About World Collage Day

World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration of collage on the Second Saturday of May. Initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018, we invited artists and art venues to hold events on that day to celebrate collage. World Collage Day is about artists connecting across borders against a global context of entrenchment and separation.

And the day is about an art medium that excels at bringing different things together to create new forms and new ways of thinking. Ric Kasini Kadour, the editor of Kolaj Magazine, writes, “We created World Collage Day because we wanted to honor this community of artists and to remind the world what a spirit of cooperation, mutual support, and creativity can look like.”

Seattle Beer Week will raise funds for North Helpline

Hellbent Brewing, Watershed Pub /Kitchen, Project 9 Brewing, and local community partners have come together to organize the 6th annual Seattle Beer Week event that features Hellbent Brewing’s award-winning GateCity IPA.

GateCity, a combination of the two Seattle neighborhoods, Northgate and Lake City, celebrates the North Seattle community by raising funds for North Helpline, a food access and homelessness prevention nonprofit that’s been serving our community for over 30 years.

For the owners of Hellbent Brewing Company, community means more than just those that visit their brewery taproom. It is also their impact on the neighborhood they call home. That is why each year, they support Noth Helpline with the Gate City Project.

Join North Helpline and community partners for five community pop-ups held during Seattle Beer Week May 19th through 26, 2023.

Gate City IPA will be on tap at local bars around the city! Stay tuned to the North Helpline website page to see the full list when it’s announced in mid-May.

North Helpline serves the local community through two food banks, a home grocery delivery program, and direct financial assistance for rent and utilities.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were cut in March 2023, affecting over 500,000 households in Washington who will lose a total of about $95 million a month in food assistance. It is essential that we support local organizations like North Helpline that are working to address this “Hunger Cliff.”

New feature: Town and Country recipes - this month an international flavor trip with Peruvian Style Roast Chicken

Shoreline is fortunate to have two locally owned grocery stores. Town and Country Market, formerly known as Central Market, is located at 15505 Westminster Way N.Shoreline, WA 98133. Open from 7am to 10pm they have a seafood market, a deli, pizzeria, an Asian grocery section, bulk foods, fresh produce and so much more!

New to the Shoreline Area News, Town and Country will be providing a monthly recipe column.

Peruvian style roast chicken
May's recipe:

Peruvian Style Roast Chicken

Intro: Inspired by Peruvian flavors, the herbs, spices, beer and lime in the marinade deliver loads of flavor while keeping your chicken tender and juicy. Marinate 6 to 24 hours.

Prep time: 20 Minutes
Cook time: 1 Hr 30 Min
Yield: 2-4 Servings

Ingredients:

¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
½ cup lime juice
½ cup beer
6 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons kosher salt
2 teaspoons hot paprika
2 teaspoons black pepper
1 tablespoon cumin
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 tablespoons minced fresh mint
1 tablespoon sugar1 whole chicken (3-4 pounds or chicken pieces)

Instructions:

STEP 1
Combine all the ingredients except chicken in a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth. Spoon marinade over chicken, spreading under the skin and inside the bird. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight.

STEP 2
Heat oven to 425˚F. Place chicken on a rack in an oven-safe pan. Roast for 20 minutes.

STEP 3
Reduce oven temperature to 375˚F and roast for another hour, or until chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165˚F and nicely browned.

STEP 4
Remove from oven, cover loosely with foil and let rest 10-15 minutes before carving.

OPTIONS
Perfect pairings for this chicken include Aji Verde (Peruvian green sauce), rice, and/or fried plantains.

Extra info:

The first stop on our international flavor trip is to Peru with this South American inspired chicken recipe.

The recipe can be made with a whole chicken or bone in skin on chicken pieces. Both are available in our meat department.

The bulk foods department is a great place to buy your dry spices. Not only is it a cost saver, but it also ensures your spices stay fresh because you can buy as little or as much as you want. While stopping by bulk foods for your spices also grab some rice to serve alongside your chicken.

There are three different categories of paprika. Regular paprika, the mildest in flavor and best used as a garnish. Hungarian paprika, consisting of different types, but all tend to be primarily sweet. And lastly, the preferred for this recipe, Spanish paprika. Ranging from sweet to spicy, many Spanish paprikas tend to have a hint of smoke from chilies being dried over oak wood fires.

This recipe is best paired with a light crisp and refreshing beer such as your favorite lager or pilsner.

Aji verde and Tostones (Fried plantains) are both recipes found on our website that consist mostly of our beautiful fresh produce that will greet you upon entering our market.

Gem avocados (ingredient in Aji verde) are on Big Board sale this week!

Elliott Way opens on Seattle Waterfront

Elliott Way now open on Seattle Waterfront

After four years, 1 million pounds of reinforcing steel, 77 soldier piles and 142 ground anchors, 18 concrete girders weighing up to 75 tons each and 46,000 individual plantings, Elliott Way is here!

Through (mostly) rain or shine, we set our sights on building a new street that'll strengthen connections between the waterfront and Belltown. Opening the new street is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole Waterfront Seattle team.

The opening of Elliott Way also marks the beginning of a new chapter in construction - we can now focus our efforts on construction of the Park Promenade, which has been under construction west of Alaskan Way since last summer.

The 20-acre linear park will be the core of the waterfront and extend from Pioneer Square to Pier 62. The Park Promenade is one of the waterfront improvements still under construction and will open by late 2024.

Trailhead Direct resumes Transit to Trails service on Saturday May 13, 2023

King County’s Trailhead Direct, the weekends and holidays transit-to-trails service, will begin its fifth season on Saturday, May 13, 2023 and run through Labor Day, Monday, September 4.

Metro and King County Parks, with the support of the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and Amazon, are working together to provide funding for the 2023 season.

This summer, Trailhead Direct continues to focus the transit-to-trails service on the most popular route with stops at trailheads near Mount Si, Mount Teneriffe, and Little Si.

Riders can take the bus, Sound Transit Link light rail, or bike to get to the Sound Transit Capitol Hill Link station, where Trailhead Direct coaches will depart every 30 minutes.

The 2023 season will include service on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

"Trailhead Direct is a convenient alternative to driving and parking when you want to explore some of the best hiking King County has to offer," said Executive Constantine.
"I am looking forward to the start of this season's transit-to-trails service, and thank the Seattle Department of Transportation and Amazon for their partnership in this low-impact way to connect people to the great outdoors."

Trailhead Direct will operate with 14- to 32-seat vehicles and will have a rack for either two or three bikes. Passengers can use Metro’s Trip Planner to get more details about transit stops, routes, and schedules. Metro’s standard fares apply, and riders can pay with an ORCA card, Transit Go Mobile ticket, or cash with exact change. Hikers 18 and younger ride Trailhead Direct for free.

Bitter Lake Community Center extends tutoring program with The Polytech through the end of the school year

Tori and Sofia play foosball at the community center
The Polytech, a private high school that continues working with students through age 26 to assist with the transition to college, career, and adulthood, has partnered with Bitter Lake Community Center (BLCC) to offer tutoring after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BLCC has long offered a range of athletic and social programs and was pleased to begin offering professional tutoring in January of 2023.

They have now renewed through the end of the school year to give students the extra boost many need as we get closer to summer break.

Cynthia Etelamaki, director at BLCC, eagerly set up the tutoring option after other successful collaborations with The Polytech.
“We have been wanting to offer more academics to our students, and this is a great complement to our athletic programs that are so well attended. It gives students more support to complete homework while they’re already here.”

David Garlock is the right teacher for the job. He’s certified, has a master’s degree, and decades of experience teaching, but most of all, he has the ability to break down assignments into small, manageable pieces. He provides customized instruction so that students understand the material and are more confident in their abilities.

David teaches a wide range of subjects at The Polytech, including most levels of math, Physics, Earth Science, Chemistry, US History, English, and Spanish. He’s a great fit for drop-in tutoring because he’s so knowledgeable on so many subjects, and also joins in card games if everyone is caught up on assignments.

“This guy is super good at math,” said high school student, Tori W. “It’s like he’s on the same wavelength as me and can explain in a way I get it.”

BLCC staff Adam Johnson and Mariyam Abdulkarim often attend the tutoring sessions and because students know them from other activities, they become a bridge to the tutoring program. When a student expresses stress about an assignment, they can refer them to work with David. Other students drop in as needed.

Thanks to funding from Career and Education Access, a local non-profit working with The Polytech, there is no cost to Bitter Lake Community Center, parents, or students, and no appointment is necessary to attend the Tuesday/Thursday tutoring sessions. For more information, contact Reza Khastou at reza.khastou@thepolytech.com

Two LFP Police officers honored for life-saving actions under fire

On February 8, 2022 at approximately 11pm, Officers Brandon Carlsrud and Jayson Benson responded to a unknown situation where callers reported hearing gunshots and people yelling.

While enroute, a third caller reported he had been shot in the abdomen by a neighbor or “squatter.” The victim told dispatch he did not know where the subject who shot him was.

The officers arrived within minutes to an extremely chaotic scene with family members frantically screaming for help.

Officer Carlsrud located a male subject with a gunshot wound and immediately started life saving measures using his tactical trauma kit. Officer Benson provided cover in case the suspect returned.

Additional officers from Bothell and King County arrived to assist.

Aid personnel, who are prohibited from entering an unsecured scene until police clear them to enter, staged  a safe distance away.

Officers utilized a patrol vehicle to evacuate the victim, driving him to the waiting medic unit for transport.

During this investigation, officers dealt with extremely hostile and uncooperative witnesses and family members. Multiple attempts to locate or identify the suspect were unsuccessful.

Officers entered this active scene with very little thought of their safety. Their main focus was on assisting the victim and apprehending the suspect.

Medical responders later contacted the police department, stating Officer Carlsrud’s actions that night likely led to the victim's survival.

During the LFP City Council meeting on April 13, 2023 Officers Carlsrud and Benson were recognized for their bravery and quick thinking in a life-threatening situation, where they demonstrated remarkable courage and took decisive action to save the life of another human being.

Their selflessness and dedication to preserving life in the face of danger are examples of the impact Lake Forest Park Police officers have in serving our community.

The awards were given as a symbol of gratitude and admiration for their heroic actions.

The show will run from Thursday, May 11, through Sunday, May 14, and again the following weekend, Thursday, May 18, through Sunday, May 21, 2023.

Evening performance times are 7:30pm on Thursdays-Saturdays; matinees are at 2:00pm each Sunday plus an added 2:00pm matinee prior to the evening show on Saturday, May 20.

A little about Hello, Dolly!

Featuring all-time great songs like "Before the Parade Passes By" and "Put On Your Sunday Clothes," this Tony Award-winning classic is one of the most enduring and best-loved musicals ever.

Irrepressible "woman-who-arranges-things" Dolly Levi travels to Yonkers, New York, to make a match for the miserly Horace Vandergelder and gets more than she bargained for.

This exuberant, family-friendly musical bursts with humor, dance, and romance. It's a feast for the eyes, ears, and spirit --- pure musical theatre magic!

Washington now has a state dinosaur - the Suciasaurus rex

Saturday, May 6, 2023

Gov. Jay Inslee signs a bill proclaiming Suciasaurus rex as Washington’s official state dinosaur.

A large, two-legged, meat-eating therapod once roamed Washington state, as paleontologists discovered in 2012.

They found a partial thigh bone for a dinosaur similar to but smaller than a Tyrannosaurus on the shores of Sucia Island State Park.

The Burke Museum reported that "The fossil is a partial left thigh bone of a theropod dinosaur, the group of two-legged, meat-eating dinosaurs that includes Velociraptor, Tyrannosaurus rex and modern birds. It was found along the shores of Sucia Island State Park in the San Juan Islands.

"The fossil is approximately 80 million years old and is from the Late Cretaceous period. During that time, the rocks that today form Sucia Island were likely further south. How much further south is a topic of scientific debate, with locations ranging between present day Baja California, Mexico, and northern California. Earthquakes and other geologic forces that constantly reshape our planet moved the rocks north to their present-day location."

A decade later, a class project to teach kids how a bill becomes a law led to Gov. Jay Inslee signing a bill to proclaim the Suciasaurus rex as Washington’s official state dinosaur

Students from Elmhurst Elementary in Tacoma engaged their legislator Rep. Melanie Morgan to introduce the bill - both the students and Rep. Morgan were present for the signing.

Shorewood seniors receive scholarships from Alpha Delta Kappa

Kaylee Logan and Marin Cady

Marin Cady and Kaylee Logan, both seniors at Shorewood High School, were recently selected by Washington Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa to receive a scholarship for a future educator.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international organization of women educators who support in education, families and communities, and world understanding.

This $1,000 scholarship is awarded by the Washington Alpha Delta Chapter to a graduating senior who has demonstrated high academic performance, involvement in activities and community service, and a true desire to work with children. Since 2005, Alpha Delta, established in Shoreline in 1963, has awarded 29 scholarships to local students.

Marin Cady, the daughter of Jonathan and Karis Cady, is an engaging and well-rounded individual.

With a perfect gpa in a rigorous program that includes many AP, Honors, and UW courses, and on the Dean’s List of Distinction and an AP Scholar of Distinction, Marin is definitely academically prepared.

She also shows accomplishment in the fields of music and sports by playing the violin In the Shorewood Symphony Orchestra and playing softball for SW and clubs.

Marin knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age and has displayed her interest in working with children by tutoring elementary through high school in a wide range of subjects and situations, participating in Link to help incoming freshmen integrate to high school, and providing childcare for young children through fifth grade at her church.

Although she is still open to subjects and levels, Marin is drawn to the middle school age where students are discovering themselves. She has always been passionate about history and would love to engage students in its importance in social justice and solving today’s problems.

Marin plans to attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park

By Beth Weir

The title of the annual tour around the gardens in Lake Forest Park includes a word that intrigues: secret.

Tucked inside the dictionary definition is the austere notion that something is to be kept hidden.

Of course, keeping anything secret is almost impossible. Buddha recognized this when he stated that three things cannot long stay hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth.

The organizers of the Garden Tour would add gardens to Buddha’s list.

The gardens on the Lake Forest Park Tour are secret, only in the sense they are in private hands and not completely visible from the street.

The people who have loved and tended them have done so largely hidden, in ‘secrecy’ perhaps.

But, as proven by the generosity of the gardeners in opening up their yards for the public to enjoy, they are not of a mind to keep them secret.

Those of us who cannot think of life without plants, soil, flowers, and trees are grateful. We have a rare chance to peek at wonders the sun, rain and someone with dirty nails can create.

June 17, 2023 visitors will have a chance to see six ‘Secret’ gardens on the Lake Forest Park Tour.

As is always the case they vary so everyone can find a garden, a plant vignette, a placement of flowers and art, a particular tree that make the heart beat faster. Here and there, someone looking about may find a little garden secret revealed that will simply delight.

Some examples of what is in store will help. This year a big, beautiful yard is sheltered by arborvitae and junipers that give the area privacy. Within are a variety of maples and vegetables, not to mention a cutting garden.

Yet other gardens are eclectic with planting islands that host perennials and repurposed art. An English country garden will surely bring forth some sighs, particularly when viewed from the bottom of the driveway.

These are the kind of secrets, once revealed, that make a person, even one who does not like to garden, feel that body and soul are one.

We invite you to visit the 2023 Secret Garden Tour in Lake Forest Park, June 17, 9am - 3pm, to view our ‘secret’ delights.

Discount tickets online at LfpGardenTour.com and in person at Wild Birds LFP, Third Place Books LFP and Sky Nursery Shoreline.
