibly grateful for the hard work of our Sheriff’s Office in fighting the scourge of fentanyl,” said Executive Dow Constantine. “In this one operation, the Sheriff’s Office stopped enough fentanyl to take the lives of millions of people. King County will not stop in this fight, and we’re working around the clock, through law enforcement, public health, and human services to protect people from this deadly toxin.”

One suspect was booked into King County Jail on a firearms violation and multiple counts of violating the Uniformed Controlled Substances Act – Possession with intent.

Operation Jade was dedicated to and named after retired King County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Detection K9 Jade, who sadly passed away last month, surrounded by her family. Jade dedicated much of her life to protecting the communities of King County and bringing joy to whoever was fortunate enough to interact with her.

“We’re incredibly proud of our dedicated deputies who, through their relentless efforts and investigation, were able to remove a large amount of narcotics from our community,” said King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall.
“Every drug removed from our streets is a potential life saved, and this operation showcases our commitment to enhancing safety for all within our neighborhoods.”

Wildfire smoke is coming: Prepare now to protect yourself and your home

September 2022 looking east to Lake
Washington and the Cascades at sunrise.
Photo by Mike Remarcke
By John Cornaby – NEMCo Community Outreach Committee

Wildfire smoke this summer and fall could be a major issue.

As we have seen in the national news, the East Coast and Midwest areas of the U.S. have already seen periods of very bad air quality due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, with this smoke even expected to reach Europe.

In past years, we have experienced very bad air quality due to wildfires in British Columbia, as well as our local area.

This year, there have already been small fires on the Olympic Peninsula, with projections showing that this season will be extended.

This means that we can expect to see fires in our region and that now is the time to prepare for the very real possibility of heavy smoke in the air.

According to the Seattle and King County Public Health, when wildfires burn, they produce smoke…
“… that contains gases and fine particles. These fine particles are smaller than ten microns; for comparison, diameter of a human hair is forty to fifty microns. And the particles are particularly bad for human health.
"They can be breathed into the lungs, where they can act as respiratory tract irritants, and smaller particles can even penetrate deeper into the bloodstream and cause widespread inflammation. Children, adults sixty-five and older, pregnant people and people with lung or heart conditions are particularly vulnerable.“
How to build a low-cost air filter

They have several recommendations
on how to protect yourself and your home, including wearing the correct mask and creating “clean rooms.” NEMCo encourages everyone to explore their website for additional ideas on how to ensure you and your family have masks available and a way to take smoke particles out of the air in your home.

The right type of mask is important. The supply of blue medical masks from Covid and even the KN95 masks are not sufficient. You should have a mask that is classified as a respirator, such as an N95 or P100.

A respirator mask should have two straps that go around your head, not just hook over the ears. While N95 masks were in short supply during Covid they are available now.

You should pick some up before smoke arrives in our area and the rush starts depleting these supplies. P100 masks are very effective at filtering out smoke and gases but are more cumbersome to wear. If you are really sensitive or have existing respiratory issues, it might be something you want to consider.

If you have an air conditioning system in your home be sure that filters have been cleaned or replaced to better filter out smoke particles that get in. If you don’t have a filtering system, you can make one from a box fan and furnace air filter. The University of Washington has a graphic explaining how to do this, which you can see here

Again, think about preparing ahead of time instead of trying to find box fans when the heat increases, or smoke arrives.

Orca statue stolen from Richmond Beach Community Park

STOLEN!
From the Board of the Richmond Beach Community Association

Sometime during the weekend of August 5 - 6 one of our beloved Orca sculptures disappeared from its post at the Richmond Beach Community Park next to the library.

The individual(s) that made the decision to steal from our Richmond Beach community may be rethinking that decision in the light of day; and since this is a "small town" of caring and concerned neighbors who love to talk, it is unlikely that this theft will go unsolved for long.

Since these are considered a valuable piece of commissioned art, if the orcas are not returned, we will have no choice but to move forward with an investigation, police involvement and potential subsequent charges.

Before we start down that path, we would like to offer a “no-questions-asked” drop off of the missing orca regardless of its current condition.

Please deliver the orca to the Richmond Beach Library by Friday, August 11, 2023.

We have been overwhelmed by the community response to the orcas -- how much they are enjoyed, how everyone looks forward to their return in the spring and how protective folks are of them.

Let’s work together, hold out for someone to do the right thing again this time and keep our beloved Orcas from becoming an endangered species.

Please contact the RBCA Board at Board@RichmondBeachWA.org with any information relating to the missing orcas.

Update to fatality collision on Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park

Location of the collision.
Roadway was blocked in both directions.
On July 31, 2023 at approximately 8:30pm, the Lake Forest Park Police and Shoreline Fire Departments jointly responded to the 19000 block of Ballinger Way NE (State Route 104) for a reported vehicle versus motorized foot scooter collision that occurred on the highway.

A vehicle traveling on Ballinger Way NE collided with a rider on a motorized foot scooter.

A 20-year-old male scooter rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the motor vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

No drugs or alcohol were involved with the collision. Ballinger Way NE was closed in both directions during the investigation

The initial investigation has identified that a motor vehicle was lawfully traveling northbound on Ballinger Way NE approaching the intersection of NE 190th Street.

The motorized scooter rider pulled in behind a southbound facing vehicle that was stopped for oncoming vehicle traffic and preparing to turn east to NE 190th Street.

The motorized scooter rider pulled out from behind the lawfully stopped vehicle and went directly in front of the northbound traveling vehicle.

There was no time for the vehicle driver to be able to avoid a collision. Witnesses and the vehicle drivers stopped and attempted to provide aid to the motorized scooter rider until they were relieved by arriving Shoreline Fire Department personnel.

The deceased was a resident of Shoreline. Family members of the deceased  were notified by police department supervisors of the collision and came to the collision scene.

The continuing collision investigation is being jointly conducted with the Lake Forest Park Police Department (LFPPD) and the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Only 118 property owners have taken advantage of the free Trees for Rail program

Trees For Rail is celebrating its third and final year helping Shoreline residents plant native trees.

Since 2021, only 118 properties have participated in the program.

The collaboration between Sound Transit, the City of Shoreline, and King Conservation District (KCD) works to re-green the Lynnwood Link light rail corridor with native trees and shrubs as it passes through the City of Shoreline.

KCD staff will be at Celebrate Shoreline August 19, 2023 to share information about the program and the importance of our urban tree canopy.

For more information, and to determine if your property qualifies, visit kingcd.org/TreesForRail.

This program is different from and in addition to the Free Trees for Shoreline program.

School supply donation drive for Hopelink Kenmore Place families

For over five years, Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, Washington, has had a school supply drive for families at Hopelink Kenmore Place.

This year’s drive lasts from now until August 20, 2023. Hopelink has given Redeemer the list of items needed.

Before loading the supplies in the backpack
Donate items
  • Go to bit.ly/COR-HKPdonations to donate items from this list or to donate money.
  • To donate items, choose them from the online catalog. It works as an online store because it uses store software.
  • Once you’ve selected your donations, go to your favorite store to buy them, and bring them to Redeemer. at 6210 NE 181st St in Kenmore, Washington
  • Deliver them to the main doors at Redeemer on Sunday mornings from now through August 20, 2023.
  • Do not deliver your donations during the week, as there are times when no one can receive your donations.
  • Do not bring your donations to the parish hall on the lower level.

Redeemer accepts money donations for this drive, too. Things always happen that cannot go into the plans, like new residents. From bit.ly/COR-HKPdonations, use the link to donate money earmarked for the school supply drive. Any extra funds received will go to Redeemer’s other outreach efforts with Kenmore Place.

If you have any questions, Susan Switzer and Jillian Gerke are spearheading the school supply drive this year. In addition to talking to them on Sunday mornings, you can send a message to hkpschoolsupplies@redeemer-kenmore.org.

Because people give to this school supply drive, a child facing housing insecurity will have pencils when school starts.

Hopelink is a nonprofit organization working to end poverty in our community. Each year we help more than 64,000 people through programs that provide stability and the skills and knowledge needed to exit poverty.

Hopelink provides a network of critical social services through a number of different programs—including housing, transportation, family development, financial assistance, employment programs, adult education, financial literacy training, and five food banks.

For families experiencing homelessness, transitional and long-term housing as well as emergency family shelter may be available through Hopelink.

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 NE 181st St in Kenmore, Washington. We are a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.

The Episcopal Church welcomes you.

A free book a month for every Washington child from birth to age five from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

On August 15, 2023 legendary icon, musician, and philanthropist Dolly Parton will visit Washington State to celebrate achieving statewide coverage of the Imagination Library.

All Washington children from birth to age five can now register to receive one book every month, for free, from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

August 15 will also be signified by a proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee and Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck as “Imagination Library of Washington Day.”

Governor Inslee expressed, “We welcome the great Dolly Parton to celebrate our statewide program and promote registration for our youngest learners into the Imagination Library.
"It is important to get high quality books to children from a young age and ensure that their families, and their unique races, ethnicities and identities are well-represented among the selection of books.”

Hosted by the Imagination Library of Washington, the celebratory event will feature a fireside chat with Dolly Parton, a small performance, and recognition of champions from across the state who are making Dolly’s dream possible for Washington’s earliest learners.

This invite-only event will be broadcasted and streamed live on TVW (www.tvw.org) and available to view on both Imagination Library of Washington and TVW social media channels beginning at 2:30pm on Tuesday, August 15, and all are invited to tune in.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Washington was established in June 2022 by legislative direction, sponsored through a partnership with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), and administered by United Ways of the Pacific Northwest.

The program provides a high quality, age-appropriate book each month in the mail to enrolled children from birth to age five – at no cost to families in all 39 Washington counties.

Currently, more than 65,000 children in Washington are enrolled in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and in total, more than 1.6 million books have been gifted to children across the state. Prior to state commitment, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was only available in a handful of Washington regions.

Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly started Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts more than 2.4 million free books each month to children around the world. In March of 2023, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library reached a monumental global milestone: gifting more than 200 million books to children worldwide.

Families with children under five can sign up for the Imagination at ImaginationLibraryWashington.org
