Shorewood Water Polo team

The Puget Sound Water Polo Division 2 Championships begin Wednesday May 17, 2023 at Rogers High School in Puyallup. Shorewood and Shorecrest are two of the nine high school teams that will be competing. The Shoreline schools qualified by finishing in the top three of the regular season standings in their subdivision.

Shorecrest is playing the opening game of the tournament against Auburn Riverside, while Shorewood will take on Puyallup in the first round. The competition runs through Saturday, May 20. The top three finishers in the Division 2 Championships will advance to the State Championships to be held May 24-27 at Curtis High School.

Shorecrest Water Polo team

The Shoreline high school water polo teams have enjoyed tremendous growth over the past few years under the leadership of Coach Mira Ho at Shorewood and Coach Nick Maxwell at Shorecrest.

When the current Senior class were Freshman, there were only enough players for one combined Shorewood / Shorecrest team. This year, both schools have enough players to field Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.

AG Ferguson’s lawsuit forces Google to pay nearly $40M over deceptive location tracking

Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced Google will pay $39.9 million to Washington state as a result of his office’s lawsuit over misleading location tracking practices. Google will also implement a slate of court-ordered reforms to increase transparency about its location tracking settings.

Ferguson’s lawsuit against Google asserted that the tech giant deceptively led consumers to believe that they have control over how Google collects and uses their location data. In reality, consumers could not effectively prevent Google from collecting, storing and profiting from their location data.

Ferguson investigated Google’s conduct as part of a multistate effort. Instead of joining a multistate settlement, Ferguson’s office independently filed its own lawsuit and obtained this resolution. The Attorney General’s Office estimates Washington received more than double the amount it would have received under the wider multistate settlement.

“Google denied Washington consumers the ability to choose whether the company could track their sensitive location data, deceived them about their privacy options, and profited from that conduct,” Ferguson said. “Today’s resolution holds one of the most powerful corporations accountable for its unethical and unlawful tactics.”

In addition to paying nearly $40 million, the legally binding consent decree, filed in King County Superior Court, requires Google to be more transparent with consumers about how it tracks and uses consumer data. Under this consent decree, Google must:Show additional information to users whenever they enable a location-related account setting by describing the sources, purposes and retention of relevant location data;
  • Ensure users see information about location tracking; and
  • Give users detailed information at an enhanced “Location Technologies” webpage about the types of location data Google collects and how it will use that data.
Ferguson investigated Google’s conduct as part of a multistate effort to hold it accountable for its location tracking practices in the wake of reports of the company’s misleading “Web and App Activity” setting.

Ferguson’s office independently filed a lawsuit and obtained a resolution separate from a multistate legal action. As a result, the Attorney General’s Office estimates Washington received double the amount it would have received under the wider multistate settlement.

The Attorney General’s Office will use money from the resolution to continue enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act and take more actions to protect Washingtonians’ data privacy. The Consumer Protection Division receives minimal general fund support and largely funds itself through recoveries in cases like this.

State is amping up installations of EV charger stations

Both private and publicly-funded construction of new
chargers is accelerating, improving convenience for EV drivers.
Electric vehicle registration statewide and nationwide has quintupled in five years.

EVs now account for one in ten vehicles sold in the United States.

A proposed federal rule would compel manufacturers to make more EVs, and a new state law requires all new vehicles sold beyond 2035 to have zero tailpipe emissions.

The laws are written. The climate crisis is urgent.

The EV wave is coming, but there remains a critical question:

Are we ready to charge all these electric cars?

Construction of new chargers has zoomed since 2013 from fewer than 20 to more than 400 per year. New federal and state investments will further accelerate new installations, with special emphasis on serving residents of multifamily housing and rural areas.

Right now, EV drivers encounter some common inconveniences. The state is rolling out record investments and smart new policy to address these issues and pave the way for increasing EV adoption.

Meet and Celebrate the Canopy Scholars Community!
Canopy Scholars Bloom Lunch
Saturday, June 3 | 11:30 AM
Innis Arden Club House
1430 NW 188th St, Shoreline

You are invited to our Bloom Lunch, where we will recognize and celebrate the Canopy Scholars community: our scholars and their families, volunteers, and supporters! It’s an opportunity to connect and learn about what makes Canopy Scholars so special.

This is not your average charity luncheon. Here’s what makes it different:
  • Our amazing YMCA partners will kick off the festivities with a fun activity.
  • We will be serving a menu inspired by the cuisine native to many of our scholars.
  • We will recognize some of the community members that have made a big impact.
  • We will honor Dr. Rose Madrid Swetman, who gave Canopy Scholars its roots.
Just as the canopy of a forest shelters and nourishes all the plants within, our organization comes together to create an environment where each of our students can bloom and flourish with tutoring, STEM, and community building programs.

We are excited to bring together the different parts of the Canopy community that help us thrive.

Join us to ensure that Canopy Scholars thrive!

Canopy Scholars* provides tutoring and STEM programs to a diverse population of Shoreline Elementary School students, prioritizing students participating in the National School Lunch Program.

A canopy is a living community of diverse types of trees growing together. They are sheltered from strong winds and storms, able to develop anchoring roots, branch into individual shapes, capture light and rain, produce leaves and seeds, and send water back into the atmosphere which creates rain.

At Canopy, we provide an environment for students to grow into their full potential as scholars through tutoring, STEM, and community building programs. We have a stellar team of tutors as diverse as our students, and we build relationships at every level – with students, parents, teachers.
  • TUTORING — Tutors work alongside students to strengthen math and reading skills and tackle homework challenges. Students receive more than 100 hours of one-on-one tutoring.
  • STEM — STEM programs help students strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering and math in a fun and creative environment.
  • COMMUNITY — A key part of Canopy is the fun community that develops between students, their parents, and their tutors as they grow to become scholars.
We invite you to join us in making a real difference in the lives of students today! Visit our website canopyscholars.org

WeatherWatcher: Wildfire Smoke returns, no end in sight to sunny days

From the archive, Thunderstorms bubbling up over the Olympics.
Photographed from Richmond Beach August 2013 by Carl Dinse.
Believe it or not, wildfire smoke has returned to Western Washington already. This time the source of all the smoke is from wildfires in northern Alberta, Canada.

The smoke is expected to remain mostly aloft (in the upper atmosphere) this time. The smoke will, however, produce hazy days with colorful sunrises and sunsets.

Our forecast shows basically no end in sight to the sunny skies and summer like weather. There is a slight chance of some afternoon and evening thunderstorms on Thursday but beyond that, expect hazy to sunny skies and clear nights.

Temperatures will still be above normal, reaching the upper 70's to low 80's and lows in the mid to upper 50's.

We cool down a little on Sunday, with high temperatures dropping to the upper 60's with partly sunny skies and a slight chance of showers Monday.

Mostly sunny skies return Monday evening and continue through next Wednesday with highs back into the low 70's.

Daily high and low temperatures for the month of May

UW Medicine to facilitate state-mandated psilocybin trial

In early May, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5263 governing recreational and medical use of psilocybin. The new law mandates that the University of Washington School of Medicine facilitate a study to explore the potential therapeutic value of the psychedelic compound found in mushrooms.

“The big benchmark in the bill says that we need to start (treating) people Jan. 1, 2025. We have about a year and a half to get all the infrastructure developed,” said addiction psychiatrist Dr. Nathan Sackett, who will oversee the trial. He’s an acting assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

Little is known about how psilocybin affects mental health. Early studies have shown positive results, and clinical trials underway in the United States and abroad are intended to explore more deeply how psilocybin-assisted therapy might help people with depression, anxiety and other difficult-to-treat maladies.

Sackett said the Seattle-based trial will include 30 to 40 military veterans and first-responders who have documented problems with post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorders, which are often linked.

Participants will likely be recruited through community groups who already work with prospective participants.

KidVantage needs help keeping our kids clothed

This will be gone in a week.

KidVantage has provided over 1,530 clothing bundles (a week’s worth of clothing and a toothbrush / toothpaste) during the month of May.

Kids are getting the clothing that they need for the warmer summer months, but to ensure that we can keep up with requests, we need your help!

Inventory is getting low; you can help by donating new or gently used clothing at our Shoreline Hub (17230 12th Ave NE, Shoreline WA, 98155).

We’re open Tuesdays from 10am to 12pm, and Saturdays 11am to 1pm. We accept children’s clothing, shoes, and other items for kids birth through age 12. See more information on donating from our website

Who We Are

KidVantage was formerly known as Eastside Baby Corner when they first moved into Shoreline (see previous article).

KidVantage’s mission is to help kids reach their full potential tomorrow by meeting basic needs today. We provide tangible assistance at no cost to families who are in difficulty, reducing the distress felt by children, and their families.

Through partnerships with human service organizations, schools and medical facilities, more than 2,500 children each month are helped.

Kids are safe, warm, and healthy, with the advantage of being better prepared for success in school and life. Partner agencies can concentrate their resources and expertise on supporting children and families.

Members of the community connect with each other here while caring for their neighbors. They donate goods, volunteer, or give financial support to make sure kids are getting what they need, when they need it.

Inslee signs budget into law

Gov. Inslee with legislators on May 16, signing the 2023–25
operating, capital and transportation budgets into law

Gov. Jay Inslee on Tuesday signed the new 2023–25 operating, capital and transportation budgets.

The final 2023–25 operating and capital budgets followed many of the priorities Inslee put forward last December, including more than $1 billion for housing and homelessness and urgently-needed funding for behavioral health services.

Inslee also signed the new 2023–25 transportation budget on Tuesday. While Inslee acknowledged important investments for projects such as the I-5 bridge over the Columbia, new climate-related investments to electrify the transportation sector, and full funding for legally-required removal of fish passage barriers, he was unequivocal about his frustration with the final budget.

Hellbent Brewing 8th Anniversary Party
Saturday, June 10th @ Noon-Midnight

13035 Lake City Way NE
Seattle WA

What’s it all about
Pay tribute to some of your favorite bands while drinking some of the best beer north Seattle has to offer at Hellbent’s 8th Anniversary: The Tribute Party, Saturday, June 10th.

You know how we like to do it over at Hellbent, we “Can’t Stop” making mouth-watering, hop-forward brews and we’re going all out for our 8th Anniversary IPA - our personal homage to the west coast style IPA.

We invite you to “Come as You Are” and rock out to 3 bands paying tribute to Bruce Springsteen (1-3pm), Nirvana (3:30-5:30pm), and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (6-9pm).

We’ll be closing off the parking lot for an extended beer garden featuring a satellite bar, and three food trucks: Tacos and Beer, Oskars Pizza, and Impeckable Chicken. Great music? Great Food? Great beer? We’ll be “Dancing in the Dark” before you know it. No cover. 21+.

Bands/Schedule

1-3pm - Hungry Heart: Springsteen Tribute

"Of all the music that has influenced local Americana singer/songwriter, Tyler Hamilton, the classic sounds of Bruce Springsteen have taken root the deepest. He is excited to finally put together his own E-street Band to play some of his favorite songs in tribute to the Boss! Catch Tyler up on stage delivering his high energy rock and roll stylings as he takes you on a Hemi-powered journey from Asbury Park all the way to the streets of his Hometown."

3:30-5:30pm - Nevermind: Seattle’s Tribute to Nirvana

“Nevermind is a Seattle based rock and roll trio that pays tribute to legendary rock band, Nirvana. Born in the heart of Seattle in the old Studio 7 rehearsal spaces they have taken the region by storm by selling out venues with a singer that can shred the mic and guitar, a 6'8" rock bass legend, and a drummer that would make Dave Grohl blush, Nevermind is able to deliver the powerful and energetic performance that captures the sonic energy of Nirvana. Come as you are and experience a performance that will take you through BLEACH, NEVERMIND, Unplugged, IN utero, and a splash zone of DESTROYED GUITARS.”

6-9pm - Readymade: Chili Peppers Tribute

“Est. 2020, Readymade is The PNW's #1 tribute to the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The band's three seasoned instrumentalists are Nate Bushmaker (A Band Called Celia), Zak Melang (Supersonic Soul Pimps), and Chase Culp (Point One) playing the parts of "John Frusciante", "Flea", and "Chad Smith", respectively. Readymade found their free spirited "Anthony Kiedis" when a mutual friend spotted Derek Sepesy crushing "the Zephyr Song" at weeknight karaoke! Readymade is dedicated to recreating the look, sound and ecstatic live energy of the iconic California rockers to the PNW with every performance!”
