Wednesday, May 3, 2023

Graphic courtesy Shoreline Police

The Shoreline Police Department was pleased to partner with Shoreline Community College to host the Catalytic Converter Tagged and Protected event on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

The college’s Automotive Department volunteered to help accomplish this. A unique identifier was etched on each catalytic converter; which has been found to be a deterrent to those looking to steal them.

Automotive students volunteered their time

There was a great turnout at the event with every appointment filled. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated.

Shoreline Police are thrilled with the partnership with Shoreline Community College.

A special shout-out to the automotive program students that donated their time and to the officers who helped make this event possible.

If you were not able to sign up but still want to get your catalytic converter tagged, they will be hosting more events in the future.

Politics: Lorri Bodi announces for LFP Council

Lorri Bodi
Greetings Lake Forest Park Neighbors,

I’m excited to let you know I am seeking re-election to Lake Forest Park City Council Position 2. It’s been my privilege to represent you as your Councilmember for the last three and a half years, through the pandemic and beyond.

I will be filing for re-election in May, and seeking your votes in November.

I care deeply about our small city, and there is still work I would like to do for the future of LFP. I raised my family here and have been a consistent supporter of our community and schools.

I would like to continue to use my knowledge and public service experience – as an environmental attorney, negotiator, manager, and government executive -- to give back to LFP.

As your Council representative for the last few years, I have delivered on my commitments to you. I have worked with our citizen groups, collaborated with my fellow Council members and the City Administration, and stayed transparent and connected with the community. I have spearheaded or advocated – and voted for:
  • enhanced streams, green spaces, parks, and trees
  • housing diversity and flexibility for seniors and young families
  • public safety improvements and police reforms
  • updated zoning to guide balanced growth (especially at Town Center and in critical areas)
  • wise use of our financial resources to maintain essential services
  • affordable housing incentives for future multi-family construction
  • progress toward a Climate Action Plan for LFP
I would like to continue to hear from you and work to preserve our quality of life, support balanced growth and transit, conserve our environment, and keep LFP welcoming, safe, and affordable.

I look forward to seeing you at the Commons, the Farmers Market, and other community events, and I welcome your comments and suggestions. Please spread the word and vote for me on November 7, so I can continue to represent your interests and be a Your Voice on City Council.

Warm wishes,

Come and join us as we work together to learn how to bring happy feelings, difficult feelings, and everything in between to God in the form of a Psalm.

Paper and pens provided, but if you have a Bible please bring your own. We have extras for those who do not have one, but the more copies the better.

Saint Dunstan's is located at 722 N 145th St, Shoreline, WA 98133

Scots Baseball is playoff bound with best regular season record in 11 years

From left: Beckett Wagner, Harrison McWalter, Coach Bruns, Coach Robbins,
Coach Officer, Jason Clark, Ben Foster. From Senior Night.

By Alan Bruns, Varsity Coach,
Shorecrest Athletic Director

Thanks to a two-game sweep of Lynnwood last week, the Shorecrest baseball team has advanced to the postseason, and ended with its best regular season record in 11 years.

On Senior Night, April 25, 2023 Dillon Carrell again dazzled on the mound, pitching a 3-hit shutout, the defense turned 3 double plays (they have 12 overall this season), while Beckett Wagner broke the game open with a clutch, 2-run triple, and catcher Jake Lockwood came through with 3 hits.

In Thursday's season finale - a 4-2 victory - Shorecrest pitching was again the decisive factor, as Hudson Cunningham, Jason Clark, Hudson Ekstrom, and Jake Lockwood combined to hold down the Lynnwood offense.

Next up, Shorecrest will play host to a playoff game this Thursday, at 4:00pm, against the winner of Mountlake Terrace and Marysville-Getchell who will play on Tuesday.

The Scots go into postseason play riding the offensive production of top hitters Quinn Burnham, Beckett, Brooks Murray, and Hudson C. (leads the team with 10 RBI's), the high quality performances by starting pitchers Jake, Hudson C., and Dillon, and the stellar infield defense of Jason, Quinn, Hudson C. , and Hudson Ekstrom

GO SCOTS!

Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA)

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) returns to the Edmonds Center of the Arts with its beloved production of The Sleeping Beauty.

The show, originally scheduled for the spring of 2020, was canceled in the middle of rehearsals due to the pandemic. Now featuring a new cast of company dancers, this classical production will delight the audiences with gorgeous costumes, stunning sets by Jeanne Franz, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's magnificent score.

“We are thrilled to bring this production back after the pandemic interruption,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“This iconic ballet has everything that makes classical story ballets so appealing to patrons of all ages – with technically challenging choreography, beautiful staging and music, and many exciting scenes and characters.
"Coinciding with Mother’s Day weekend, this ballet can be a wonderful gift and an excellent opportunity for families to spend time immersed in the world of the performing arts.”

The story of The Sleeping Beauty is a familiar fairytale, showcasing the timeless conflict between the forces of good and evil and the enduring power of love.

Taking audiences into a magical land, OBT’s production introduces the lovely Princess Aurora, the wicked fairy who cursed her, the kind fairy who protected her, and the brave prince who set her free of the spell. True to the original roots of this classical ballet, The Sleeping Beauty features choreography by Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev after Marius Petipa.

MoneyTalk for Couples: What is your credit score?

Stacey Black BECU Lead Financial Educator
When it comes to any relationship, aligning on money matters is important as it plays a pivotal role in every aspect of a couple’s life.

Although talking about finances may not be the most fun conversation to have, there’s no doubt it’s an important one that can have long-term impact.

To make defining your relationship with money easier as a couple, BECU Lead Financial Educator Stacey Black suggests that you continue the conversation with this question:

What is your credit score?

Another important part of your financial future includes awareness of each other’s credit situations.

Do you or your significant other have bad credit? Are they carrying large sums of debt, or have they defaulted on loans?

A poor credit history could drastically hinder your ability to plan ahead and achieve your goals, so conducting this type of “financial background check” ahead of time is crucial.

Credit reports contain information about your credit activity and current credit situation such as loan paying history and the status of your credit accounts, but it also contains other information that is important for you to review together.

This includes:
  • Identifying information: periodically, it’s important to review to make sure your name and address are correct. If not, it could be an indication of fraud.
  • Account history: this is the biggest section on your credit report and has information about each of your credit accounts, including how you’ve paid
  • Public records: this section includes negative financial information like bankruptcies, lawsuit judgements and tax liens
  • Credit inquiries: this section lists everyone who’s accessed your credit report in the past two years
For those without credit, a secured credit card provides the opportunity to start building credit responsibly. A secured card requires you to make a security deposit, which is used as collateral in case of default on the loan and can help people feel more invested to make payments.

Of course, there are pros and cons of cosigning a loan or credit card for your significant other:
  • Pros: helping someone build good credit by cosigning a loan, for example, can change that person’s life for the better and have positive impacts on your relationship
  • Cons:
    • As a cosigner, it’s your good credit that’s backing the loan. If your significant other misses a payment, that late payment history goes on your credit report.
    • When applying for credit cards or loans, credit card issuers and financial institutions look at what’s called your debt-to-income ratio to determine approval and the credit limit or loan amount for which you qualify. If you’re a cosigner on a large loan, that’s going to raise your debt-to-income ratio, causing some creditors to back away because they think you have too much debt.
The Shoreline BECU branch is located at Gateway Plaza at N 185th and Aurora.

Meridian Park students release tiny Coho salmon into Lake Ballinger

Two Meridian Park students with cups of tiny salmon to release into Lake Ballinger

Story and photos by Jim Siscel

On Sunday afternoon, April 30, 2023 Abby Lane invited Meridian Park Elementary School students to Lake Ballinger to release the Coho salmon that she has been responsible for raising at the school.

An orange bucket full of tiny salmon

Ms. Lane received the salmon eggs in early January. The eggs hatched in early February. She has been feeding them until now when they are big enough to survive in Lake Ballinger.

Netting the little salmon to put in plastic cup

Approximately fifty students, with their parents, came to the lake to assist in releasing the salmon.

Abby Lane (center with sunglasses)

It was an exciting activity for all who attended.

Many questions by attendees were answered about what would now happen in the next stage of the salmon life cycle for the little fish.

Releasing the salmon at the lake edge

The students took their cups of salmon and released them right at the edge of the lake.

An older student walked into the lake (with parent’s permission) to release her Coho salmon.

Lake Ballinger is directly north of Shoreline, in Snohomish county. Waters from the lake flow through a series of creeks on their way to Lake Washington.

Jim Siscel is a retired Shoreline teacher (Echo Lake Elementary) who fosters fish programs in multiple Shoreline elementary schools.

Inslee signs laws to protect reproductive health and gender-affirming care

Gov. Jay Inslee signs abortion and gender affirming care policies at a bill signing ceremony on the University of Washington campus in Seattle on April 27

The Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision last year overturned Roe v. Wade and unleashed a multi-pronged attack on reproductive freedom nationwide. But states like Washington are fighting back to protect the right to abortion, gender-affirming care and other health freedoms.

On April 27, 2023 Gov. Jay Inslee signed five bills that will protect access to a common abortion medication; enhance data privacy for people who share their health information with third party apps; protect Washington patients and providers who may face legal threats from other states; protect providers’ licenses; and eliminate out-of-pocket costs to make abortion access more equitable.

“The right of choice is an issue of freedom,” Inslee said. “Health care must remain the providence of individual Washingtonians. These laws will keep the tentacles of oppressive and overreaching states out of Washington.”

Bacterial infection kills seven patients at downtown Virginia Mason

Klebsiella pneumoniae
A bacterial infection at the downtown campus o Virginia Mason Hospital has infected 31 people to date and killed seven of them.

According to Seattle / King county public health:

Klebsiella pneumoniae are common bacteria that can be part of the normal bacteria living in our bodies, including in our intestines.

However, sometimes the bacteria can enter a part of the body where it is not normally found and can cause infections such as urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, and pneumonia.

In healthcare settings, the bacteria can spread through person-to-person contact, often from contaminated hands.

This can happen if you touch someone who has the infection and don’t wash your hands well afterward. Additionally, the bacteria might contaminate environmental surfaces, such as medical equipment like ventilators or catheters. Bacteria can then spread from the equipment to the patient.

One of the reasons Public Health is concerned about the bacteria circulating in this outbreak is because it has a specific enzyme that breaks down common types of antibiotics, making them ineffective.

Seattle / King county public health has issued a Q/A which can be read here.
