For the Birds: Our State Bird — the American Goldfinch

Male feeding adult female note plumage difference - probable mating bonding.

By Christine Southwick

The American Goldfinch with its vibrant yellow plumage, black cap worn jauntily low over its forehead, black tail, and wings edged with white, is always a welcome sight at local feeders.

Goldfinches arrive in small flocks, first heard calling while flying in an up-down rollercoaster fashion.

Winter use of birdbath. Note bird in middle is a Pine Siskin flanked by two goldfinches.

The American Goldfinch is the only finch that molts its body feathers twice a year: in early spring the male changes into the lemon-yellow breeding plumage that so many of us expect when we think of goldfinches; in late fall their body feathers are exchanged for yellow olive-brown ones, minus the cap.

The females stay a dullish olive-yellow with yellow highlights that are bright yellow in the summer, and pale in the winter. Females have two light wing bars on their black wings, versus the single white wing bar that the male displays. Both have pink conical bills in the summer which turn dark in the winter.

were eight plus goldfinches including females-delightful!
Most goldfinches arrive in our area mid-April and leave mid-October, but there are always a few hardy flocks that stay and grace our presence, roaming from weed-patch to open fields, staying for a while in yards with seed-heads and seed feeders, and then nomadically moving on to the next source of seeds.

American Goldfinches are happiest in abandoned fields and roadsides where they consume vast amounts of thistle¸ dandelion, tree (especially maple), and other wild seeds.

By using their feet extensively while feeding, American Goldfinches are able to pluck seeds that other birds can’t access.

They are classified as “granivores”, meaning that they are almost totally vegetation, eating only seeds, or maybe a few aphids.

They even feed their four-to six nestlings regurgitated seeds, not insects.

Their breeding season starts in July, later than any other finch, timed to use seed fibers, especially thistle down, for their nests, and to have ripe weed and flower seeds for eating.

Close up of male.
Bring American Goldfinches into your yard with nyjer thistle seed, black-oil sunflower seeds, and bird baths.

Place your feeders in an open area away from overhanging tree branches. (Note if you use black-oil sunflower seeds with shells, starlings can’t eat those seeds.)

Do not use any pesticides or weed killers.

Plant zinnias, cosmos, bee balm and perennial flowering plants, and leave the flower heads until spring for winter feeding.

You may be rewarded with a fly-in by these cheerful Wild Canaries.

Vandals cause brush fire in Richmond Beach

Richmond Beach fire

It appears that we made it through the 4th of July without accidental fire damage. Air quality in the region went into the pollution range because of all the fireworks.

The fire in the photo is different, though, because it was vandalism. Multiple people in Richmond Beach report that people in a car were driving around the neighborhood throwing fireworks out the windows.

This one found a home in a pile of brush in a driveway between two houses. Shoreline Fire responded quickly

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in Mukilteo and Port Orchard to highlight funding of infrastructure projects

Buttigieg (center) with Sen. Maria Cantwell

Politicians gathered at the Mukilteo ferry dock on Thursday, July 6, 2023 with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to celebrate the Biden-Harris administration's #investinginAmerica plan, which has granted almost $133 million to support several infrastructure projects around our state. #Bidenomics @GovInsleeGovernor Jay Inslee

Inslee said "I'm grateful for the partnership and want to thank Secretary Buttigieg and members of our delegation for securing this funding and also for securing RAISE grants for Seattle, Shoreline, Blaine, Port Angeles, and the Jamestown S'Kalallam Tribe, and Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe."

One of the projects funds purchase of electric ferries for the Puget Sound fleet.

In Port Orchard in Kitsap County the Governor, along with Senators Cantwell and Murray spoke of the grant to the Port of Bremerton to replace a failing breakwater.

The Port Orchard Marina Breakwater project will replace 1,500 linear feet of a 12-foot wide public breakwater that protects the community of Port Orchard, the marina facilities, the exclusive moorage for the Suquamish Tribes fishing vessels, and the Kitsap Transit passenger ferries. The failing breakwater also protects the only marine fuel facility within 16 nautical miles.

The marina supports essential government emergency response services, tribal and non-tribal commercial fishing, moorage of 341 permanent saltwater slips, 100 guest saltwater slips for recreational use, and moorage exclusively for the Suquamish Tribe. The marina additionally provides moorage for the Kitsap Transit Fast Ferry fleet, which helps transport more than 23,000 passengers per month. In the last year, Kitsap Transit also provided over 200,000 passenger trips to Port Orchard.

Upland Village Relocation Road Project, Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe of the Shoalwater Bay Indian Reservation — $24.98 million

“The Shoalwater Bay Tribe is on the frontlines of some of the most serious effects of climate change,” said Senator Murray of the grant for the Shoalwater Bay Tribe.
“This community is one that’s experiencing firsthand the impact of rising sea levels, and they need help to keep Tribal members and their property safe from harm. This grant is going to make a major difference for the Shoalwater Bay Tribe as they work to move to higher ground and protect their community from coastal hazards.

West Side Transformation: Multimodal Connections to the Shoreline South Regional Transit Hub

The City of Shoreline $20million RAISE grant will fund a series of multimodal improvements including a bicycle and pedestrian bridge across Interstate 5, ADA sidewalks and curb ramps on 145th Street, roadway geometry modifications on 145th Street, and a series of bicycle boulevards on low-stress streets.

Scene on the Sound: Cruise ship and Nimitz as seen from Richmond Beach

Theresa Williams of Richmond Beach captured this view of the Nimitz coming home as the Norwegian Encore was leaving Seattle headed for Alaska.

Per Wikipedia, "USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched, and commissioned as CVAN-68, "aircraft carrier, attack, nuclear powered", but she was later redesignated as CVN-68, "aircraft carrier, multi-mission, nuclear-powered", on 30 June 1975, as part of a fleet-wide realignment that year."

Story and Photos By Doug Cerretti

The Starr Sutherland, Jr Post 227 of The American Legion celebrated the beginning of summer with a BBQ Saturday June 24, 2023, attended by veterans, the Auxiliary, family, friends and the community.

Under the direction of US Army veteran Shirley Lovelace, a very appealing BBQ lunch was prepared with the help of master griller Steve Seng, US Marines, Patty Cornelius and John Biladeau, American Red Cross.

As part of the summer celebration our resident karate school, the Shoreline Karate Club, presented a demonstration of karate.

Obituary: Robert Roy Hereford age 73

Robert Roy Hereford
Robert Roy Hereford, age 73, passed away on June 9, 2023 after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer 22 months earlier.

Bob's strong will and good humor during his chemotherapy allowed him, and those who loved him, to enjoy the gift of many treasured bonus days, including time spent with his wife, Karen, exploring the San Juan Islands on their Nordic tug, Shearwater.

He was born and raised in West Seattle. He joined the Air Force in 1969 and served until 1973, mostly in Thailand.

There, he discovered photography, which became his life's passion and career. He was a much-beloved employee at Seattle Central College, working as the school photographer, until his retirement in 2014.

But he also developed a second passion, when he was introduced to commercial salmon fishing in Alaska in 1981.

His first season in Bristol Bay hooked him. He eventually became the skiff man on a seiner skippered by John Nevin out of Kodiak, AK. John and his family came to be very dear friends, and his wife, Karen, often joined at the end of the season to fish, crab and enjoy adventures around Anton Larsen Island.

He could always be counted on, to be there if you needed him, and to entertain with his stories and laughter. He was honest and generous and kind, but also mischievous. He loved conjuring surprises, especially for his wife Karen, some of which are legend.

His loss is immeasurable to all who knew him.

He was so grateful for the care he received from the Swedish Cancer Institute, Dr. Philip Gold, his nurse Nancy, Dr. Christine McConnell, her nurse Charlie and all the other incredible nurses and staff there.

He is predeceased by his father, Clyde, his mother, Helen, and nephew Jacob, and is survived by his wife, Karen, his sister, Robin, brother David (Natalie), nephews Sam, Reif, Tyler, and Joshua.

A celebration of his life is planned for July 30, 2023. Contact his wife or brother for details.

Please consider donating to Swedish Cancer Institute, or Fishermen's Memorial Fund.

Estelle goes to the market (LFP Farmers Market)

SAN Intern Estelle Lee reports on her visit to the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, held on the lower level parking lot at LFP Town Center, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

As I pulled into the Third Place Commons’ busy lot, I could already see the bustle of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market in the distance.

LFP Farmers Market on a lovely Sunday afternoon in June

The lively scene with family, friends, and furry friends will take place every Sunday from 10am to 2pm until October 15, 2023.

This Sunday was my first time visiting the market that is bringing together over 40 vendors this season. In the city’s latest 70-degree weather, I smiled at the first booth. Seattle Pops, a particularly popular stand with a curving line, proudly displayed its delicious flavors and the local origins of their ingredients.

Wilson Fish Markets and its quirky signs

After buying a $5.50 pop (mint chocolate chip), I swiveled around and saw Wilson Fish Markets. With “local troll caught fish,” the stand’s king salmon, cod, and sea scallops were surrounded by snappy quotes and jokes. One reminds Lake Forest Park residents: “We don’t stop fishing because we get old. We get old because we stop fishing.”

$20 flower bundles and bouquets scattered the market, with fresh pink peonies that caught my friend’s eye.

And of course, besides bunches of flowers, LFP Farmers Market brought some of the state’s best farms — Well Fed Farms, Alvarez Organic Farms, EF Produce, and more — presenting onions with stalks and Bugs-Bunny carrots with fronds. Fir Island’s Hayton Farms had already sold out their Himbo-Top raspberries and tayberries. A purple booth sold locally made elderberry soup in purple cans, with samples of elderberry wellness syrup available for passersby.

Well Fed Farms brings berries, beets, carrots, and cabbage

Golden Girls Honey and Hives from North Creek stunned with its smooth, shining jars of honey.

The green Happy Cat Farms stand boasted its “vegetables made easy” with its cat-packaged microgreens.

Along with people, LFP Farmers Market was heaven for its dog walkers, with Pupeli’s natural dog snacks and plush puppies at the North Sound Police Foundation stand.

A small pup roams Third Place Commons grounds

Refreshers were strewn about, some for me and some for those over 21. Lopez Island Vineyards presented bottles of water-colored wine with gold caps, and Tin Dog Brewing stacked cans of their signature beer.

Alpenglow Cocktail Company offered handcrafted cocktail mixers from the great pacific northwest and fresh squeezed lemonade for visitors of all ages. Honest Mocha brings coffee from farmers in Yemen, boosting socio-economic reform in the country and happiness in LFP.

Honest Mocha’s stand with Yemen specialty coffee and informational papers

La Pasta and Ola Mae’s Southern BBQ provided the perfect lunchtime meals for my friend and I, who grubbed on ravioli and a pulled pork sandwich. After, booths of salami, salsa, pastries, and marshmallow crispy treats tempted us with a snack.

The Bob Pearson Images stand showed beautiful photography, and SK Designs displayed stunning handcrafted jewelry, in the shape of rings, earrings, anklets, and more.

A sign near the necklaces read: “Unattended children will be given a cup of espresso and a free puppy.”

Bob Pearson Images captures bees, valleys, and clouds

After unsuccessfully wandering SK Designs’ booth as an “unattended child,” I figured I’d explored the best of LFP Farmers Market. With a pop, some ravioli, and tester salsa and salami sitting in my stomach, I skipped back to my car, impatient for the next Sunday.

The very popular Leena's Cafe closed its doors at the end of May 2023.

The owner of the cafe, Nick Athan, had bought the building when it came up for sale. Within a short time, the pandemic hit and Athan closed the cafe. He reopened when the pandemic was waning and restrictions were gradually being lifted and kept it going until the building sold.

The family of a woman who survived the July 3 Mountlake Terrace townhouse fire that took the lives of her mother and sister has created a GoFundMe fundraiser on her behalf.

Jonathan and Renee Boulet, son-in-law and daughter to fire survivor Pam O’Hara, created a GoFundMe account July 4, 2023.

The account is meant to help Pam O’Hara’s basic needs, as she lost everything in the fire.

Funds raised will also assist with funeral costs for the two fire victims: Pam O’Hara’s mother Audrey O’Hara, and sister Terry O’Hara.

O’Hara’s home of 22 years caught fire, and it spread to two connecting townhomes, damaging all three.

The six residents of those households were displaced and are being assisted by Support 7 and American Red Cross.
